I highly recommend fully freezing the chiller units and also chilling the ice cream base for at least 4 hours before using. For the best results, put a cup of the chilled ice cream base in the freezer for 30 minutes to get it as close to freezing as possible. This will result in a slightly more frozen end product.
Remember, ice cream is not supposed to come out of the maker hard, the blades couldn't turn and it's just not cold enough. After completion, you need to mix in your additives then pack it into a container and let it hard freeze in the freezer.
If you follow the instructions, you'll get a consistent and quality product every time.
I would have given it five stars, but for the following:
It could stand to be slightly larger. It is called the "my pint" but you can only put in 1 cup of ice cream base and after fluffing from churning, it might be 1.5 cups, if that. It would be nice if the vessel was 20% larger.
Also, unless you properly chill the ice cream base, there is not enough chilling power in the chillers. Also, even if you start at a refrigerator temperature of 40F, it barely has enough juice. That is why I highly recommend using the freezer to get a head start, but don't let it freeze even a little.
This device is perfect for someone who wants to make a personal sized batch of ice cream, but not become a glutton on a full quart to half-gallon batch. It also gives you the opportunity to make a small batch each night and store them up in plastic containers for later consuming. Cleanup is really easy and getting ready for the next batch is as easy as rinsing it out, drying it off and refreezing.

1/3 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup almond milk (but any milk would work)
1 egg yolk
2 level tbsps of powdered erythritol (any powdered sweetener, or sugar would do)
1. Mix the cream and milk together and bring to a simmer.
2. Mix together the yolk and the powdered sweetener in a separate bowl.
3. Add a tbsp of the boiling cream/milk to the yolk mixture while stirring rapidly, then add another tbsp while stirring, then one more, still stirring.
4. Pour the rest of the cream mixture into the yolk mixture, still mixing quickly.
5. Using a double boiler, bring the mixture up to at least 160ºF while stirring constantly.
6. Remove from heat and add whatever flavouring you like. I either add 1 tsp of vanilla or 1 tbsp quality cocoa powder and stir.
7. Refrigerate for at least three hours before putting it in the ice cream maker (I usually cook up the base in the morning for dessert that night, so it's in the fridge for 8 hours or so).
If you're adding solids like chocolate chips, fruit, or nuts, stir them in manually after you've made the ice cream and you're ready to eat it.
