Bought this for someone else who's having a hard time getting good rice out of their countertop rice cooker. I've had a few similar to this growing up and even currently throughout my life and I do this would be an easy reliable option. It works as expected. Had zero issues with any kind of melting or weird burn spots even in a tiny microwave is that the size is almost too big for.I really bought it mainly for just making rice but it comes with so many accessories which is really cool. the person I bought it for also didn't have any measuring cups or spoons so this was great for the price to include measuring utensils and a steamer basket and tray. For simple Rice my recipes always been 2 cups long grain rice, three cups water, a tablespoon of oil, teaspoon of salt. Wash the rice at least three times and strain it. After the final rinse pour in 3 cups of cold water and the oil and salt, give it a stir put the to lids on and pop it in the microwave for 20 minutes. once it's done you can leave it in the microwave OFF a few more or take it out and set it on the counter and let it sit for 5 minutes then fluff.Perfect rice every time. At least that's how my mama showed me a long time ago and I've always loved it.Stores in the fridge easily in container and can be reheated that way with a splash of water. for reheating rice though I definitely recommend only taking the portion that you want and heating it instead of reheating an entire container multiple times.
I haven't used my cooker for pasta or veggies yet, but I used it for rice for the first time yesterday, and I was so blown away to have PERFECT rice out of the microwave! Yippee! No more scrubbing pots or the rice cooker! I followed the included directions exactly for my Jasmine Rice. Rinsed it, measured in the water and salt, put on the inner and outer lids, and cooked it for the recommended time at 70% power (as recommended for microwaves that are 1000 watts or greater). No stirring needed during the cooking time-- just set the microwave and leave it alone! So easy! When the recommended time was up, I didn't take off the lid right away; I just let the rice sit for a few minutes while I finished preparing my meal. The rice was absolutely perfect! I was really surprised, because I've tried multiple times to cook rice in the microwave using the directions on the bag of rice or recipes from the Internet, all with terrible, inedible results. I chose to prepare a large amount of rice and had a lot left over. I put the lid on and stored the rice in my fridge, right inside the cooker! So convenient! Everything in the set is dishwasher safe. Even though I haven't yet used this cooker for pasta or veggies, the great results with rice make it worth the price for me already! I eat a lot of rice because of special dietary needs, and I can tell this microwave rice cooker is going to become an indispensable kitchen tool for me. I highly recommend it! I am looking forward to cooking veggies and pasta in it, too. The included measuring cups and spoons and the pasta measure make this set a really good value. I also think it would make a terrific gift! My only wish is that they would make this set in some pretty colors, rather than grey, which seems kind of drab to me. A sunny yellow or trendy turquoise blue or classic red maybe? But that's a small complaint for a really reasonably-priced, immensely useful set! I'm definitely happy with my purchase!
While I still stand by my original opinion that this cooker makes great rice, over time the plastic material from which the container is made has degraded and become harder to clean since the inside surface is no longer smooth, but rough. Because of that I am revising my rating to 3 from 5. Microwaving is still a great way to cook rice, but I would recommend a higher quality cooker, preferably one that is ceramic or glass.
[Original review]: I've cooked several batches of rice since the rice cooker I ordered was delivered a couple of days ago. My reaction on cooking my first batch of rice in it? Wow!
Even though this was recommended by a friend, I was still a bit skeptical about cooking rice in a microwave oven. But I'm too cheap/poor to buy a "real" rice cooker, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Apparently, my skepticism was unfounded. That first one was the best batch of rice I've cooked in years. Fluffy, perfectly cooked, and ridiculously simple to make - just add the correct amount of rice and water (after first washing the rice), pop it into the microwave, set the timer and walk away. The subsequent ones were the same - perfect. Until... I ran low rice and had to make a smaller batch. The first few weren't huge, just two scoops of the included measuring cup and 1.5 times as much water. And all were perfect. The last batch was only half as large, but I wasn't paying attention and set the microwave for the same time as the larger batches. The difference wasn't big, but it was noticeable. The quality of this rice was "only" great, rather than awesomely perfect. So pay attention to your times and quantity. Time to hit the grocery store and grab a big bag of rice. I think I'm going to be using this thing a lot.
I LOVE it!
Followup: Now that I've had this a little longer I do have to say there is a drawback to it. It is so fast and easy to make great rice that I've already put on a few extra pounds. Oh well...
I don't write a lot of reviews but I feel like I had to. I bought this about 2 years ago, threw it in a closet and recently decided to give it a try. I was convinced this wouldn't make rice well. So I made pasta and that was great. Perfect in fact. I was so surprised so I decided to try 3 cups of jasmine rice and followed the directions; even the 70% power on the microwave. I was so freaking impressed. The rice was perfect from the top to the very bottom. I turned it over into a big wide pan and every piece of rice was perfect. Not sticky. Nothing. Just perfect. I have also used it to boil potatoes and yuca root. Unbelievable! If you're on the fence just get this thing.
First off, I subtracted 1 star based on the number of recent reviews complaining of scaling and and such -- 50/50 chance this is user error and they're scrubbing it with steel wool or something abrasive, equally likely my 3 weeks of ownership is insufficient to know for sure (although I'm using it almost daily). I've made instant potatoes, real mashed potatoes, basmati and jasmine rice, and even a packet of "spanish rice" with powdered seasoning -- and mine still looks brand new. IMHO, the interior if this product is EXCELLENT -- polished so smooth it has never needed more than a quick soak to remove even the oil and coloration from each dish -- easily the most non-stick "plastic" item I've encountered. I've cleaned it with a nylon dish brush repeatedly, and washed all components in the top rack of a dishwasher, and I see no sign of deterioration whatsoever. Time will tell, but for the price I'd say it can't be beat.
I freaking love this rice cooker! I follow the directions and it turns out perfect every time. I even decided to be a rebel and not prewash my rice and it still turned out perfect! Just make sure you set your microwave at 70% power ;) I love how quickly it cooks the rice and without that mess that boiling on the stove makes. It’s easy to store your leftovers in the container and it’s super easy to wipe clean after. The rice scoop that comes with it is complete garbage.
All items good quality. design is space saving for easy storing. So many useful items. Well packed in box plus instruction book on how to best cook with speed.
I prefer this to the black and decker electric rice cooker I also own. This rice cooker is much faster and seems to cook the rice better than my electric cooker. Coconut rice made in this is fantastic! Takes 13 min in the microwave to make 4 cups of rice.
