Editorial Reviews
180-Gram Vinyl, deluxe gatefold package with 20 page full color book featuring production photos, lyrics and liner notes
Masterworks Broadway is proud to announce the release of the New Broadway Cast Recording of the most breathlessly anticipated theatrical event of the season, Hello, Dolly! starring the legendary Bette Midler. This Broadway revival of Michael Stewart (book) and Jerry Herman's (music and lyrics) masterpiece is directed by four-time Tony Award® winner Jerry Zaks with choreography by Tony Award® winner Warren Carlyle and is the first new production of Hello, Dolly! to appear on Broadway since it opened more than fifty years ago. The revival will pay tribute to the original work of the legendary director/choreographer Gower Champion, which has been hailed both then and now as one of the greatest stagings in musical theater history.
Based on Thornton Wilder's farce The Matchmaker, Hello, Dolly! caused an instant sensation when it premiered on Broadway in 1964 starring Carol Channing in the title role. It went on to win a record-shattering ten Tony Awards® including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. The original Broadway cast recording, which includes the well-known songs "Put On Your Sunday Clothes," "Before the Parade Passes By" and the unforgettable title track, hit the top of the Billboard album chart and, years later, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Along with Ms. Midler, the cast features Tony® and Emmy Award® winner David Hyde Pierce, two-time Tony Award® nominee Gavin Creel (Hair, Thoroughly Modern Millie) and Tony Award® nominees Kate Baldwin (Finian s Rainbow) and Jennifer Simard (Disaster!).
The creative/design team for Hello, Dolly! includes three-time Tony Award® winner Santo Loquasto (scenic and costume design), Tony Award® winner Scott Lehrer (sound design), Andy Einhorn (music direction), Tony Award® winner Larry Hochman (orchestrations) and Tony Award® winner Don Pippin (vocal arrangements).

No effort was spared in this revival and recording. There is a 26-person orchestra, and the cast has a chorus and extras group of 27 with the 9 characters of the show. All of the other characters are sung well with a special nod to David Hyde Pierce for a very fine Horace Vandergelder. I will admit that I probably liked the 1994 supporting group better, but overall I am sure that this is the CD that I will pull from the library when I need another chance to hear this show.
Why the negative reviews? This recording is a joy from start to finish. The orchestrations are brand new, with 27 musicians playing a wide range of instruments, including banjo and harp, and the play the score with great vitality and love. This is an ensemble cast, and everyone works together, with the whole greatly exceeding the sum of its parts. And Bette brings her best to the part, breathing fresh life into Dolly. She does not have a corny bone in her body, and does not try to upstage her fellow players. Every character is well realized, especially Gavin Creel as Cornelius and the lady singing Irene. And the chorus is smooth and deep.
What I recommend you do is play it in the car on the way to work, crank it up full blast, and you will deal with traffic a whole lot better. If it doesn't put a big smile on your face, you may have anger management issues. This is a work of pure joy, and I can not recommend it more highly. It gives us a welcome respite from the age of Trump.
This may be the last of the great 'book' musicals. The piece is solidly structured. a
