Like the new Dolly, Bette Midler, I was a college-age young adult in 1964. The original cast LP was frequent listening for me, and I transferred the well-worn LP to CD-R subsequently. I bought the CD of the 1994 revival to have a version in modern sound. Unfortunately Carol Channing’s voice was shot by then, which ruined an otherwise very nice recording. Happily Better Midler’s voice is still very pleasant listening, much more lyrical than any tones that Ms. Channing could produce but with some brassiness that reasonably approximates the low rumbling timbre that no one ever delivered any better than Ms. Channing.
No effort was spared in this revival and recording. There is a 26-person orchestra, and the cast has a chorus and extras group of 27 with the 9 characters of the show. All of the other characters are sung well with a special nod to David Hyde Pierce for a very fine Horace Vandergelder. I will admit that I probably liked the 1994 supporting group better, but overall I am sure that this is the CD that I will pull from the library when I need another chance to hear this show.

Why the negative reviews? This recording is a joy from start to finish. The orchestrations are brand new, with 27 musicians playing a wide range of instruments, including banjo and harp, and the play the score with great vitality and love. This is an ensemble cast, and everyone works together, with the whole greatly exceeding the sum of its parts. And Bette brings her best to the part, breathing fresh life into Dolly. She does not have a corny bone in her body, and does not try to upstage her fellow players. Every character is well realized, especially Gavin Creel as Cornelius and the lady singing Irene. And the chorus is smooth and deep.

What I recommend you do is play it in the car on the way to work, crank it up full blast, and you will deal with traffic a whole lot better. If it doesn't put a big smile on your face, you may have anger management issues. This is a work of pure joy, and I can not recommend it more highly. It gives us a welcome respite from the age of Trump.

This may be the last of the great 'book' musicals. The piece is solidly structured. a

I was unfamiliar with "Hello Dolly!" until I was cast in a play version of it last fall. I purchased this CD to learn the musical numbers in the time between auditions and practices started, and I found that it prepared me very well, both with the lyrics and the musical score. The recording keeps the classic sound of the older Broadway recordings, but refreshes them subtly with key changes and updated orchestrations. This is by FAR the best vocal cast of "Hello Dolly!" with great performances especially by Kate Baldwin and Gavin Creel. The only downside-and it is a fairly large one-is Bette Midler. Her vocal rendition of Dolly is coarse and harsh, and her range is insanely low, giving her a very unattractive, masculine sound. Barbra Streisand is a much better Dolly Levi, possessing a much more pleasing voice. Also, in this recording, as in the original, there are some mildly suggestive lyrics ( "So Long Dearie;" "Hello Dolly!"), and a profanity ("Motherhood") However, all in all, this is a good, fresh look at a classic musical.

After all the publicity for the revival of Hello Dolly with Bette Midler I decided to order this version. I have all the other versions of this great classic Musical. From what I have heard listening to the new version of Hello Dolly will transport you right into the theater. For me it did not do that. I have listened to it several times and still can not believe that this version was released to the public. It sounds like a Demo recording, recorded in one take. I was hoping for a much better sounding CD. I have heard from so many people that this recording and seeing the musical live on stage is like seeing and hearing two different versions. Which a cast recording should not be. From the sounds of this recording it was recorded when the show was still in previews or even before. I have a feeling that it was recorded in a hurry just to get it released and it out to the public. The orchestra, chorus and even Bette sound very distant in this recording. Like they were all recorded well before they had a chance to really get into each of their roles. The booklet with the CD does not have any pictures of the entire cast just one of Bette. Again I think that is due to the fact that it was a very rushed recording. No where in the booklet is the date listed as to when the recording was done. Another mistake was that they did not include and record the finale which really ends the musical on a very high note. For the finale they just recorded a bit of Bette and David singing and then the recording ended. This revival deserved a much better cast recording than what was released. I think more people would agree with me that it would have been well worth a few months of waiting ( as most cast recordings take ) to have a great recording released of this revival of Hello Dolly. Also I have not seen anywhere of any pictures, recordings of the cast recording the CD. Usually there are pictures of the cast in the recording studio to help promote the release of the CD. I'm glad to have it in my collection but I will say that I will not be listening to this version often. Carol Channing's both original cast and revival and Pearl Bailey's versions are far superior. If you have not heard them do yourself a favor and order those versions over this new version.

I doubt they will ever bring Bette to London to play Dolly but that's life. The cast recording joins my other cast recordings of this memorable Jerry Herman hit and I love it.
