About the StartupDescribe your product in 3 words.
Freedom is Essential
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
I know people are going to ask me a lot of questions about why I started this company. Why didn’t I just travel the world, ride my motorcycle, tinker with my robots, hang out at my bakery with friends and family. And to be honest I still do ask myself that sometimes…but not too often. So why did I create Essential? Well, my hardware engineers wanted me to talk about how we are bringing real passion and craftsmanship back into this category. My software engineers wanted me to talk about our vision for making all devices, even those we don't make ourselves, play well together. My partners wanted me to talk about how we are using methods that could change how successful technology companies are built forever. And this is all true. But the real reason is because of what happened during a night out with an old friend of mine. As the night went on we inevitably began talking about what we didn't like about the current state of technology. Less and less choice. More and more unnecessary features cluttering our lives. An increasing sea of products that didn't work with one another… And just when I was about to drop another criticism it hit me: I am partly responsible for all of this. For all the good Android has done to help bring technology to nearly everyone it has also helped create this weird new world where people are forced to fight with the very technology that was supposed to simplify their lives. Was this what we had intended? Was this the best we could do? I left that night reflecting deeply on what was great and what was frustrating with the current state of technology today. After another long talk with my friend we decided that I needed to start a new kind of company using 21st century methods to build products for the way people want to live in the 21st century.
What makes your product special?
This is what we believe: • Devices are your personal property. We won’t force you to have anything on them you don’t want to have. • We will always play well with others. Closed ecosystems are divisive and outdated. • Premium materials and true craftsmanship shouldn’t be just for the few. • Devices shouldn’t become outdated every year. They should evolve with you. • Technology should assist you so that you can get on with enjoying your life. • Simple is always better.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
I have used the above principles to inform everything Essential is doing and they have helped me attract some of the best and brightest people from all over the world to join me in bringing this vision to life. We won’t achieve everything we hope on day one, but if you’re one of those people who also thinks it’s time for something new, please have a look at www.essential.com to learn more.

My choice for a new phone was between the Pixel 2, the Essential, and the OP5T. I chose the Essential, since the Pixel 2 was too expensive for me (even more so in Germany), and OnePlus couldn't win me with their sometimes shady stuff going on and I also didn't like the design as much.
Thus I imported the Essential PH-1 to Germany, and I so far I've been very happy with it.
I flashed the Oreo beta onto it, and the performance is generally pretty good, I couldn't reproduce most of the common issues with this phone.
I had a lot of random reboots on beta 1 (and also some on beta 2), but those were caused by me rooting the device. A recent Magisk (root) update fixed all issues for me. I only experienced the touch lag/freeze up twice so far on beta 1 (UPDATE: on the final Oreo 8.1, only happens occasionally, and only while charging, so no big of a deal), but each time, just turning off the screen and turning it back on again fixed the problem. I'm going to talk about the rest of the phone in a small list:
PROS:
- Build quality and design: The titanium frame and the glossy ceramic back looks absolutely stunning. The phone also has a relatively high heft to it, which you either like or don't, I think it makes the phone feel really premium.
- The screen: Yes, it's only a LCD, but it's great with perfect sharpness, great colors and good viewing angles. I think I actually prefer it over the AMOLED of my previous 6P. The form factor of the screen with the camera cutout it unique and looks nice in my opinion, and the cutout itself bothers a lot less than you might imagine.
- Software: It's a completely stock Android, the dream of every pure Android software enthusiast.
- Updates and support: Essential proved recently that they stand behind their product. Even though it had a rough start and a lot of software issues at the beginning, they showed their dedication through continuous software and camera updates, bi-weekly AMAs on Reddit, and a general openness to the community.
NEUTRAL:
- No headphone jack: not an issue for me, but might be for some?
CONS:
- Camera. Yep, I had to say it. No, it's not as bad as some reviews make it seem, as it got a lot of updates, but sadly it's not that great either, even if you use the Google Camera port from e.g. B-S-G. The colors just don't feel right, the HDR on my previous 6P was a lot more stunning, and especially in dark lighting there's a lot of noise. Doesn't mean that you can't get really good pictures though from time to time. Definitely note I'm coming from the Nexus 6P, which had an outstanding camera, so my perception might be flawed.
UPDATE: with Gcam on the final Oreo build, it often produces very good photos, provided the lighting is decent enough.
I hope my rather lengthy review could help you in your decision.. so, all in all, even with the small issues I had, I can wholeheartedly give the PH-1 5 stars.
Another PSA on replacement parts availability:
Currently, Essential doesn't sell any replacement parts for it's phone, so GET A CASE! The phone is rather slippery on the back, and tends to slide off flat, slightly angled surfaces (like a tiling ledge in the bath room..).
I heard though that Essential is pretty nice on replacing the whole phone if you pay a small sum.
UPDATE, 16.07.2018:
Another update, after half a year of ownership. I meanwhile flashed the Android P Beta onto my PH-1, which Essential surprisingly released for this phone, joining a very small set of other manufacturers to give a preview of the next Android version alongside Google this year.
For a preview, it has been pretty stable for me (apart from a few sudden reboots), and I'm extremely happy with the update support Essential is giving. Coming from a Nexus with the known-excellent Google support, I highly appreciate this.
It seems that the battery life actually increased in this preview as well, it seems that Android's new "Adaptive battery" works wonders (I got over 8 hours of SOT a few days ago, with only 20 percent recharging in between, playing Ingress afterwards, which is a heavy battery drainer normally).
Also, the general smoothness of the device got noticably better, the animations on P are really nice (even though I still hate the new Android design, lol). If you get this phone, you might want to take a look at the preview program.
1. This phone is amazing in many ways
2. Most reviews from pre-November were based on at least 3 software updates behind the current version and much has improved.
3. When you get this phone and it asks you to install one update, you are not done: you must go to to settings->about phone->system update and check for another one. You must repeat this process until it tells you that "Your system is up to date". If you don't do this then you are likely still on old, buggier versions of the software. I'm guessing that some of the recent reviewers here have not done this.
My moto x pure had been a great phone, but I needed to replace it for two reasons: the battery was never great and getting worse as it aged, and I was getting tired of carrying this giant thing in my pocket. If not for those things I would have hung on to it. What I wanted in a new phone: everything that was great about the moto x pure: runs Android; great looking, large, and very bright screen; great audio from the front facing stereo speakers; great camera; no bloatware; a quick way to launch the camera which was the same whether locked or unlocked; fast and smooth; durable and scratch-resistant; a headphone jack. To that list I added some things that the moto was not good at or never had: long battery life, being small enough to use one-handed and not be bursting out of my pocket, and a fast, accurate fingerprint reader.
I looked at and rejected lots of phones, none of them had everything I wanted. Does the essential phone have everything I wanted? No way, but it's better than the rest for me for the following reasons.
Pros
------
* Screen: A large, beautiful, responsive screen in the smallest size. When you pull this phone out of your pocket, hold it in your hand, reach across the screen with one hand, and look at the great screen, you'll probably get what I'm saying.
* Speed: Very fast and smooth operation. No stuttering or other slowdowns. Runs the fastest Android processor currently available, same as on the S8 and others costing much more.
* Camera launch: Can launch the camera quickly and easily, the same way, regardless of whether it's locked, screen off, or I'm using it.
* Speaker: Very loud and clear
*Battery: amazing battery life, looks like it will allow for 2-3x the screen on time of the moto x which ranged from 2 to 3 hours.
* Bloatware: Android on the Essential is even more pure than that of my moto x pure edition
* Fingerprint sensor: this one is very fast and accurate, it's great to have one finally. The one small problem is that it's not recessed very far into the body, so it can be slightly tricky to find sometimes. But it's so fast and accurate that usually getting in the vicinity of the center works for me.
* Ambient light sensor: works perfectly, always at a good level for me no matter where I am.
* GPS: perfect
* Updates: Supported by a small, hungry startup which cares so much about the success of their product that they will push out multiple updates in a month. The larger companies and the carriers don't seem to care that much. Oreo should be coming soon, and unlike with other companies, I believe it.
* Security: 3 years promised monthly security updates (My moto x pure went for almost a year without a security update, and I don't think that's unusual).
* Storage: Huge amount of storage, 128GB
* Price: And, perhaps best of all, the price. I was lucky enough to get this phone at what was probably the lowest price it will ever see, less than half the price of a similarly equipped pixel 2 XL or Galaxy S8 plus. The price has already gone up a bit, I recommend that you get it before it goes higher.
OK
-----
* Speaker: I was hoping to get front facing speakers like I had in the moto, but those days are over, I think, and it's well worth losing that for the small size. Despite the lack of front facing speakers, the single downward facing speaker on this phone is louder than the moto and seems just as clear. But you can cover it somewhat easily with your hand, as in any other phone with this type of speaker.
* Camera: You've probably heard many complaints about the camera. Some of them have likely been addressed by recent updates, but there are still some issues. I haven't tested it extensively yet, but so far it seems to be not quite as good as the moto x pure. The pure camera has been fantastic for me, so a small downgrade is not a big deal for me. And I'm hoping it will get better with updates. I have not yet tried the ripped Google camera apk that others have had success with.
* USB-C: had to happen sooner or later, but I'm not happy about having to buy more cables and chargers, and not being able to use the same on the other devices in my house
Cons
-------
* Headphone jack: I'm just gonna have to get used to not having one. Not ideal, but it was getting to be a pain to plug in every time I got in the car; I bought a bluetooth car receiver along with the phone.
* Water resistance: I was looking forward to having a phone that I could use without fear in the water, but this phone is not it.
* Flashlight: I really liked the chop gesture to turn on the moto flashlight. I used that all the time when I needed quick light and didn't want to have to unlock my phone, pull down the notifications, and tap on the flashlight. Every phone should have something like this.
