Battlefield Scientology: Exposing L Ron Hubbard's Dangerous "Religion" Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 137 ratings

"Battlefield Scientology: Exposing L.Ron Hubbard's Dangerous Religion" contains 33 articles (& over 50 photos) from Tony Ortega's popular blog ("The Underground Bunker) with intros to the 5 sections by Paulette Cooper ("The Scandal of Scientology." )

At last two of the best-known Scientology exposé writers team up to tell the whole story... from Scientology celebrities, (and how the church uses and abuses them) to the Sea Org (Scientology’s highest level where members who join sign billion-year-contracts to work for them throughout their entire lives) to mysterious deaths, to fair game (from the viewpoint of the attackers as well as the victims) to how Hubbard got some of his (weirder) ideas, to Scientology today (including signs of their decline) and much more.

This book was written for people who (think they) know just about everything there is to know about Scientology, to those who know nothing; the stories range from early Hubbard to what is happening today. The chapters were chosen to appeal not only to former Scientologists, but also never-Scientologists, as well as to people who never bought a single book of theirs to those who spent most of their lives [and some believe, even their past lives] in it.

The 360+ pages and photos reflect not only that what's interesting, but also what's important in understanding what has happened in this church, right down to what's happening today.

Tony Ortega has been chronicling events in Scientology since the early ‘90’s and Paulette Cooper wrote the first major exposé of Scientology ("The Scandal of Scientology") in 1968. She then spent the next 15 years exposing them while they went after her with vengeance. This is chronicled in Tony's first book, "The Unbreakable Miss Lovely."

This book is very informative and provides amazing insight into how Scientology operates. It’s a collection of some of the best articles from The Underground Bunker (tonyortega.org), a veritable vault of information related to Scientology, with articles written daily by journalist and author Tony Ortega, who collaborated on this book with fellow journalist and author Paulette Cooper, who has had her own run-ins with the Church of Scientology, as they tried to destroy her life when she began exposing the depraved nature of this organization (that shocking story can be read in another Tony Ortega book, The Unbreakable Miss Lovely).

Whether you’ve followed the bizarre history of Scientology for decades, became recently interested in the subject, or are just now hearing about it for the first time, Battlefield Scientology: Exposing L Ron Hubbard’s Dangerous “Religion”, is a must-read for anyone who wishes to learn more about the inner workings and culture of an organization that calls itself a “religion”, yet operates as a money-hungry cult, that commits some of the worst violations of fundamental human rights, then tries to ruin the lives and reputation of anyone who doesn’t conform to their way of thinking (using tax exempt money, subsidized by tax-payers), all emanating from the deranged mind of a greedy, self-absorbed, science fiction writer named L. Ron Hubbard.

I’m interested in helping people get away from this cult. This book helps explain how they get people to join and how they suck the money from everyone.,

i follow Tony's blog (The Underground Bunker) and have heard him speak with Paulette Cooper. A nice primer to get you started on if you are still yet unaware. If for no other reason, buy the book to support the cause. Help Clearwater Go Clear of Scientology.

I’m a never-in who is fascinated by this cult. The things they get away with and thrive on are incredible and hard to believe in this day and age. Just when you think humanity has matured, you realize only a small portion are using their critical thinking skills. Scientologists are not. Brainwashing at its finest! I’ve read many books on this topic and this one has some new stories and details. Highly recommend!

Learned a lot of new stuff and confirmed a lot I thought I knew. This is truly a cult, not a religion.
The US should remove their tax exemption!

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Collection of Scientology Stories
Reviewed in Canada on November 29, 2018
There are many exposés on Scientology out there, but his book is unique because it is a collection of stories about people who have experienced it first hand. It is an excellent introduction to the worst abuses of the organization. It includes details about the pampered celebrities, the abuses and even death within and the false propaganda surrounding its founder. A fascinating read and valuable information to anyone who may be vulnerable and tempted to join this cult. Tony Ortega and Paulette Cooper are both brilliantly qualified journalists, with decades of research and reporting between them. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate exposé of the sinister cult of Scientology
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 5, 2018
Scientology is the sinister American "cult of celebrity" which counts Tom Cruise and John Travolta among its members and claims millions of followers worldwide. The truth, like everything in Scientology, is very different. For decades the media has been afraid to expose their manifold and truly frightening abuses because they are one of the wealthiest and most litigious organisations on earth, sparing nothing to ruin their critics.

Tony Ortega is one of very few reporters who have refused to be intimidated by the cult and has built the definitive collection of articles at his Underground Bunker blog which over the years has become the first place to go for breaking news, deep investigative pieces and exposés of their front groups which look legitimate but are there purely to lure in new members. Tony is the go-to reporter for other media outlets when they need a quote, or film-makers like Alex Gibney when they need background for movies and documentaries. His site is often the first place newly-escaped members approach to tell their stories. With tips coming in from all around the world on a daily basis and sources embedded deep within Scientology's membership Tony is able to put up a new article every single day.

Tony's previous book - the stellar "Unbreakable Miss Lovely" - is about journalist Paulette Cooper, Ortega's co-writer on Battlefield Scientology, who was one of the first reporters to write a full-length book, The Scandal of Scientology, about the organisation back in the early 1970s. The harassment Paulette was subjected to is almost too awful to comprehend. Scientology framed her for a bomb threat, the plot only uncovered when the FBI raided Scientology in 1977 and discovered the planning documents as Paulette was waiting to learn whether she would be imprisoned. Wording in these documents contained such gems as we need to arrange to have Paulette "incarcerated in a mental institution or jail or at least to hit her so hard that she drops her attacks". They stole pages from her therapy sessions and sent them to her parents, moved a member of the Guardian's Office - their internal spy wing - into Paulette's home as a "lodger" who ultimately tried to persuade her to jump off the roof of her apartment building to end the unbearable stress she was under. Scientology instituted a total of nineteen lawsuits against Cooper from all over the world so there was rarely a time she was not fighting to defend herself in court over a period of years.

A very powerful, very wealthy, very frightening cult - but thanks to fearless journalists like Ortega and Cooper - who have combined their decades of research into Scientology for this book - they are no longer able to hide behind their dirty tricks or their phalanx of lawyers.

Tony Ortega and Paulette Cooper reveal much information that Scientology top leaders would prefer to keep hidden. The authors have provided details that aare new even to those who have sought the truth about Scientology for years. Get it, read it and spread the shocking truth about this 'religion' and its founder who thought so highly of human beings that he and his fellow Scientologists charged exhorbitant fees that were out of the reach of the average hard working men and women.
