- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2024Color: Lake BlueSize: 39" Right HandedVerified PurchaseI’ve played guitar for around 15 years and my son (11yr old) has gained an interest in playing. I wanted to find him a decent guitar at an affordable price. I found this guitar and read the reviews on it and thought this might be worth it. I admit I was still skeptical at first because I’ve never played a Donner guitar but when we received the package it was packed very well and nothing was missing. My son opened it up with a smile on his face. I tuned it up for him it was only about of half step out of tune to begin with. I plugged into the amp that came with it and played a little on each pick up selection on both clean and overdrive settings. Honestly, in my opinion, this is a well built guitar. It has a very nice tone good weight to it, the tuners are great. The amp is excellent for a beginner guitarist and sound better than I thought it would. Overall, if you’re looking to buy a beginner guitar I would definitely recommend this bundle to anyone! (adult or child) if I had to pick something to complain about the fretboard was a little dry. Other than that, I will say don’t be afraid to pull the trigger on buying this bundle!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2022Color: SunburstSize: 39" Right HandedVerified PurchaseI'm by no means a professional muscian. I played an acoustic guitar for years and decided I wanted to get an electric guitar, so I looked at multiple items here on Amazon. I'm sure a lot of people are looking at these beginner packages and I can tell you that after getting two of them, I have learned a lot.
First of all, the Donner package is really much better than the Lyx with the exception of the amp. The Gig bag is padded, and has backpack straps. The cable is much better, and has a velcro strap so you can pack it up. The strap is ok and the tuner is like all the others and probably all made in the same place. The guitar is very nice looking and this one has the HSS configuration which is great. The mini amp is cute but not very functional except to use at home. It definitely works and can produce some sound but not a lot and it's the kind that some people strap to their belt and play. The Lyx amp is an actual amp and is surprisingly good.
From reading the other reviews, it appears it is hit or miss whether you get one that has been set up. I did not. My first pick was the Lyx and it had a few issues, which I reviewed on that product so I sent it back and got the Donner. When I opened the packaging I was impressed with the quality of all the parts, and then I tried to tune it. I tried everything, including purchasing a maintenance kit with all the measuring devices and nothing I did could get the low E string to stay in tune. It would tune as an open string and then if I tried to intonate it ( use the 12th fret, which is E an octave higher), it was sharp. I then tried the whole scale on the string and all were sharp.
Ok, so these guitars need to be set up properly and so I went through the process with the help of YouTube and tried to get it to intonate, but had no luck. The B and high E worked fine, but the rest of the strings were not tunable. I even adjusted the pickups to make sure they were not interfering with the tune.
Thinking maybe it was me I went to the local Guitar Center to look at a Squier, and it had the same issues. However, when I took it to the in house luthier, he was able to intonate it (using the same process I had done) in a few minutes.
Having become an instant "expert" through YouTube, I decided it could be one or more of several issues: the strings, the tuning pegs, the nut or the frets. At that point, I decided it wasn't worth the effort. It's a beautiful guitar, with nice features but if it needs to have new strings ($5 to $10) and then if that didn't fix it, I'd need to take it to the luthier for a professional setup ($50) and maybe change the tuning pegs ($60 for Grovers). I'm sure it could be made to work, but at the end of the day and spending an extra $120, I think it would be better to just get a Fender Squier in the first place.
You can get one for $179 on Amazon but it's just the guitar alone. If you want the Gig bag it's another $30 plus $30 for a mini amp, $10 each for tuner and strap and another $10 for capo and picks and $10 for a cable you have a much better package for $120 more than the Donner. Plus, you now have an actual Fender Squier, and I'm thinking the quality control on a Fender even one built in China like these are, has much better quality control.
So, if you just want a package and don't want to bother with the other stuff, the Donner is I believe a higher quality package than Lyx, and you may get lucky and have one already set up. But, if not, you may spend an extra $120 on upgrades and a setup.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2024Color: RedSize: 39" Right HandedVerified PurchasePurchased for my teenager. Not a bad starter guitar for someone who's never owned an instrument but doesn't want to spend an arm and a leg. Everything came as pictured and packaged well. The red is very pretty. - Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2018Color: SunburstSize: 39" Right HandedVerified PurchaseEdited: 2/13/23: I have purchased a few guitars since starting with one late in 2018. I still to this day play this Donner guitar for practice. It’s got a nice C neck that fits well in my hands. Nothing on here is high quality, but it still sounds good through an amp, great with guitar effects, and will hold tune long enough for practicing and playing. This is a great first guitar for beginners who aren’t sure if they will stick to playing/be committed.
Original Review:
Great Guitar and accessories! Packed very well, guitar sounds wonderful, right outta the box! Quick tuning, and your ready to roll. No complaints, just straight happy with this purchase! I haven’t played in over 30 years, so got this beginner guitar, and I can honestly say it sounds beautiful, looks beautiful. Great little amp, perfect for practice, not for performing. Don’t pass this up if your debating between othe guitars around this price point...a true bargain for what you get. Keep on Truckin’ my friends!
Update (4/1/2019): I have played this guitar daily since I first opened it in Christmas morning (2018). I still stand firm with my review. Only two negative points to mention now that I have spent lots of time with my sunburst friend. Guitar goes out of tune fairly easily and often when playing, and sometimes while having it on the guitar stand I purchased for it. It’s still very manageable, but a little irritating at times. 2nd negative is the tone and switching between pick ups. When switching between certain tones, there is no change. Not a huge deal for me, but depending on what your playing, not having certain tones right where you want them can be a little annoying. Otherwise, this is still an amazing deal and perfect for any beginner or casual player looking for guitar (package) in this price range. Enjoy✌🏼
UPDATE 12/13/2020: I brought this in to my local guitar shop, has it set up proper, and it sounds excellent. The switches work great, also had the frets filed down some, since they were poking out and caused some scratching and cuts on my left hand on my pointer finger. Easy fix you can actually do at home. The action is wonderfully low making it much easier for bar chords and sliding up and down the neck. So again, I stand by my original review - it’s a perfect guitar for beginners and those who are picking up a guitar after not playing for many years and are unsure if the commitment is there. Once you are sure your into playing/practicing daily (as I did after not playing for 20+ years), then save and buy a better guitar. I have done so and now use this for learning how to do set ups at home, string changes, lowing or raising the action, and great if you aren’t familiar with the inner workings of the electric guitar. Highly recommended to parents looking for an affordable option for your child, or if your an adult looking for an inexpensive guitar in the Stratocaster style, this one should not disappoint!

RGReviewed in Canada on January 31, 20225.0 out of 5 stars The BEST guitar setup for beginners
Color: BlackSize: 39" Right HandedVerified PurchaseBought this to use to teach my nephew guitar and was blown away by the value in this package.
The guitar is very well put together. Donner certainly knows where to cut costs and where not to in order to hit this price point. Fit and finish are great and fretwork is decent. The trem unit is not the best, but it functions, and this isn't something a beginner would notice for a while. Considering the price, I think that's a fair compromise. Someone new to guitar, especially a younger player, could easily be happy with this instrument for several years before needing to upgrade. With a few upgrades (new trem and locking tuners) I would be happy to gig with this guitar, it's really that good.
The included mini amp sounds good considering it's size. With 2 channels and a 3 band EQ, there's lots of opportunity for a new player to experiment with different tones. Best of all, the rechargeable battery lives up to expectations with 4-5 hours of play time on medium volume, so you won't be blowing through AAs like with a lot of other mini amps.
Donner is very generous with included accessories, and while they aren't the top of the line, they also are a cut above the usual inclusions you'd get with an inexpensive guitar. The included strap is sturdy (though I'd recommend strap locks as a first upgrade) and the cable looks like it can take a beating.
There are 2 things you should do immediately when you receive this guitar. First, throw away the strings that it came with and put on some good quality name brand strings. Second, lower the action as it seems to come quite high from the factory.
Overall, whether you're a new player or considering getting this for someone in your life who wants to start playing, don't hesitate to pick up this kit. Personally, I'll be buying this again for anyone else in my family who wants to learn guitar.

AndrewReviewed in Canada on October 7, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Great value for the money, excellent for beginners. Needs some adjusting before playing!
Color: blackSize: 39in Left HandedVerified PurchaseDonner is doing a great job competing with other beginner guitars. I'm coming from playing a Fender Squier Affinity (beginner series) and this Donner guitar is as good if not better in quality of the wood, and components.
That said, the components here are definitely all entry level. If you are serious about playing you probably want to replace the tuning heads (as these lose tune rather easily), the strings, probably the cheap plastic nut, and perhaps pickups (though the ones included are pretty good for the price).
The neck on this thing is just amazing for the price, and there's very little buzz (though there is some) coming from the pickups. That is minimized if you use the switch to select positions 2 or 4 where you're blending pickups. This buzzing is present on most entry level guitars and electronics so that's not really a deal breaker.
In terms of initial setup, I noticed right away that the bridge rests flat on the body, and it should be floating. There are several youtube videos on how to properly set up a floating tremolo bridge on a strat, so you'll want to follow one of those (just need a tuner (I'd recommend one of higher precision than what comes in the box) a screwdriver and that's it). I made a slight adjustment to the truss rod in the neck, but you're probably fine without it. Then I adjusted the height of the strings with the saddles (little allen key that comes in the box) so the strings don't buzz against the frets when you're fretting on the low frets. After that I had to adjust all the saddles (with a screwdriver) to fix the intonation of the guitar. (you want to ensure that the octave (12th fret) is also in tune after you tune the open string). Again guides for that are available online.
After all that was done, I now have a strat with a properly floating bridge, that's in tune, and stays in tune when fretting strings.
The downside here, is all of the extra stuff that comes in the box (tuner, extra strings, picks, capo, and the worlds tiniest amp) are kinda garbage... You'll want to get quality strings, better picks, a better constructed capo, and a more precise tuner if you're going to be using this for any length of time. What's included is enough to figure out if you (or a friend/family member) likes the feel of playing a guitar, but you'd be better served with higher quality accessories.
The gig bag is.. alright, it's a basic bag and will let you store your guitar in a closet or something without it collecting dust. If you're really going to be transporting this guitar I'd get something with more padding.
I wouldn't trust the strap... if you're going to be playing standing up I'd get something of higher quality.
After all my bashing of the included accessories though, this guitar, is really a steal for the price you pay. After properly setting it up, it would be a great beginner guitar for the first 2-3 years of learning, until you might consider something 2-3x the price. One other thing I'd strongly recommend you purchase is a proper stand for the guitar, you don't want to have to put it in the bag and take it out every time.
