There is nothing I can do– my husband is dead.

My teenage son lost his father. But the will? Don’t get me started. I’m a lawyer – my four sisters are too. My hot-shot investment guy will take care of our son; he told me he would. There are so many shocks in that will. Not the least of which is a cottage in France that nobody knew existed.

As the hits keep coming, I have no choice but to rally, thanks to my sisters. I will go to France, fix up this little stone shack, and secure my son’s future. Putting anxiety, grief, ambition, and a righteous work ethic behind, I answer the call.

What my son and I find in southwest France, in a little village in the Dordogne, is so much beauty, new friends, great wine. But also secrets— a squatter, a leaky roof, a creepy wine cellar, a rude mayor, a deadly fall, and more. How are these my problems? I stay and figure it out, because I must, using my fabulous list-making and legal research skills.

Because France, the future, and a certain handsome roofer make this way the only forward.

PROLOGUE

She didn’t want the summer to end. She wanted it to go on, full of flowers, wine, olives, and — possibility. Yes, possibility, that thing she was so afraid of. Now she hungered for it, she lived for it. She rolled onto her stomach and put the pillow over her head.

Was it possible to hide from your own life, from the prescribed steps, the set-in-stone trajectory? Was it possible to, say, change your name and live in France and be a completely different person, one your parents wouldn’t recognize, someone carefree, a nature girl, a bon vivant? Was it possible to forget the people you leave behind, those who nurtured and loved you, those who made you who you were? If you wished, wished, wished hard enough, would your fairy godmother, or an ogre-ish old widow, give you a string of magic pearls that would transform you into somebody who could do such a thing? A woman who could decide absolutely and exactly what would make her happy, right there, on the spot, and then actually do those things, without compromise or regret?

She sighed under the pillow. How old do you have to be to stop believing in fairy tales? Because she didn’t think she’d actually reached that age.

FRANCE, ROMANCE, TRUFFLE DOGS…AND A SOUPÇON OF DANGER!

A bit like Eat Pray Love meets murder mystery, Lise McClendon’s second Bennett Sisters mystery chronicles the traditional hunt for priceless European truffles, the unexpected thrill of romance overseas, the ups and downs of sisterly bonding rituals, and murderous intrigue in the heart of France.

Law practice is in the Bennett sisters' blood—along with designer suits and stilettos. But they've decided to ditch the more predictable Caribbean cruise or spa weekend at a five star hotel to celebrate Merle Bennett's 50th birthday hiking the French countryside of Dordogne. Merle, for her part, could use the break from her boyfriend James back in New York City. Plus there’s the endless horizon of roses and vineyards, the scent of lavender, the delicate karma of sisterhood—resplendent with its bickering and gossip—and, oh yes, the wine.

There’s just one catch: Merle’s little sister Francie has decided to bring along a sixth wheel: a work colleague named Gillian Sargent, whose utter aloofness wouldn’t be so bad were it not peppered by constant singing, an unwanted accompaniment to the idyllic French landscape. It’s not just that Gillian throws off the finely tuned five-spoke Bennett sister spin: truth be told, Merle can’t seem to find a single redeeming quality about her.

Somewhere along the walking trail, Gillian stumbles upon an injured dog— possibly a missing truffle hunter--and after several days of puzzling behavior, she and the pooch disappear without a trace. As if this weren’t drama enough, Merle’s boyfriend shows up unannounced—as does her French lover. Zut alors! And yet…Vive la France!

The Girl in the Empty Dress is a delicate mix of sisterly laughs and international intrigue, sure to delight cozy mystery fans and armchair travelers alike.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE--FESTIVITIES, FUN, FOOD, AND FRAUD!

It’s Bridget Jones does Christmas in Manhattan--plus a dash of international espionage--in this romantic cozy mystery that mixes sisterly love with a world famous drag queen, a shameful family past, and an irresistible French investigator.

Christmas in the Big Apple promises to be especially festive, as all five Bennett sisters are in town for a very special occasion: Annie, the oldest Bennett, is engaged at the tender age of fifty-five—to a charming Scottish man who’s crazy about her.

But while Bohemian Annie is securely and happily in love with a devoted fiancé, Merle-in-the-middle is navigating the roller coaster of her own love life: Pascal, her one-time French summer fling, has unexpectedly flown to New York for the holidays—and now she’s waiting for him in the bustling lobby of the New York City Hilton Hotel, the very same venue as her family’s engagement festivities. Pascal says he’s come to see Merle (and her son, Tristan), and he’s staying in town through the New Year--but why? A relationship ultimatum? Or is there something more mysterious in the works? Because Pascal is a very mysterious dude.

On the walk back from engagement cocktails at a romantic bistro, Pascal asks Merle, Annie, and her fiance to accompany him to a little-known club where he promised his brother he’d look up a friend of his. Intrigued, Merle and company follow him to the village, where they’re treated to … a drag revue. Turns out the “friend” is a drag queen, a Marilyn Monroe look-alike who goes by the name Bosom Drearie. But later, Francie, the next-to- youngest Bennett sister, says she’s seen Bosom Drearie before –and she looked different from her sisters’ description—plus, Francie’d heard the performer got fired and had to reinvent herself. That gets the sisters’ sleuth-sense up: Could it be the Bosom Drearie Pascal was searching for is an imposter? Perhaps a wanted one?

The truth starts to come out when Pascal admits to Merle that Bosom Drearie is a person of interest to the French Police Nationale—and Merle begins to question his intentions. Is he in New York solely on police business? But it may not be so simple—her own family may be involved. She learns the French police are reopening the investigation into a defunct wine business once owned by her late husband's father—50 years after a questionable deal—and can’t help but worry her family’s shameful past is tied to her romantic interest... A romantic interest she can't seem to resist...

Festivities, fun, food, and fraud—not to mention mystery and romance—abound in this delicious holiday installment of the Bennett sisters’ cozy adventures.

A SKETCHY FRENCHMAN AT THE WEDDING…ALONG WITH A FEW DARK SECRETS!

Wedding bells sound in the Scottish countryside as the Bennett sisters travel across the pond to celebrate a very special occasion... A week littered with an unexpected torrential rainstorm, a recalcitrant housekeeper, a sister who tipples, and another who chases after sketchy Frenchmen.

In spite of her bohemian tendencies and protestations, Annie—the eldest Bennett sister—is finally getting hitched to Callum Logan, the man of her dreams, in the picture-postcard idyllic Scottish Highlands. The mother of the groom has generously put up the Bennett family in her Kincardie House estate, a gorgeous hunting lodge that’s been in the Logan family for generations. Annie knew Callum’s family was well-off, but she didn’t know they lived like European royalty. And the fact that Annie is fourteen years older than her husband-to-be isn’t exactly a tidbit “Mother” Logan is too fond of. That said, Annie has reservations of her own. Is it just pre-wedding jitters? Or is she really willing to relinquish her much-loved independence in her mid-50s?

Merle’s brought Pascal along for the week of jubilee, which she finds to be simultaneously thrilling and incredibly romantic… but is it excitement she’s feeling for her sister? Or doom? For his part, Pascal’s relieved to finally spend time with Merle after six long, dry months apart. But how can they continue like this, an ocean between them—his policeman’s salary hardly permitting flying over to see her on every whim… Does he have to give her up? Or should he find a new job in the States?

Meanwhile, Francie frets about her seemingly perpetual third wheeling in coupledom, a thought she finds herself dulling with a little too much Scotch. Elise plans to dive into exotic Scotland head-first, casting aside previously-upheld polite female lawyer niceties: overseas, all bets are off, and she’s got her roving eye on Bruno, a mysterious man from Paris she met at the Edinburgh railway station—a man whose Napoleonesque looks and furtive behavior put Pascal’s investigator instincts on high alert.

And amidst the Highlands’ signature fog, rain, sheep, and heather—not to mention the festivities’ decadent five course meals, Scottish whisky, fine sparkling wines, and family drama—a rare rainstorm with hurricane-force winds is heading right for the wedding party. And Jinty Arbuckle, the high-strung estate housekeeper, struggles to keep the Kincardie House in order and its brash American guests happy, all the while guarding secrets of her own.

A little bit chick lit, a touch of cozy mystery, a whole lot of humor, romance, suspense, and downright excellent writing. Guaranteed a rollicking ride for fans of all of the above!

Ooh-la-la, who doesn't love a Frenchman?

Merle Bennett goes back to France -- and her Frenchman -- in this fifth installment of the Bennett Sisters mysteries. Sure that La Belle France will cure all her ills, and help her write a novel about the French Revolution, she sets out to prove her theory correct. Pascal, her Frenchman, scoffs at this. As a policeman he knows France is pretty to look at but not all that pretty under the surface.

While Merle writes and renovates her stone cottage, Pascal encounters an old enemy, a man he put in prison years before. When Pascal disappears Merle isn't sure if their relationship is over, or something terrible has happened.

'The Frenchman' includes chapters of Merle's novel, a glimpse into life during the turmoil of the Revolution. With goats and a handsome stranger! Read the finished version of Merle's novel, 'Odette and the Great Fear,' here on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2CuJLmO

A soupçon of danger, a brush with 'madame guillotine,' and the quirky characters of the French countryside, all collide in this new installment of the Bennett Sisters Mysteries, set in la belle France-- where, obviously, wine, sunshine, sunflowers, and Frenchmen cure all ills. Or do they?

Deep in the French countryside-- as the country reels through rebellion, beheadings, and starvation-- a goat-herder named Odette is trying to survive. Just that-- survival is on her mind. Since she marched to Versailles with a group of Parisian women to protest the high prices of wheat, her life has spun out of control. She's fled the capital for the countryside. But what will happen to her? Can she stay in the Dordogne where the kindly farmers have taken pity on her?

'Odette and the Great Fear' is a bonus novella from the novel, 'The Frenchman,' by Lise McClendon. Merle Bennett is writing a gothic romance by that name, and sample chapters are included in 'The Frenchman.' Here the story is fleshed out, characters are made clear, and outcomes are decided. Will Odette and her handsome stranger find each other? How did the Count get his horrible scar? Will the villagers burn out the nobles for good?

Read 'The Frenchman' for the story of how Merle Bennett came to write 'Odette and the Great Fear.'

When Francie Bennett, 4th in the line of lawyer/sisters, comes under serious allegations of wrongdoing at her law firm, she is mortified to learn she must take a leave of absence. Just a formality, they say, but she is sure this is the end of her reputation and her law career. Will she sit around her apartment and eat cheese, drink wine, and binge Netflix for weeks while hoping it gets worked out?

ZUT ALORS! NON! She is off to Paris on assignment by the mother of a student jailed for serious drug crimes in France. She stays with her sister Merle and her boyfriend, the debonair policier Pascal, in the Marais district while trying to navigate the murky waters of the French criminal system. He looks guilty as hell, but first impressions can be confusing, especially inside one of France's worst medieval prisons.

Instead of the boring lad she flicked away, Dylan Hardy is now sophisticated and suave-- and speaks perfect French from working in an international law firm. And he's single again, Merle discovers, eager to find her sister a real boyfriend after many rejects over the years.

IT'S SPRINGTIME IN PARIS-- or would be if the rain would ever stop. In between visiting the student in prison, gumshoeing about his University, and witnessing drug stings gone wrong, Francie longs to find blooming cherry trees that make Paris the magical place she imagines it is. Will Dylan's sudden re-appearance in her life be a good thing, or a repeat of her many romantic failures? Will she figure out what is going on with the drug dealer/student? Will she ever find her pink trees of legend?

More international intrigue, murder, and romance for the Bennett Sisters overseas in the newest entry to the bestselling women's fiction and suspense series. The next to youngest Bennett Sister, Francie Bennett (Blame it on Paris) is a hard-charging attorney whose boyfriend Dylan Hardy invites her to join him in Paris to help with a client. When Axelle Fourcier left Paris behind after the student riots of 1968, she vowed never to go back. She made a life for herself in America as a professor. But now a beloved aunt, age 104, has died and left her an inheritance to be shared with a cousin she never met. A fabulous Belle Epoque apartment in Paris filled with pop art from the '50s and '60s is just the start of Axelle's discoveries in Paris. Wrangling with her slick cousin for the proceeds is distasteful but oh so French. Then the apartment is broken into, a friend is murdered, and Axelle's fears that the French state is once again conspiring against her seem very plausible. Francie tries to deal with her cranky client, her own new relationship, and her boyfriend's nine-year-old daughter, as the estate problems spin out of control. Intrigue, romance, Paris and the Dordogne, and a soupçon of murder, wrapped in the legal and art world of France bring more than a few 'Bolts from the Blue' to the Bennett Sisters.

Mystery, romance, adventure, and more are in store for the youngest of five sisters, lawyers all, when she signs up to work at a lavender farm in Provence in Lost in Lavender, a Bennett Sisters Mystery.

Facing a crossroads-- both career and personal-- the youngest of the five Bennett Sisters, Elise, does what she does best: she runs away to think. This time she runs to a farm in Provence that produces heaven-scented lavender for oils. The area is famous for the beautiful purple flower, the symbol of this southern region of France. Her sisters are stumped. Elise never seemed like the farming type, or even gardening, for that matter. But she's signed up for a farm stay vacation, an idea she got from an unlikely source, the trophy wife of one of her law partners.

When she arrives, courtesy her older sister Merle who drives her to the Luberon from the Dordogne, she discovers she is the only guest at the picturesque family farm who is not a college student. The rest are all doing a French language exchange program and are 20 years younger than Elise, leaving her feeling like an outsider and wondering about her life choices. Not only is her judgment in men and careers awful, but she can't even plan a decent vacation.

Meanwhile in the Dordogne, Merle's niece, Willow, arrives for some R&R before she starts law school. But she brings a few surprises with her, a boyfriend plus Elise's fiancé. Or is it ex-fiancé? It will take several sisters-- and of course Pascal-- to unravel the facts as all descend on southern France for July in the heat and lavender.

Suspense, romance, intrigue, and humor as the summer heats up for the Bennett Sisters again. Another delicious adventure in international travel and cozy mystery as the Bennett Sisters fight their way to truth, justice, and a perhaps a summer fling, deep in the French countryside. A summer fling in France never hurt anyone, now did it?

SUSPENSE, MYSTERY, WINE, and FAMILY DRAMA in this cozy mystery set in France, number 18 in the series.

Stretched thin between her sisters in the US and her new life in France, Merle Bennett is feeling the strain of obligations. That is even before Pascal's grape harvest goes sideways, her father falls ill, and her older sister shows up in France unexpectedly. Her son Tristan and sister Stasia then inexplicably disappear.

Asking questions like 'how do you make everyone happy' and 'do they even want to be helped,' Merle muddles through, trying to keep her head above water and panic at bay. Can she keep hope alive and her seemingly idyllic life in a French vineyard at least a little bit charming? Is that too much to ask for?

Join Pascal and Merle for another adventure in France, roaming the vineyards of the Bordeaux wine region, struggling with things they do not yet understand. Will the neighbors stop harassing them? Who sabotaged the harvester? Where are Tristan and Stasia? Can they harvest the grapes before they spoil on the vines?

Join Merle and Pascal in southwest France for another exciting adventure in winemaking, romance, murder, and intrigue!

For American Merle Bennett and her French partner, Pascal d'Onscon, life in rural France is a perfect jumping off point for adventure, intrigue, romance, and mystery. MONSIEUR MOONLIGHT is number 19 in the series, following
Here There and Everywhere. Read The Tomb, an epilogue of CHÂTEAU DES CORBEAUX, to follow along with elements of this story.

Life at the vineyard of Château des Corbeaux should be quiet and calm in early spring in the Dordogne. But a series of events at Pascal's office -- and at the Château itself --make it a chaotic time. Government bureaucrats search the house for illegally looted ancient objects, and one of Pascal's co-workers dies suddenly. And Merle thought keeping baby chicks alive would be her only problem this spring.

Duelling mysteries keep Merle and Pascal on their toes, combined with the arrival of an unwelcome relative. Why is he here? How can Pascal get rid of 'Monsieur Moonlight'? At the Cité du Vin the sudden death throws the office into chaos. Was the culprit a poisonous tea cake... or something else equally sinister?

When her sister volunteers to help renovate the two cottages she owns in France, Merle is happy to have company. The cottages are a disaster– especially one that has mostly been inhabited by rodents for years. But inside the cottage are surprises. A packet of letters dating from World War One intrigue Merle. What happened to this soldier who was writing to his girlfriend back in England? Does his last letter, telling her to forget him, mean something terrible happened to him?

As she digs deeper into the past Merle enlists another sister, Annie, to meet her in southern England. Here on the so-called English Riviera was where both lovers once lived. Could their fates be discovered there?

The mystery of Birdie and Felix unwinds, bit by bit, as Merle gets closer to the awful truth of what happened. Read Felix’s letters, especially the last one, along with the Bennett Sisters in this latest mystery, number 20 in the series.
