"Keto for Cancer brings clarity to this emerging science and makes implementation of this information straightforward and uncomplicated."—David Perlmutter, New York Times bestselling author
"This book addresses every question or concern that cancer patients might have in using a ketogenic metabolic strategy for managing their cancer.”—Thomas Seyfried ,PhD
THE comprehensive guide for patients and practitioners from a foremost authority in the emerging field of metabolic therapies for cancer.
Although evidence supporting the benefits of ketogenic diet therapies continues to mount, there is little to guide those who wish to adopt this diet as a metabolic therapy for cancer. Keto for Cancer fills this need. Nutritionist Miriam Kalamian has written the book to lay out comprehensive guidelines that specifically address the many challenges associated with cancer, and particularly the deep nutritional overhaul involved with the ketogenic diet.
Kalamian, a leading voice in the keto movement, is driven by passion from her own experience in using the ketogenic diet for her young son. Her book addresses the nuts and bolts of adopting the diet, from deciding whether keto is the right choice to developing a personal plan for smoothly navigating the keto lifestyle. It is invaluable for both beginners and seasoned users of the ketogenic diet, as well as for health-care professionals who need a toolkit to implement this targeted metabolic therapy.
The book guides readers to a deeper understanding of the therapeutic potential of the ketogenic diet—which extends well beyond simply starving cancer—emphasizing the powerful impact the diet has on the metabolism of cancer cells.
Nutritional nuances and meal templates and tracking tools are explored in sections such as:
- Fasting Protocols
- Know What’s in the Foods You Eat
- Preparing Keto Meals
- Put Your Plan Into Action
Kalamian also discusses important issues such as self-advocacy empowering readers by offering tips on how to critically examine cancer-care options and then incorporate what resonates into a truly personalized treatment plan.
“Starve a cancer cell? Indeed. Kalamian, a nutritionist and educator whose 13-year-old son died of brain cancer, argues that research efforts focus too much on genetics and drugs and not enough on the environment and diet. Tumor cells seem to feed on glucose, so she argues that it makes sense to try a low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet. With his introduction, biology professor Thomas Seyfried adds credibility to what he calls a ‘playbook' for patients and caregivers who would like to try incorporating 'therapeutic ketosis' into their standard-of-care oncology treatment. In her how-to guide, Kalamian covers meal planning (many fats are friends), fasting (mostly good), calorie restriction (just don’t go overboard), chemo and radiation (the weight loss they often cause might drive some of the early response to treatment), side effects (an increased risk of kidney stones), and long-term benefits of the keto diet (improved blood pressure, more energy). Though she is an unapologetic advocate, Kalamian does advise readers not to force a loved one to embrace this nutritional therapy.”
“Keto for Cancer is an incredible guide for cancer patients and anyone attempting the ketogenic diet for the metabolic management of disease or just overall health benefits. This book addresses at least 95 percent of the questions I get on a daily basis. A must-read resource for anyone interested in ketogenic diets, cancer, exogenous ketones, and personalizing their nutritional ketosis strategy.”―Dominic D’Agostino, PhD, leading scientist on ketogenic metabolic therapies
“In an era when interest in ketogenic diets has erupted and misinformation abounds, Miriam Kalamian has brilliantly cut to the facts for cancer patients and their caregivers. Keto for Cancer is a clear, concise, and invaluable resource that describes both the science and implementation of these metabolic therapies. Underlying it all is the heart of a mom who has experienced the ultimate tragedy and has chosen to give additional meaning to her son, Raffi’s, life.”―Jim Abrahams, The Charlie Foundation for Ketogenic Therapies
“Keto for Cancer reveals how a ketogenic diet powerfully targets cancer at its metabolic core. This approach to cancer therapy, and prevention, offers up a welcomed perspective in a world focused on waging war on cancer with medical weapons of mass destruction. Miriam Kalamian’s exemplary achievement brings clarity to this emerging science and makes implementation of this information straightforward and uncomplicated.”―David Perlmutter, FACN, author of #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain and The Grain Brain Whole Life Plan
“Standard treatments for Miriam Kalamian’s son Raffi’s brain tumor failed and crippled his quality of life, so she went to graduate school to learn all she could about metabolic nutritional therapies. Keto for Cancer is comprehensive and has appropriate cautions about the limits of the approach. It’s a complete how-to book for others in this terrible position and is imprinted with her love for her son.”―Eugene J. Fine, MD, professor of clinical radiology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine
“Cancer is the word nobody ever wants to hear, but Miriam Kalamian understands it’s not an automatic death sentence either. Keto for Cancer offers hope for healing to cancer patients by offering them a personal plan for success that implements the powerful symbiosis of natural strategies such as the ketogenic diet, fasting, and supplementation. It’s time to live the anticancer life!"―Jimmy Moore, health podcaster; international bestselling author of Keto Clarity
“The nutrition and medical world is incredibly blessed that Miriam Kalamian has decided to generously share her in-depth knowledge, but most importantly her vast clinical experience and skills, in this book. I’m confident that it will become the go-to resource for the practical application of the ketogenic approach. Keto for Cancer will undoubtedly pave the way for improved health in many chronically ill patients.”―Patricia Daly, coauthor of The Ketogenic Kitchen
“This iconoclastic guide to the ketogenic diet for cancer epitomizes ‘personalized medicine’ and offers a well-researched yet easy-to-understand approach to the science underpinning the metabolic foundations of cancer. A must-read, not only as stepwise guide for patients but for all physicians, particularly those skeptical of the therapeutic benefits of the ketogenic diet.”―Joseph C. Maroon, MD, clinical professor of neurosurgery, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
“Miriam Kalamian has written an excellent and complete guide to ketogenic therapy in cancer treatment. Both experienced and laypersons can learn a lot from this book, which nicely explains the relationships between calorie restriction, ketogenic diets, and fasting and provides practical information on how to best start an individualized dietary treatment plan. I especially recommend this book to patients and their relatives, but it has also become a valuable reference for my own clinical work with patients.”―Dr. Rainer J. Klement, PhD, Department of Radiation Oncology, Leopoldina Hospital Schweinfurt, Germany
“I have gotten to know Miriam personally and professionally over the years. Her dedication, work ethic, passion, integrity, and unwavering demand for sound, empirical research is unmatched. Keto for Cancer is a remarkable resource for cancer patients; beautifully written, easy to follow, and incredibly well researched―a true gift to the oncology community.”―Travis Christofferson, author of Tripping Over the Truth
“Miriam Kalamian’s Keto for Cancer provides the most comprehensive and organized step-by-step information to easily understand and efficiently implement a lifesaving ketogenic diet. Using rigorous scientific evidence-based rationale, Kalamian explains why a ketogenic diet is crucial for anticancer management. In this extraordinary book, she shares her deep expertise in the science of cancer metabolism with her profoundly compassionate empathy and loving kindness to accomplish a landmark in this field. The book is an academic, scientific primer for clinicians (who will greatly benefit from the lucid, crisp explanations), as well as a detailed, easy-to-follow manual for patients and their families to carry out their daily anticancer ketogenic diets. This diligent, gifted work gives real life and authentic hope to its readers in a unique tour de force which will remain a landmark for generations.”―J. William (Will) LaValley, MD, Molecular Integrative Oncology
“Cancer nutrition expert Miriam Kalamian has poured every ounce of her hard-earned wisdom, deep scientific knowledge, and compassion into Keto for Cancer. Within this masterful guide, she explains how ketogenic diets limit tumor cell access to key nutrients while nourishing healthy cells, quieting inflammation, and improving quality of life. Let Kalamian empower you to take aim at cancer’s soft underbelly and begin reclaiming your health.”―Georgia Ede, MD, Psychiatrist and Nutrition Specialist
“I had the pleasure of first meeting Miriam at a conference in Berkeley a few years back, she was speaking on a panel about the ketogenic diet and cancer. Her story touched me deeply as did her articulate way of expressing how to implement a ketogenic diet. I was actively searching for a good resource for cancer patients as all that was available back then was directed to epilepsy and the fitness world. She was gracious enough to share with me a coveted, paper copy of her ebook, Getting Started With a Ketogenic Diet. I presented it a week later to a group of clients at a cancer retreat in northern California and started a snowball effect of finally finding a community to talk to about the ketogenic diet and cancer. Since then, I have watched Miriam reach superstardom with her brilliant mind and compassionate heart. This book is a culmination of what she has learned, shared, gleaned from others, and inspired in the world of both bench (her collaborations with world renowned researchers) and bedside (real-life application by respected clinicians) medicine. This is the most thorough discussion on ketogenic diet and cancer in the industry and I expect it to continue to inspire change in how we approach cancer today.”―Nasha Winters, ND, coauthor of The Metabolic Approach to Cancer--This text refers to the paperback edition.
About the Author
Miriam Kalamian is a nutrition consultant, educator, and author specializing in the implementation of ketogenic therapies. She earned her master of education (EdM) from Smith College and her master of human nutrition (MS) from Eastern Michigan University. She is board certified in nutrition (CNS) by the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists.
Inspired by the work of Thomas N. Seyfried, PhD, Miriam draws on a decade of experience to provide comprehensive guidelines that specifically address the many diet and lifestyle challenges associated with a cancer diagnosis.
Miriam is a leading voice in the keto movement. Her passion for helping others implement this diet comes directly from her personal experience. Her son Raffi was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December 2004. Standard of care therapies failed to stop the relentless progression of his disease, and it became painfully clear that she needed to switch gears quickly. That is what originally led her to Dr. Thomas Seyfried’s research supporting the use of the ketogenic diet for cancer.
Beyond cancer, Miriam integrates nutritional strategies with metabolic therapies and lifestyle modifications to develop personalized treatments that address a broad spectrum of conditions that are currently considered intractable, including age-related, neurodegenerative, and bariatric diseases.
Miriam lives in Montana.--This text refers to the paperback edition.

In October of 2017, after having rapid tumor growth in the previous two months, I was diagnosed Stage 3 A, Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, HER 2+, ER -/PR-.
Fast-forward to January 2018. I finished 3 rounds of Chemo which annihilated the entire mass. I learned about a “Therapeutic Ketogenic Diet” There appeared to be sound research based on the theory that cancer uses glucose as a primary fuel source and by going into ketosis, one could effectively “starve cancer cells” and “prevent cancer growth” Based on the work of Dr. Thomas Seyfried, Miriam Kalamian (Keto For Cancer) and many other Integrative/Functional physicians on the “Keto bandwagon” I jumped on board. It made sense - theoretically.
On the Therapeutic Ketogenic diet, organic meat and dairy is not only allowed, but encouraged. Who doesn’t love the idea of a diet that says cheese is OK?! I kept my meat and dairy consumption limited because excess protein can also fuel cancer growth through a process called gluconeogenisis. I stayed in deep ketosis for 5 months! My Glucose/Ketone Index ranged from 3.1-.9 which is extremely deep ketosis. There should have been NO fuel for cancer growth.
Two months ago, I felt new lumps...WHAT?! I’ve tracked everything through Cronometer and followed the diet to a T!!! I had an Ultrasound which confirmed two new masses. One at 1.5 cm and another at .8 cm. I felt great - HOW could this be?? The Ketogenic Diet for cancer may have been studied for glioblastoma's, it HAS NOT been studied for breast or ANY OTHER TYPE OF cancer with human trials. This is DANGEROUS TO BE RECOMMENDING THIS DIET INDISCRIMINATELY AS A UNIVERSAL ANTI-CANCER DIET BASED STRICTLY ON THEORY AND RODENT STUDIES!
So I started doing some digging... The Ketogenic Diet for Cancer is a completely unproven diet in cancer patients outside of Glioblastoma - I was willing to give it a try despite this. HOWEVER, A Whole Food, Plant-Based Diet has been used and tracked for DECADES with proven success in reversing cancer - all different kinds of cancer! Dr. Lorraine Day, Chris Wark, and many others have survived aggressive, late-stage cancers by adopting a WFPB Diet! I PERSONALLY experienced success with this prior to being diagnosed with cancer!
So, I did more deep thinking, soul-searching and made the decision to be VEGAN, YES, I SAID VEGAN! FOR LIFE.... Not only is this the diet of the healthiest, disease-free people on the planet - see The Blue Zones... (Most of which are NOT found in this nation by the way.) But, many of you have seen my Mercy For Animals posts. I was raised by my Grandfather based on his biblical teachings to know that God expected us to care for the animals on the planet with compassion and humane treatment. The Food Industry in the United States, through the sick practice called “Factory Farming and CAFO (controlled animal feeding operation) are ONE OF the most ABUSIVE, CRUEL and EVIL industries on the planet and I REFUSE to support it any longer. Yeah - I used to love my burgers, chicken fingers, cheese, ice cream and all that CRAP that ended up feeding cancer in my body.
Folks, WE, are making ourselves sick, making politicians RIDICULOUSLY WEALTHY and supporting UNIMAGINABLE CRUELTY to animals unfortunate to be born into the INDUSTRY that sees them as a profit-making commodity rather than a living, breathing, FEELING creation of God’s that WE HAVE BEEN COMMANDED TO CARE FOR AND PROTECT.
To my Christian friends, think about this... In Genesis 1, what did God give Adam and Eve to eat? PLANTS and SEEDS. Nothing died in the Garden until after the FALL. What did GOD give the Israelites to eat after coming out of Egypt? Manna - a bread- like substance. NOT MEAT!! It wasn’t until AFTER they COMPLAINED about not having meat , did he send the quail and He told them that their GLUTTONY WOULD KILL THEM! AND IT DID!
GUESS WHAT?! OUR GLUTTONY IS STILL KILLING US! CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE, CANCER, DIABETES...THE BIG 3 KILLERS IN AMERICA CAN ALL BE TURNED AROUND BY CHANGING OUR DIET TO A PLANT-BASED DIET! Why are you not hearing about this from your doctor or the media? Because they are controlled by the Pharmaceutical industry and they ONLY MAKE MONEY BY KEEPING YOU SICK AND DEPENDANT ON THEIR DRUGS. LET THAT SINK IN!
GOD KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING. HE GAVE US THE BEST FIRST...MEAT ONLY CAME AFTER DISOBEDIENCE AND COMPLAINING AND WE ARE STILL SUFFERING BECAUSE OF IT - NOT ONLY US, BUT OUR CHILDREN AND THE ANIMALS BORN INTO THIS SICK, CRUEL INDUSTRY.
WE HAVE A SIMPLE CHOICE TO MAKE THAT CAN CHANGE OUR HEALTH, PROTECT THE FUTURE HEALTH OF OUR CHILDREN AND ENSURE THAT COUNTLESS ANIMALS WILL NOT HAVE TO LIVE AND DIE IN INTENSE PAIN AND SUFFERING. WE HAVE PETS THAT WE WOULD BE HORRIFIED TO CONSIDER EATING. WHY IS A CHICKEN, COW, PIG, HORSE - YES, SOME EAT HORSES... OR ANY OTHER CREATURE ANY DIFFERENT?
WE CHANGE OUR LIVES AND THEIRS BY OUR BUYING CHOICES. WE VOTE WITH OUR HARD-EARNED DOLLARS.
I am a VEGAN ATHLETE AND CANCER FIGHTER- FOR LIFE and I invite you to do your research - CHOOSE NOT TO BURY YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND and follow me in TAKING BACK OUR HEALTH AND BEGIN THE PROCESS OF TAKING CARE OF GOD’S CREATION ONCE AGAIN, AS HE INTENDED. KETO IS NOT A UNIVERSAL CANCER PREVENTION DIET. BUYER BEWARE!
Put simply, modern humans are filling their tanks both with too much fuel and with different fuels at the wrong proportions (per evolutionary tuning). Our engines are strained, and this excessive and imbalanced intake can feed cancers. We can try to limit that by 1) restricting calories and 2) restricting carbs and proteins (that fuel cancer). That means a diet based on healthy fats, which can fuel normal cells but do not fuel the explosive growth of cancer tumors. The book goes into great detail about how to pursue this anti-cancer diet.
A few thoughts on what I might like to see in the next edition:
1) A little more discussion on fasting, especially of duration longer than 2-3 days. All "extended fasting" is dismissed with a sentence, but there must be some room to talk about potential benefits (and harms) of fasting for periods longer than 3 days but shorter than, say, 30 days.
Similarly, there is a great appendix of resources that are listed under various headings but there is no heading for "fasting." If the coverage of therapeutic fasting isn't expanded in the actual text of the book, it would at least be helpful to give a comprehensive list of the best current resources on science-based fasting. A comprehensive approach to metabolic healing should thoroughly investigate and discuss potential benefits of NOT eating as well as of ketogenic eating.
2) A little more clarity in the discussion on glutamine in foods. We know it is in animal protein (and obviously in glutamine supplements), but it is an amino acid that is in all kinds of things. If it plays a major role in feeding cancer, don't we want to try to limit it more greatly? I remain confused about the fact that keto staples like nuts and cruciferous vegetables ALSO have lots of glutamine. Do we try to restrict dietary glutamine, or not? If so, how?
It would seem that rather than just a low protein ketogenic diet, what we really want would be a low glutamine ketogenic diet. Am I missing something?
But other than that, 98 out of 100 still equals an A+ for this book!
