The welding installation considerations, follow these steps:
1. The components are welding the front board, from low to high principles, namely the first low welding components, such as, capacitor, resistor, diode, etc.
2.Welding IC socket, terminal blocks, finally power socket, adjustable potentiometer.
3.The back with a diagonal cutting pliers to cut short the pins as far as possible.

Debugging steps:
1After completion of welding on IC, XR2206, pay attention to the direction of IC, insert the might damage the chip!
2. check the IC whether against, such as anti please timely correction.
3. Insert the power supply, power supply for 5.5 * 2.1 port, inside outside is negative polarity. For 9-12 v power supply voltage. The waveform may not be stable for more than 12V.

Using the step
1. J1 jumper cap plug in, SIN/TRI blue terminals output sine wave (note J1, J2 can only insert one of)
2. J2 jumper cap plug in, SIN/TRI blue terminals output triangular wave (note J1, J2 can only insert one of)
3. SQU blue terminals output pulse
4. AMP : Sine wave, triangle wave amplitude adjustment
5. FINE : Frequency fine adjustment
6. Coarse : Frequency of coarse adjustment

Parts are OK, if you get ‘em
Just looked over this kit - the parts, layout, design and such are decent quality (my profession, so I should know); my use is replacing a much older simple generator, in a much bigger box, starting to fail, so I don’t have expectations beyond a grab-quick signal source for tweaking a project on my bench, or maybe setting up a rebuilt guitar amp, usually with a ‘scope, and I’m sure this will do just fine. There is the matter of the missing pot (see the picture), so we’ll be returning this one as soon as the one we just ordered arrives. (We’re assuming there will be a complete set of parts between the two.) I would have spec’ed and ordered parts and put this together on an in-house board, but for the price, it’s not even close to worth the effort.

Easy build. But there were a few problems. The screws that mount the board to the bottom are way too short but mine also had a 20 pin socket for a 16 pin IC. Luckily I had a spare. Only took a couple hours and I was taking my time. It tested fine but I couldn't get the waveform to lock until I gave up on the 9v supply and went with 12v. The frequency ranges aren't exact but they at least overlap so you can generate anything up to 1.25 Mhz (rated only to 1Mhz though). I took 50 pics during the assembly and consider writing an assembly guide but it is actually very simple to build. No its not as nice as my BK but it works for what I needed it for. Important note though, the XR2206 is made to drive a 600 ohm load so it may or may not perform well if you drive a low impedance load.

I would not recommend this to a new kit builder due to the lack of clear instructions.

Note: The kit came with a 8 pin header instead of a 10 for the frequency range selection

I did make some changes to my kit as I was building it:
(There is a video on YouTube describing this where I gleaned some of my changes from)

- Used a higher quality IC socket for the IC.
- Rewired the Amplitude Pot since mine was backwards .
- Put a 50K Resistor across the Amplitude Pot to lower the output, since the waveform was flat topping.
(I may replace this with a lower value to lower the output more since it's about 5v output now)
- Replaced C3 With a 1uf cap as per the data sheet for the IC
- Replaced R3 & R5 with a 1K Resistor each to lower the output
- Replaced R1 with a 5K Resistor to lower the Square wave output (could have gone larger to lower further)
- Installed a 10uf Cap in line with the Sin/Tri output to block the DC
- Installed a 10uf Cap in parallel with R5 to help stabilize the output

Over all it's good for what it is "A inexpensive (AKA Cheap) Function Generator)

With a little work it can be made better but for the price it's a handy little piece of gear.

Great Value, easy to build, not completed yet with all my performance tests to confirm claims advertised. Will update as soon as testing is done. If still pleased, will order more for the student science classroom. thank you, frank
UPDATE: the kit was missing 2 jumper posts, the screws were much too short, the IC had bent pins. Got it working and tested it. All seems to be working now, not very accurate, but it does work. Should place a .01 capicator at the signal output if using a scope to test it.

I installed the components in about an hour and it worked immediately. The waveforms are as advertised, however, the sine and triangle waveforms have a significant DC bias component rather than being centered on ground. With a 12 volt supply voltage, the waveform midpoint is at about 7 volts. That means that you can't put the output directly into headphones or anything similar because the DC bias will prevent normal operation or could even damage earphones. A typical solution is to use back-to-back electrolytic capacitors in the signal output wire to AC couple the signal. I used two 2200 uF electrolytic capacitors that I already had, each rated at greater than the 12 V power supply. It would have worked fine with a high impedance load with much smaller caps. The negative (stripe) sides of the caps are connected together, and the signal and load wires are connected to the the two outside wires. This approximates a large non-polar capacitor. The output is then AC coupled and close to centered on 0 Volts.
There is an error in the schematic provided in the instructions that doesn't matter unless you use it to debug the circuit. The frequency range jumper is shown with 4 pairs of header pins and C7 and C8 are shown wired together. In actuality, there are 5 pairs and the last two pairs are connected separately to C7 and C8. The circuit as shown would only have 4 ranges and one of the pairs would not be connected. The highest range would not be available either.

I bought this kit for educational purposes but there was just so many things wrong when I was working on it.

The manual was missing so I had to look up an online version but ended up seeing the schematic from one of the reviewers (thank you Bradeen). I noticed 2 capacitors and a 1k resistor were missing so I ended up using my own, the pins of the IC chip are bent, the IC chip socket is bigger so it was difficult inserting and soldering it when R6 was already soldered on. I see others' header pins were 10 while mine are 8.

I should have returned it but I was halfway done. At the end of it the function generator was not even working, it could be because of the 8 header pins or I have done something wrong but based on how this product was poorly handled for me - this failure is on the vendor as well. You cannot ship a product with missing, damaged, and incorrect components - that is just wrong.

If you are looking for a kit, buy it somewhere else because this was just a waste of $13.

Although I haven't fully documented the performance of this kit, at least it came with a functioning IC -- as opposed to two kits that came from a different vendor, that both arrived with inoperative IC's. In fact, the chip that came with this version seems to be a genuine chip (as opposed to a clone that seems to come with some versions of this kit), in that it operates well at voltages above 12V and seems to have very little noise. The only reason for the four stars is that the case that comes with the kit doesn't fit; it is too short. Even with the components mounted as close as physically possible to the board, the top of the case rests on the top of some of the components and the screws aren't long enough to fasten the top panel to the back. If you don't need to mount it in the case that comes with it, the fit seems fine. Assembly directions are pretty sketchy but there is lots of help available on line if needed.
