Aqara Vibration Sensor for SMART washing machine/ dryer

Aqara Vibration Sensor for SMART washing machine/ dryer
Brought the Aqara vibration sensor along with an E1 hub and was able to get notifications on dryer cycle completion seamlessly! Had gone through multiple forums which talked about IFTTT automations, coding etc… but the capability is within the Aqara App itself. Just set the automation inside the Aqara app to send notification with a 5 minute delay. Vibration is measured by the sensor every minute. Once the dryer starts, the automation notification will be sent out 5 mins after the last vibration is detected! See attached picture. Note, You might get another notification when removing clothes from the dryer of course :)Easy way to convert your standard washing machine/dryer to a smart one. Got the sensor and hub for $35 during prime day sale.Update: A 10 min delay ( instead of 5 mins) to automation worked better!

Having a hub is a must in order for this to work accordingly.
I attached this vibration sensor to a set of buttons that our dog uses when he is hungry, wants to play or needs to go potty.
I attached it with Velcro to the potty button so everyone at home can get notification on our mobile phones.
It works well. Once in a while there are false notifications, but it is rare.

Disclosure that I do not use an Aqara Hub, but have this connected to Home Assistant via a ConBee II ZigBee Gateway.

(Original Post - Updated Below)
As an On/Off binary sensor, yes, these work. But as a vibration sensor, that’s a bit of a stretch. As the device sends signals back to any connected ZigBee gateway, it is the function of the sensor to report action/inaction, and thus my experience is not due to missing some feature only provided by an Aqara hub. I was hoping for a true vibration sensor, but found that it didn’t pick up on vibrations so much as reporting jarring events. For instance, when attached to the frame my truck’s engine is mounted on, turning the internal combustion engine on did not cause a vibration alert. When attached to the internal mechanics of an automatic expresso machine that grinds and packs beans – no vibration. Same with a washer, a dryer, and the floor of my old school metal mailbox. In fact, it didn’t detect vibration when attached to the front of a running machine. I got a trigger when attached to the seat of a rowing machine, and if attached to the back under belt frame of said rowing machine. Even then, what I got back was sporadic at best. For instance, in a 30 minute constant rowing machine session, it toggled between “clear” and “vibration” almost every minute. In other areas where it was a jarring event, like opening a door/cabinet, or other single big movement object – it worked fine. But nothing more subtle, and not a true vibration happening – not a vibration happening sensor.

This might possibly be a good replacement for an open/close sensor when you don’t have room to place both components, but it is not a vibration sensor.

UPDATE:
The sensitivity level can be adjusted programmatically using either Home Assistant's Developer Tools\Services utility, or the deCONZ\Phoscon API. The device has a 21 step sensitivity range, and when adjusted to more sensitive, it picks things up as expected.

Still not a 5 as you have to go through a few hoops that most users won't want to try.

Just for fun, I added one of these to my glass slider that has a window/door sensor. It always picks up the door opening and closing, no matter how slowly I do it and it will pick up a glass break, so better than the door/window switch sensors. Switching over to all vibration sensors. Can't wait for a big earthquake, phone is going to blow up with alerts.

I have purchased 9 of these sensors and after two years of usage, 5 of them have failed. Two have gone completely unresponsive and 3 keep randomly triggering with no movement. I have changed the batteries and lowered the sensitivity, so it’s not that. I use them on my windows to detect glass breaking or windows opening. I have it set up with my Aqara hub as an alarm.

Unfortunately, after a year, my alarm went off for no reason. It happened during the day, so I changed the battery and called it a day. Within weeks, it happened again, at night. As we have small children, we are already sleep deprived, so I did not appreciate the panic and lack of sleep this caused. It happened a few more times and now I have given up. This is not in any way reliable enough to be used as an alarm trigger. If this is what you’re looking for, look elsewhere. I cannot risk trying again as we don’t have the margin in our lives for that.

The sensitivity of the sensor is way too low and it requires a very strong vibration to trigger it. I have not found a good use case for this level of sensitivity as I do not want to have to bang my surfaces to trigger. I was hoping for a more discrete detection level so that I can detect normal actions…

So the product itself is cool. It’s small, easy to add to home assistant, registers vibration fairly quickly, and doesn’t bring the ere of my wife.

Actually size wise it’s very similar to the aqara temperature sensor. And if like me you break the back of it, you’ll find that the temperature sensor back fits :)

But make sure the idea you have for this is better than mine. I wanted to use it under a step of the stair case to switch on a led light strip. Super cool right? Well super fun to setup right? Well it would have been awesome except the sensor wasn’t sensitive enough to pick up me stepping on the step. The steps were wood, the sensor was underneath, and I’m around 200lbs. And no luck.

I feel that these might be more suitable for things that rattle or have a bit more shake in them. Stop thinking of weird automation for your bed!

I added this sensor to the inside of my mailbox so I can be alerted when the mail is delivered. There are a lot of applications to be notified when there is vibration. Great product.

Got this to add to my Home Assistant setup, for detecting shaking from my washing machine. I had to set it to high sensitivity to react to small vibrations but it works. Do not forget to change the time for the reset of the vibration sensor for continuous vibrations such as a washer.

Works perfectly with my sonoff zigbee stick, instantly paired after holding the button on the small sensor. I really just expected this to be a vibration sensor and that's it, but oh my, it is a Temperature sensor too!

This small guy reports Temperature, Vibration, Motion and the Angle it is at!? This is a great little device to have around!

I am using Zigbee2mqtt with mosquitto and HomeAssistant, and as soon as Z2M picked it up the entity was visible in HomeAssistant with all sensors reporting almost immediately. Why almost you ask? Temperature and Battery took a little while to come through as it only reports every 5 minutes or so.

Overall I am very satisfied with it, the only small thing is the packaging, its oversized for such a small device, lots of paper waste. But otherwise works wonderfully and will certainly buy more in the long run!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal para proteger una luna de cristal grande
Reviewed in Spain on July 2, 2023
