We purchased this as a Christmas gift for my 7 year old. He loves it and can voice message grandparents and any other family members we accept on the kidibuzz app. The kidibuzz app stopped working off and on which was frustrating too. An error message came up quite often. There are games and kid appropriate learning videos etc.He barely dropped it and screen cracked. Now he cant use any of the apps that are on the upper half of the crack. The alarm is on and we can not cancel it because that button is above the crack. It would be nice if there was a screen protector. It is very heavy so when it barely drops it can really cause some damage. I wish there was a way to fix this because he really loves it and we like being able to communicate safely with him when we are away.
I can’t say enough wonderful things about this device. I love that it looks like a phone but isn’t. Kids can play games and take pics, videos, and text approved friends! It’s easy to use once you get used to going through the parental portal to add games and so on. I know what my kids are doing and that gives me peace of mind. Recommend for your child that isn’t quite ready for an actual phone. My kids are 7 and 8 and they love it!!

My daugher loved receiving this "real" phone as a bday gift! It has options to text approved family members, and she can even send voice messages, pictures and videos. She loves the face filter app (like Snapchat), and she can also send those pics to her approved text list. The games are educational, fun and plentiful (with the option to either purchase more or connect to the internet to download from outside sources). They take a little while to initially install/download, but she could use other features of the phone while it was charging and updating everything else. It is not quite as quick as a real phone, but it is the perfect speed for a young child. It has time limit controls for parents, which is very appreciated. This was the perfect gift for my 5yo!
These are basically super low-end Android tablets. I'm a fan of Android but these are absolute garbage. The OS is all VTech. If you know anything about VTech, they are an absolute privacy and technology disaster. These were purchased for Christmas before we bought iPads for school. Needless to say, these will probably never be touched. You're mostly locked in to vtech apps unless you do a little searching to get the Android app store installed. The problem is that the digitizer on the ones we bought are so bad that the right side of the keyboard is nearly unusable. You MUST register these devices before you can really do anything useful with them and this means you hand over your information to VTech who are notoriously lax when it comes to protecting your information. Here's an example: If you had an internet-connected device of theirs that took pictures, all your data was stored in a completely unsecure website with no security whatsoever. All of your photos were there for anyone with a little skill to access. I'm sure they haven't learned their lesson especially since the registration feature was down for at least a week right after Christmas. These are way past the return date since we bought them early on so we're stuck with them.
As several have indicated, the VTech KidiBuzz G2 is larger than a standard phone, which is fine (depending on your expectations. It has all the cues of a phone - rectangular, with a stylized border, and a swivel-able camera at the the top of the screen - which is what my little guy wanted.
The screen has a "washed" quality, and as you interact with the camera, the processor, and inspect the "tech specs" of the device, it becomes clear that what the company has done here is to take either previous generation components or inferior components and products a product meant to provide a "smart device" like experience to children. (To be fair, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It makes sense. But it also makes pricing the device properly a difficult exercise.)
As I mentioned, the screen has "washed" quality to it, the processor is slow, it only has 8gbs onboard and the camera requires "absolute stillness!" to produce a decent image.
Those are the cons. The pros include a thoughtful library of games and utilities, a "talk to you" function that acts as a bridge for children who aren't yet reading at velocity, and a super cool option of "text mom and dad."
I'm super judgmental. I see all the deficits. My son is absolutely OVER THE MOON about this thing. He LOVES it, so I'm like "hey...you like it? I like it. Period."
At $100, like that red and white circular logo-ed place wants to get for this thing if you buy it in store, I'm not sure this is properly valued. The device is likely "worth" somewhere between 50 and 70, and at $100 the entire paid library should be included for the life of the device.
So in summary, I'm like "meh" (with a question mark) and my little guy is like "whoa!" and that equals three stars.
I bought this for my 6 y/o grandson for Christmas. He loves it and calls it his "phone". He throughly enjoys being able to text all of us when he is connected to wifi. His mom loves being able to control who he talks with and what he looks up! He enjoys the games and the learning games too. The camera & photos are not the same as our cellphones, but it doesn't make a difference to him. He has so much fun with it. We have downloaded music he likes to it and he dances & sings while it plays. I think it's perfect for his very first experience with his own "phone".
Overall I'm very pleased with it and bought it for a great price. We also purchased a carrying case to help his protect it. It will be a great learning experience as well as learning while he plays on downloaded skills games. I'm going to buy one for our second grandson as soon as he is old enough to work it.
