I had a bunch of old miniDV tapes recorded on a Canon Optura 200MC that I wanted to get on my computer. My camcorder was broken so I borrowed an Optura 40 MC but needed a Firewire port to read in the videos. This card worked great on my Windows 10 system. Now I have all the videos on my computer.

Sheerness - what does sheerness have to do with a Firewire PCI card? Tech Support - What tech support is need to drop this in? If you bought it you know what it is and how to use it and install it. Easy to install - Yep.
Having upgraded to a faster PC 3 times in the past few years, I had no need for 1394 any longer (nothing I had uses that protocol). When I dug up dome old video tapes (deteriorating with time -Ferris coating FALLING off) I realized I had NOT Digitized the old family vacation/event videos. I still have my old Sony Hanndicam with 1394 output but was unable to input that protocol into my new PC. This PCIE board works well, allowing me to digitize the videos before the tape media disintegrates.
I needed this card to be to import files / video recordings from my early 2000s Panasonic mini-DV camcorder into my computer in 2020. The camera only seems to support firewire as a means of keeping the recordings digital, and of course neither my windows 10 pc nor laptop had a firewire port. Dealing with 20 year old technology is always a challenge. But like many, i have dozens of mini DV tapes with significant memories on them that are otherwise impossible to share.
First, the good. It arrived on time via prime, and in good condition. As advertised, it was mostly plug and play. It will fit in a pci e x1 Express card slot in your laptop (check your slots before ordering... most of my slots now are pci2 or something). Once i installed it (physically inserted it, tightened screw in back and closed up pc), I powered on. First attempt, the computer screen went blank and my heart sank. I reset and tried again and it came on. Once i had paired the card with a firewire cable and software to play with dv (i went with free winDV, version 1.2.3, circa 2003 downloadable from a guy in Czech Republic), i could capture signal and files from my camcorder onto my computer.
The bad: as is the reality in 2020, expect 0 tech support or instructions or manual included with the product. We are left using Amazon reviews and you tube to help is troubleshoot. the included cable (4 pin to 6 pin) 4pin side would not connect to either my camera or the card. Luckily, i purchased a separate firewire cable, which solved the problem. I am removing a star however because without this extra cable, what i bought would not have worked. Also, the issue with computer (windows 10, 64 bit) not booting up the first time was an annoyance. I wonder if the card will cause issues in the long term.
Verdict: despite some hiccups, the product was not hard to use or get working and it solved my problem. Be prepared to buy an extra cable, just in case. Have some patience with it, but it worked for me and the joy of finally getting videos on my computer that were basically previously lost was awesome. Good luck!
I want this card to allow me to use a Nikon slide scanner with Windows 7. After some searching on the Internet for help, I found the right drivers and it works fine.
Ordered this to digitize old videos. It installed easily and worked for a couple of days. However, the cable connection was loose enough that my software lost connection with my video camera if I ever moved the camera. Sometimes it would even get disconnected from the card itself. This was manageable, as I'd just reinsert the cord; it worked fine if the camera was completely still.
However, a couple of days into my transfer project, the recording stopped in the middle of a tape. I unplugged the firewire cord from the card, and when I plugged it back in, I heard a pop and smelled a slight burning smell. My computer turned off and would not turn back on. I uninstalled the card, and then my computer worked. Wondering if it was the slot that had gone bad, I re-installed the card in a different slot. The computer would not turn on. I took out the card, and the computer started working again.
I purchased a different card and cord set, and I haven't had any problems since; the new cord doesn't come loose like this one did.
I used this to transfer video files from old DVI tapes, using the firewire cable. The windows 10 detected the card right away and was able to transfer the video files from the tapes inside the camera.
The item was either faulty or incompatible with Windows. Wasn’t recognised by device manager in both Win11 and Win7. Had to replace with Startech on TI chipset, which worked out-of-the-box.
