Possible USB-A port design flaw and Underwhelming USB-C charging performance

Issue 1) Powered USB-A port is unstable. WebCam and microphone would disconnect from it regularly. Seemed to be related to the physical construction as the slightest movements would unseat the devices digital connection. I did not have this issue with the same camera and microphone in the 2 other USB-A ports. This issue took me a while to diagnose and after working with Anker customer service they sent a replacement. The replacement has the same issue albeit not quite as bad leading me to believe this is a design flaw or a flaw related to the batch produced that I was sold. It also basically leaves me with an adapter now restricted to 2 USB-A ports and 1 USB-C. I haven't tested the 'powered' capability of the USB-A port.

Issue 2) The USB-C port is advertised as capable of 45W of charging power. The Apple MacBookPro charging bricks are 61W. I started charging my 2020 MacbookPro at 24% power and tested 2 of the Anker adapters with a brand new MacBook Pro charging brick, a 4-year old brick, a 3rd party USB-C cable (2 years old), a new Apple brand USB-C cable and the combinations therein.

The charging times calculated for
straight into the MacBook Pro USB-C port: 2h 45min - 3h 1min (165min -181min)
into the Anker adapters: 3h 25min - 6h 47 min. (205min - 407min) with 3/4 combinations that went through the Anker adapter >5 hours.

For the hardware I listed above, I would not advise this product. The Anker customer service was great and I've had a great experience with every other Anker product so I still plan to buy more of them unless I come across another (possibly) flawed design.

Sketchy Power Delivery (PD) connection

I'm using this hub with a 2019 MacBook Pro 13" with Touch Bar. You'd think 4 Thunderbolt/USB-C ports would be enough, but they're not! I needed a way to consolidate power, two external 5 TB USB hard drives and a phone charging cable into one port to keep the other 3 free. On paper this hub is just what I would need, and my past experience with the quality of Anker products made me specifically seek this out over one of the overwhelming array of "no-name" brands flooding Amazon these days.

For the most part, this does what I need it to do, but I *frequently* find that the Power Delivery is not adequate, even though I have it connected to the 60W (actually 61W, I think) power brick that came with my MacBook Pro. That *should* be exactly what it needs, and most of the time it works, but it often spontaneously drops power, causing the Mac to run from battery and, much worse, occasionally the external USB disks will disconnect. This is, not surprisingly, worse when I have a phone charging through it as well, but I don't do that very often.

Fortunately I've never been in the middle of a disk write operation when the connection has dropped, because I've got 25 years of files, plus a lot of current large video projects, living on these external drives.

If it weren't for this power issue, I would absolutely rate this hub 5 stars. But I feel like it's a ticking time bomb for my archived data. (Yet I'm still using it because at the moment it's my only option.)

Since Apple, in its wisdom, has eliminated any standard USB ports from the MacBook pro, it is essential to have some sort of adapter that connects ordinary USB 3.0 plugs to the Mac's USB C ports. I've had good luck with several Anker products over the years, and so far, this hub lives up to what I expect from Anker. It is well designed and quite thin, so it travels well without unnecessary bulk. I often connect cameras, external drives, etc. to my MacBook pro, so having three USB 3.0 ports is handy. This particular adapter also offers the option of connection to an external power source (i.e., 110 outlet, but note that that cord is not included) to provide charging capability. I have not tried that, as the Anker device works fine for my needs with bus power from the laptop. I also carry a tiny Anker card reader, a mere 1 x 2 inches, which plugs into the USB adapter and lets me read data from various cameras' memory cards. There are plenty of USB C to 3.0 adapters out there, but the Anker's size, think style and flexibility work well for me. Takes up little space and does the job.

USB-C Port Not for Data

I bought this because other reviewers said the USB-C input would pass data. It does not. This really works only with 3 USB-A inputs. The USB-C input is for power only. Anker's website doesn't list all models of hubs, so I wasn't able to get clearer information before ordering. Unfortunate, because I have several other Anker products and have been very happy with them. Returning for refund.

Bought this hub for my Pixelbook. Bought Anker as I have been happy with their products in the past. Wanted power delivery so I wouldn't have to move cables around and could leave power connected thru the hub for charging. Charging rate is a slightly diminished (as expected so that is fine). Problem is that when the device is sleeping charging stops. This makes power delivery almost useless as now I have to move cables around if i am done using the Pixelbook but it needs to continue charging. Of course I threw out the box before I realized this, so I doubt I can return it...

UPDATE: Anker support has contacted me and offered to send a replacement hub to try. They are also asking for me to return the problem hub for them to examine. Great to have bought from a company that takes support seriously!
I'll update when I get to test the replacement hub.
Another Update: The replacement hub works fine, so I updated to 5 stars.
