Pipeline Fighters fuses testimonials of lamentation, defiance and resolve in a scathing examination of fossil fuel infrastructure projects, hydraulic fracturing, climate change, impacting our water, our safety and our way of life.
An important film that follows one of the most critical fights of our times. Are you aware that a gas pipeline company can draw a line on a map and take your land for their own profits? You have no choice in the matter as the corrupt government agency FERC will certainly give it their rubber stamp of approval. The only way to stop this insanity is to fight it in the courts and fight it in the streets. Take time to watch this remarkable film and join this fight for our land, water, air for our children and our planet!
This is a beautifully filmed and gripping documentary about ordinary people becoming politicized and mobilizing to fight the threat to their communities posed by an interstate gas pipeline - something that has been happening with increased frequency for over a decade as fracking spreads across the United States. Pipeline Fighters focuses on opposition to the Mountain Valley Pipeline, proposed to run 300 miles through West Virginia and southwest Virginia. The film views the larger political struggle between large corporations and small communities through the personal stories and the voices of ordinary people who initially mobilized to protect their own properties or those of their neighbors but many of whom over the course of months and years of struggle become dedicated, knowledge environmentalist waging war on fracking, climate polluters and global warming. The documentary captures grass root democracy in its most innocent inception and the prospects of true democracy in an age of plutocracy and political corruption - thanks to Citizens United.
To understand just how threatening these new, large natural gas transmission lines are - unlike anything ever built in mountainous terrain, see this video! They would allow private companies to use the federal power of eminent domain against thousands of landowners for projects that will benefit users overseas and far from the most-affected properties. Their evacuation zone (serious threat of injury) is over 7,000 feet on each side, yet they propose to build within 10 feet of some homes. This is not a partisan issue at the local level, with Republican county boards of supervisors strongly opposed for over two years - and you can see why
A well made and moving documentary. Should be shown in schools and universities to reveal what is really going on in America. i.e its profit over over people. However, it's only with the full participation of the people that things can change. Save our future, get involved. ACT NOW
It's so very important that people around the United States understand that if this predation of our natural environment, our homes, and our health can happen here in Appalachia, it really can happen anywhere. All that my neighbors and I will suffer -- thousands of homesteads and farms destroyed, hundreds of thousands affected by potential water pollution -- is unimportant to our government officials, as long as a corporation makes a guaranteed 15% profit (yes, that's what the deal is with the FERC). The Mountain Valley Pipeline goes hundreds of miles out of the shortest route from its origin point to its terminus to avoid wealthy areas where the resistance would be stronger, but it still goes over extreme terrain that professional geologists (except the ones paid by the promoters, of course) say is too dangerous. We don't need fictional horror shows -- we are living one right now.
It's not that I "love" it as the subject matter is appalling, unnerving, and infuriating, but because it is highly and intensely informative, laying to rest the obnoxious falsehoods that hydraulic fracturing and pipelines are good for our economy and totally safe. Anyone who is threatened by a pipeline through their land or in their vicinity needs to heed this to learn how to fight. Anyone who is deluded by the promises of the corrupt corporations pushing through their devastating agenda needs to watch this to learn the truth.
What if a private corporation was trying to force you to sell an easement on your land by claiming their for-profit project was "for the public good" ---and using eminent domain to essentially steal your property? Well, it could be you next. A "gold rush" of pipeline building is going on right now. Gas companies are in a mad race to build pipelines everywhere--maybe in your backyard. They are competing with each other and overbuilding and duplicating pipeline infrastructures---proliferating like a cancer. Don't think it could happen to you? That's what folks in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia and West Virginia thought, too...Until Mountain Valley Pipeline threw darts at the map and decided to run an enormous 42" pipeline through the heart of the region, destroying water resources and the Appalachian way of life. But, like the Native people at Standing Rock, the mountain people are fighters. This is their David and Goliath story. Real folks telling it like it is. You will be moved, educated, grateful and glad you saw this award winning movie!
