Probably a great guitar, but poor performance by Amazon this time

Probably a great guitar, but poor performance by Amazon this time
The guitar probably deserves five stars for fundamental quality, playability, sound and appearance, but my experience with Amazon 'Yamaha Store' did not impress me. I paid the going price for a mint guitar and received a B-stock item. All the worse since they already knew it was B-stock (see picture) but shipped it to me anyway. I can live with some blemishes and scratches, but the main problem was that the setup was not completed. The nut was all wrong, making it impossible to tune the guitar. I would have kept it if Amazon had agreed to giving me a discount, which they declined.

This is a great guitar that I consider to be a new original classic. It's well built and plays well, but all this "Japanese influence" combined with the Yamaha name somewhat steers you away from realizing that this is a guitar made in Indonesia and not Japan.

I love Indonesian guitars, so that's not a dealbreaker.

On its own, the guitar feels and plays like a premium guitar. The finish is great, the guitar is heavy and resonate plus all the hardware is high quality.

The finish on the metal hardware is a little cheap, but it looks nice. The seams on the hardware are pronounced, which looks like it came from a dollar store up close -- but it doesn't impact the quality. The tuners, for example, feel absolutely amazing.

The neck is great too, although the fretwork is a little sloppy. I've seen worse on guitars that cost twice as much. It's not noticeable while playing.

The weight is al little awkward. I wouldn't exactly call this a "lap guitar" - which is unfortunate.

Yamaha somehow managed to engineer a premium guitar to a price point that is below $700. I think that is amazing. It's not a direct copy of a heritage guitar (Strat, Tele, Les Paul or SG so it's configuration and overall feel may take a moment to get used to.

If all of your favorite rock stars played a Yamaha Revstar, this guitar would be highly sought after and much pricier. Instead, it's a bit of an unknown diamond in the rough. Don't expect to win any popularity contests based on your guitar alone with the Yamaha. I do, however, recommend giving the guitar a chance because it's one heck of a value for its cost. I think people who play in smaller bands will appreciate it, as will recording artists. It has a very controlled and "tight" sound -- I haven't tried it live in a band setting to determine how well it cuts through a mix but this guitar makes cheap and expensive amps both sound amazing.

This is a 5-star guitar and I wouldn't change a thing. All I can say is test this guitar before spending your $650 on a MIM Strat or Epi LP. Try ESP/LTD guitars as well. If you like the Yamaha, buy it.... it's great!

I own and play a lot of nice electric and acoustic guitars. Was debating between this and an SG Deluxe. Decided on this one because I already have a lot of Gibsons and this looked unique and cool. I am utterly blown away at how this Indonesian-made guitar stands up to much more expensive American and Japanese counterparts. For $700, this is a lot of instrument. The materials and craftsmanship are simply unbelievable. Every detail-- from fit/finish down to switches and pots--is top notch. Neck is really comfortable--including nicely finished jumbo frets. If you like Gibson style electric guitars, you will not go wrong with this one.

I bought the black RS502 with the wrap around tail piece and P90 pickups. I was first attracted to it for its aesthetics. I dislike ostentatious guitars with gaudy flame maple tops and things like that. This Revstar - with its flat top, matte finish, and overall stripped down style - really appealed to me, and I wasn't disappointed when I unboxed the guitar. It looks great.

One of my biggest worries about this guitar was that it would be uncomfortable to play sitting down. The shape is kind of similar to the PRS CE24 I used to own, and I always found that awkward to play sitting (which is why I seldom played it and eventually sold it off). I was relieved to find that Revstar does not have that problem - it's actually very well balanced. It's also fairly comfortable to play standing. I've read some reviews claiming that Revstars are similar in weight to Les Pauls, but mine is roughly the same weight as my telecaster. There is a slight neck dive when you play standing up, but it's not too bad.

Setup was OK. The fret ends were really rough and sharp so that was the first thing I had to fix. The action was nice, and I haven't had any issue with binding at the nut, but I needed to adjust the intonation. The pickups were too noisy for me, and I wasn't crazy about them anyway, so I replaced then with Fralin hum-canceling P90s. I had hoped I could deal with the 60-cycle hum, but I don't think I can really make true single coils work in my current apartment.

Overall, it's a decent guitar for the price. If I could go back in time, I'd probably buy a humbucker version.

Yamaha makes an amazing quality guitar that puts Gibson to shame! I own several Les Pauls and SG's and this compares to my SG standard in feel and length. The Revstar502 plays like a dream and I would have no problem paying 2k for one of these if that was their price. For under $700 every part on this guitar is precision such as the tuners which feel firm and remove all doubt of tuning issues. The bridge is solid and top wrap the strings like Billy Gibbons for added sustain. The p90s have beautiful chimey cleans and plenty of grit for the heaviest of guitar tones. This guitar just became my number one.
