So I played the entire main story of the game so we'll go ahead and break down why it's so god awful. First off, the open world is filled with NOTHING. If you like traveling around to look at different textures of grass then here you go. Thank god there are various mounts you can get on. There's various biomes but they don't differ too much. You may occasionally find some money to pick up or a small village made up of like 4 people. Oh yeah, I guess I forgot to mention you'll come across random broken down houses and building far and few between. There will be loot there but half the dang time there's enemies that are just plain annoying to fight. There are these other biome areas like radioactive or a hot zone but if you even step a toe into it you're dead. Like, it's so freaking pointless to have these areas that you can't go in! You have to build up your resistance to them which takes a ton of points to do. Unless you feel like grinding just so you can have 100% resistance, forget it.
Next the combat. Holy crap. Nothing has any weight to it and barely anything has sound effects when you hit them. You float around like a feather. Where's the power when hitting stuff? Nowhere apparently. The random enemies in the world, as I said earlier, are difficult and annoying to fight. Wanna get some loot? Too bad. You'll probably die like 5 times. The enemy types are so samey and there's not too much variety. Stupid. The boss fights are even worse. They are the most generic, horrible boss fights I've ever seen in a game. You literally sit there and shoot them a million times over. Their attacks are hard to avoid and you'll have to find convoluted ways to beat them. For instance, I was fighting the boss where you have to be on your water bike thing and I couldn't defeat it when it got to land. I literally couldn't dodge the attacks. I came up with the brilliant plan to sit right next to the monster to hit and shoot it. Are you serious? Maybe I'm just bad at video games but by my standards, the boss fights suck!
Upgrades, people, upgrades. They suck, too! What a surprise. The crafting system is so difficult to understand. You'll collect random parts and then you can upgrade your weapon or build a new one. It's confusing, you need scrap to build them. Stupid! Might as well mention here that the UI is terrible and looks like it came out of Fortnite. The upgrading systems in general to your character are dumb and barely help in combat because you'll still get your butt kicked unless you have good armor.
Can. the. narrator. shut. up. PLEASE. I swear to god, the narrator is one of the worst ideas to come out of this game! Narrators in shows: yeah that's fine! Narrators in a game that won't shut up: BAD. The narrator basically translates everything to you when the characters are talking. Why couldn't you have just had subtitles? Zelda and a million other games do it and it works great! Not to mention that this freaking narrator will talk to you about everything you do. You climb a bridge? Yep he's making a stupid joke about it. You walk? Oh, you know he's talking. You take a crap? He's gotta tell you what it smells like. Just shut up! You don't need to talk constantly. So you wanna know what they did? There is a literal option in the settings to turn down the narrator. TO TURN HIM DOWN. I think you need to rethink your game's narration if you need to put something in the settings to shut your narrator up. He really wasn't necessary.
The dialogue is just something to suffer through. I was constantly skipping because the ALL the characters say the same thing. And I'm not joking. You talk to an NPC? They'll tell you they remember you when you were a kidling and that you still have that spark. You talk to a main character? They'll tell you they remember you when you were a kidling and that you still have that spark. You talk to the sky? They'll tell you they remember you when you were a kidling and that you still have that spark. Seriously, they drag the dialogue on and on until your ears bleed. It's nonsense. You can listen to a few characters at the start and then you can skip the rest of the dialogue the whole game and you can still get the full story.
Let's talk about the art. What I will give the artists and developers of this game, is that the art looks awesome. Most of the designs of the characters are pretty fun and unique. The clothing designs are pretty fun as well. The overall world and design it's breathtaking. It looks luscious and bright. The mix of the old world and new nature is an awesome contrast. Overall I commend the artists who worked on this game, it does look great!
Now to the story. OH GOD, it's a MESS. Basically your mission is to pick a tribe (dark or light) and then defeat the world eaters (big oaf monsters) in order to either destroy the world or bring peace to it. Now at the beginning, you get to pick whether you wanna be light or dark. I picked dark because 10 minutes into this game I knew it was gonna be a trip and a half. After you pick your tribe, you have to go defeat 4 different world eaters. So you have to find different mounts to ride to defeat them. In order to get these mounts you have to go and talk to people. First you'll talk to your old friend Out-of-Date, then travel to someone, they'll tell you about a mount they have and then bam! It's just fetch quests. The entire main story is fetch quests for the most part. You'll get running back and forth constantly to just get parts for your mount. And it's not just like one. It's like 5 to like 8 times you need to get things. It's boring and tedious. Nothing exciting about that at all. After you get your mount then you defeat the world eaters. Make sure to conquer the opposite tribes. Defeat the final boss. In my case, I destroyed the world. Bam you're done. It's stupid. Nothing of meaning at all. You'll have a couple flashbacks but it's so stereotypical you'll about die going through it. It's a meaningless story that will bore you to tears.
All in all, I probably didn't cover everything but I can genuinely say that if you're thinking about getting this game, DON'T! Save your 50 or 60 dollars to spend on a really nice seafood dinner. Maybe buy something nice for your wife. I dunno. Spend it on a million other games that are a thousand times better. Anything but this! I commend the people who worked on this game because I can sense the passion they have but holy smokes, they flopped hard. It's a bad game that will waste your time when you could be doing anything else with your time. You only live once, don't spend it playing games like this.
Oh and if you got to the end of my rant here's a bear! ʕ·ᴥ· ʔ
All that being said. The cartooney aspect of the game gives it some semblance of a sunset overdrive vibe which is cool cuz the characters don’t really have much depth so visuals are kinda important. A cool thing is the customizing of weapons as you can select each piece of the weapon to create guns and melee stuffs per your liking. The map is kinda cool in some areas you get to explore empty towns long overgrown with plant life or like ruins and stuff. And they give you a land mount which is fine but weird cuz ur also an animal so like that’s specist or whatever dog
Having a lot of fun with this game, enjoying the large open world setting and completing the loads of sidequests that can be discovered, at some point I'll tackle more of the main quest but just don't want it to come to an end too quickly.
The fighting and weapon creation systems are a lot of fun, there's a huge range from ridiculous to scarily deadly that can be made with the scraps you manage to find or buy. And the fighting is loads of fun with the comic book effects activated - slow-mo dodges and whether from a distance or up close and personal you'll be taking down large and/or numerous opponents. You'll think you found a favorite weapon and then next something will outdo that.
I think the character creation could be a little more refined, there are certain aspects that couldn't quite appear unless you take on some other aspects you're not in love with (I preferred my character having a muzzle rather than being flatfaced but was having trouble making the body shape and a decent tail size to go along with that) Wish you could focus on maybe the face/body/tail or lower half separately during creation. Some of the aspects in the world get a little repetitive - such as the same grouping of cars scattered around the world.
But that aside, small gripes for the game we got. Very happy with my purchase.
