I ordered an LG G7 ThinQ for $200, but I now have an LG V40 ThinQ. I did get what I ordered. So... what happened?

First, the phone I got was in great condition. There were just a few issues.

1. Getting it set up with my carrier (Visible) took some effort.
2. It wasn't showing up as a Google Play Certified device, so some apps (like Netflix) couldn't be installed.
3. It wasn't receiving OTA updates and was still on Android 8.

I tried flashing a more modern stock firmware to it and was able to get my carrier to accept it, but I was only able to get up to Android 9 and still wasn't seeing OTA updates - nor was it Google Play certified. The IMEI was that of an unlocked phone, but the fact that Google thought it had been tampered with made me suspicious. I contacted the seller, RE-CELL, and they offered to let me return it for a refund or upgrade to either a V40 for $40 extra or a G8 for $80 extra. They confirmed that they both would have Android 10, would be factory unlocked, and would be Google Play certified.

Only one of those was true. The phone was, in fact, Google Play certified, but it had a Sprint IMEI and I couldn't get it set up on the carrier. I cross-flashed it to the unlocked firmware, following someone else's advice online, and was able to get it working with my carrier while still being Google Play certified. It's on Android 9 but I may be able to get OTA updates - if not, I'll be able to update it to Android 10 manually, once that OS update is pushed.

Both phones have been great values for the money.

Just to be clear this is a great phone, I have one for my personal use and it is an amazing value. This review is for the seller and the misleading way they sell these phones. I bought this phone for my wife, because I love mine. We got it and installed her SIM card from her old phone (we use T-mobile). The first thing I did was attempt to upgrade the operating system. These phones come with Android 8.0, however, LG has since pushed out Android 10.0 for these phones. I got a message that the phone was up to date and no updates were available. How can this be, when my phone is running android 10.0. I then checked the last security update on this phone, it was from September 2018, again it would not update. On my phone the last Security update is April 1, 2020. I did some digging and found that LG has a program you can install on your PC. You can connect you phone to you PC and get the updates directly from LG. I did this using the LG bridge software. When I connected to the service I got a message back from LG that they did not recognize this phone and could not complete an update. Next up, I found that there were certain apps within the app store that would not load or work on this phone (Disney+ was one of them). I have contacted the seller and was told that the phone was fully unlocked and I needed to use an APK sideloader to access all of the apps. My wife is not a techno guru, she just wants a phone that works and apps that work from the App store. So yes, this phone works with any carrier, but it is not truly unlocked for any carrier. If you don't care about using the app store, or about security updates, go for it. For my wife that's not cool, the phone is going back, and I will find another seller that provides models that are fully compatible with T-mobile. P

Edit 4/2/2020: After trying to set up Google Pay, I discovered that this phone has the SW for the unlocked model flashed onto it, LMG710ULM, but is definitely not the factoy unlocked model. It won't update to Pie and GPay will not work, but other than that the phone is great. I believe the sellers should be a bit more honest about these things, or maybe they don't know about them. I'm still enjoying the phone and will be keeping it.

I was worried about buying a renewed phone but as soon as I opened the box, my worries were put to rest. My LG G7 looked brand new, no signs of wear and tear. I quickly checked to see if it was indeed the factory unlocked model and it was. Definitely satisfied with my purchase from Re-cell.

The MEID sticker reveals that this is actually model LG-G710PM, but the software and seller's ad says it is the LG-G710ULM. I believe that because this is a re-flashed phone I cannot upgrade to Android 9. The seller does not disclose that the phone is not the actual unlocked model and the upgrade software does not work, probably due to a model/MEID mismatch.

Keypad misreads finger taps all the time and AI does not fix or offers the stupidest fixes imagineable. This occurs in various social media apps, SMS, email, etc. Come on LG, expect better from you.
