Compared to the other two reviews, mine is going into some detail so readers will better know what they’re in for, if they choose this book. At the same time, I’m going to be much briefer than my customary review.

BLUSH FACTOR: In terms of profanities, this is a read safe for all audiences. No serious cussing at all. In terms of sexual scenes, though, it’s a little more complicated. If I had a young teenage daughter, I don’t know if I would want her reading the scenes. While they are not especially graphic, they certainly are so terrifically written that, for some, it could be an advertisement promoting sex. In other words, I as a father, or grandfather, would blush if reading this to a youngster. Mind you, I am not criticizing. In fact, quite the opposite. So well-written it kept me turning the pages.

POV: After the opening, mostly first person. But changes with chapters.

THE WRITING: Very smooth writing that comes across as intimate and immediate. Almost as though the people are right there with me.

ADVENTURE: Yes.

SOUL: Yes, this writing has soul. The narrator bares it for us all to feel his pain.

BOTTOM LINE

Four stars out of five. If you’re looking for a fantasy romance with intrigue, this could be ideal for you.

I have already succumbed to the second in the Freya series. There are tropes here, but you knew you were reading fantasy, right? Involving characters, interesting surroundings, no maddening, jarring anachronisms or under-explained principles in the narrative. Recommended...but know that you will be back for more.

This is a starter series for three different fantasy series. I read the first book, but didn't want to continue to the two others where I'd need to read on to finish the stories.
I did enjoy the book I started. It's slow to start, but an interesting premise when you get in to it. I did feel that some of the setup could have been skipped to allow more of the story to be told.

It's interesting that some people give these stories 5 stars and others a very low rating. I don't understand how some reviewers gave these 5 stars as I would agree with the few that said they found the stories confusing. I never became engrossed by the stories or the characters, and I found the stories kept repeating the same lines/thoughts again and again which just felt like filling with themes like 'suddenly it made sense' (but without explanation). The style is very bitty and broken up, and one of the stories is written in first person which I personally think is a really poor style of writing and should really only be used for biographies. I found the first two books uninteresting, confusing, badly constructed and pretty dull. The first novel promised a different slant to the more 'normal' sci-fi/fantasy theme, but it took far too long to really get nowhere and was not involving enough to make me want to read any more. Sorry this is so negative but I guess you get the idea that I wasn't impressed.
