SETUP TIPS:
* I’ve seen that some others have had difficultly with the headset, and I believe they may have assumed that it came DOA. I initially thought mine was DOA, but one must go through the entire setup before the headset will show any visual at all.
* If you have a graphics card that does not have 2 HDMI ports, you will need to plug your display port into your monitor, and the headset into the HDMI port. Both will need to be plugged in simultaneously in order to complete the setup and turn the headset on.
* A well lit room offers far better tracking.
* Install Steam VR right away.
* Run the full room setup whenever you start using the set. I do this to make sure I’ve expanded the tracking zone to the entire room. (To run this setup, take the set off, and click on the setup icon on the left hand side of the Mixed Reality window).
Compared to the PSVR:
*Much better resolution. Going from the PSVR, it makes you feel like a person who puts on glasses for the first time and realizes that the world actually isn’t that blurry.
*Tracking.
*Capable of much higher frame rates (given your PC is sufficient).
*Though others have complained about the mixed reality default controllers, they’re incalculably better than the ridiculous Move controllers, and their confounding lack of analog sticks. The real downside to the Mixed Reality controller design is the sliding selection pad. A simple D-pad would have been far less frustrating in games and apps that require it.
*The PSVR was more comfortable to wear. I’m going to add some DIY padding to the Acer set and see how that goes.
*This set is quite a bit lighter than the PSVR, and the cable running to it is thick. I suggest a retracting cable management system and cable extensions to keep the cable out of your way.
*The PSVR also had better headphone placement. This is also an easy fix if you take the time to customize the setup to your liking.
Here’s the experience I had with a few games and apps:
FALLOUT 4 VR:
The first thing I did was push the headset to see what it could do. That meant Fallout 4 VR—which is probably the most system taxing VR game at the moment due to both the resolution required, and Bethesda’s poorly aging Creation engine. With the settings tweaked (running on a 1080ti and I7-8700K) I was able to get the game running silky smooth (if you’re having trouble, research how to adjust your fallout4custom.ini and fallout4prefs.ini settings). The headset resolution was excellent. The control pad suffers specifically when quick changing weapons—and by suffers, I mean it’s damn near impossible. I ended up mostly changing weapons through the menu system. Again, a separated D-Pad would be an easy solution that would open up more programming possibilities due to having 4 more buttons. This novelty should be eliminated. But the game was fun and looks great.
SKYRIM VR:
Vastly superior to the PSVR version—partially because of the smooth visuals, partially because of full room tracking (buy cord extensions, and a cord management system if you have a decent space to work with. The dual usb/hdmi cord for Oculus from Amazon didn’t work for me—I believe it could be due to the resolution of the images). Also, the ability to super-sample and add pc mods is huge for this game.
RACE THE SUN:
This game isn’t demanding on the headset or the system, but it is a lot of fun, and I thought I should mention it because in a game with a bright background—this is when you see the visuals of this headset falter. There is a circular lens glare that’s distracting, and the screen door effect is far more noticeable here. So I don’t think brightly lit backgrounds are this headset’s strong suit at all.
DOOM VR:
I thought this game was pretty lame on the PSVR, but with improved visuals, frame rates and controllers that allow for an immersive experience, it was quite a bit more fun and intense.
STEAM VR:
Steam is offering some decent support at the moment. Mixed reality itself will run through steam, there are quite a few games that have mixed reality headset compatibility, and Big Screen Beta is now a favorite of mine to watch movies or interact with the desktop in custom environments.
Conclusion:
If you’re on the fence, you should buy this. It’s an excellent price point for a high resolution set with good internal tracking. Given the review, it may sound like I dislike the PSVR but I actually really enjoyed it and appreciated what Sony could do with an under-powered system. It’s just that a solid PC, a headset with tracking, and controllers with analog sticks takes it to another level.
A few of the other Mixed Reality sets I’ve looked at also look quite good, and I’m really interested to see the next generation of these sets. It doesn’t appear that the incumbent quality champion HTC has any clue of how to address the new competition, while Oculus seems to be taking things more seriously with innovations, price point drops, and the interesting standalone Go.
What I’m hoping for out of the next generation of this headset:
* A front facing camera so that while detached I can see my apartment being broken into in real time.
* Expanded FOV.
* The elimination of lens glare.
* More thoughtful controllers (I’m really hoping Microsoft isn’t forcing their proprietary junk on these companies making Mixed Reality sets).
* Longer cord.
* Better headphone ergonomics.
I have many friends/peers with alternate devices, but I was unwilling to pay top dollar to have my own personal VR experience. I was able to get this particular product on a nice sale, and I am very pleased. I recommend this device if you are considering VR on a budget. Some quick pros and cons:
PROS:
The resolution is great, the headset is comfortable enough to wear for a couple of hours, compatible with most VR games on Steam.
CONS:
controllers with batteries require you to keep some batteries on hand or get some rechargeable batteries. If you hands drop to your side then the controllers lose connection with the headset due to tracking being in the headset (the tracking in the headset is a pro in some situations).
SIDE NOTE: CON WITH STEAM VR, I had to reinstall steam VR due to it crashing. Reinstalling steam VR app fixed a random crashing issue that started a couple months into me using the device.
Overall, if you are a technical person this is a good headset at it's price point. If you are a non-technical person then you may want to avoid this device and go with one of the more expensive brands/modesl. This device has performed better than expected, and I have had a very stable experience. I am an incredibly technical person, so I cannot answer any questions on how "easy" this device is to setup or configure (it is incredibly simple and straight forward), but I want to express that some of the negative reviews I have read on this device completely miss the mark (some not all). Be prepared to have to read up on this device and how to fine tune the device and KNOW YOUR IPD!!!
That all being said, I don't have a reference point in terms of other headsets since this is my first one, and in terms of price I would say that this is a pretty good value if you want entry level VR. I've been playing on a cheap RX560 and having fun. If you aren't using top-tier hardware, it's hard to determine whether the shortcomings of your VR experience are due to your headset, or an inadequate video card / other hardware.
I think it's not necessarily the hardware's fault, but relevant to mention that Windows Mixed reality has been pretty buggy and unreliable at times, requiring fiddling with settings, resetting my machine, resetting my boundaries, etc., to get things running properly, but once things are working, it's a ton of fun. This will vary with your hardware and such but the whole experience seems to be "in beta".
TL;DR: This thing is a ton of fun when everything is working, you may have to fiddle with lots of problems unrelated to the headset, but the foam padding quality does seem to suck.
Top reviews from other countries
Works well with Steam VR. Everything seems to work. Google Earth VR, SuperHot VR, and Form.
Inside-out tracking is impressive. Easiest room-scale VR to set up and doesn't require a large space.
I actually like working in the VR cliff house! It's a good interface as an OS layer. Install the 360 viewer for Edge. It grants access to WebVR apps and 360 videos on YouTube directly from the Edge MR browser. I just wish Microsoft would release more MR apps and expand the cliff house options further.
I wish the controllers used rechargable batteries. I have rechargable AAs and they work well but lithium ion rechargable controllers would be better.
Lenses seem great. LCD screens not as sharp as OLEDs on Vive but the higher resolution helps make up the difference. With the right PC specs, you get 90fps, which is great. No nausea for me, but that can be an individual thing.
Overall, I'm quite pleased. I've used Google Cardboard, Oculus, and Vive. This headset is in line with Vive and Oculus, but it's easier to access other content like SketchFab, YouTube 360s, and other content I would access in Google Cardboard.
So I bought this back in 2018, and even then at that time it was considered the worst of the mixed reality headsets, which in general were mostly considered maybe mid tier pc VR at the time, so you can imagine it's not top of the line nowadays. with its current asking price being far too high(more pricey than the quest 2 on amazon at this time) I cannot recommend anyone buy it. I believe that if you can find this for a cheap price(~200 CAD) it would possibly be worth a purchase as a "dip your toes" for VR. Do keep in mind that my headset pretty much became unusable within a year and I couldn't use it, so I can't say that this headset will last you a long time. Additionally, the specs are nothing to be very impressed about especially if you are comparing it to the Quest 2, and it's not all that comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. honestly, if you have your mind set on a mixed reality headset, just don't get this one unless it's a lot cheaper than anything else.
If you don't know what to buy now, I will give you my recommendation. Unless you have a lot of money to burn(in which case I would probably recommend a valve index to you), and you don't mind some of the concerns with Facebook data collection, Quest 2 100% of the way. around $400 CAD and is standalone(doesn't need a pc like this acer product but can be used as one if you wish), has a great resolution, and supports up to 120Hz(more Hz means things will look smoother and can help reduce motion sickness).
I wish anyone looking to get their first VR headset good luck, because damn VR is a fun hobby and I highly doubt you will regret it.
