“So many twists and turns. So many idiots in space. I felt right at home.” - Goodreads review.
One last job before retirement. How hard can it be?
The Colonial War ends in one hour. For gunrunner Isabel Rocarion it's just enough time to collect her last payment before the client — leaders of the Colonial resistance — lose their money and freedom.
Call her a smuggler, and you’ll lose a tooth. Touch her chameleon-monkey, and you’ll lose even more. Isabel takes nonsense from no one. She’s planning her retirement in the comfort of the peaceful Procyon. She will get what she wants, no matter the cost.
But Procyon isn’t cheap, so when the fattest paycheck in Isabel’s life falls into her lap, she doesn’t hesitate to accept the job attached. There's only one catch: the gunrunner must turn into the smuggler of the last remnant of the Colonial resistance.
Climb aboard the Anvil for the space adventure of a lifetime with a feisty female protagonist and her cute-but-capable chamonkey sidekick. Meet the military from both sides of civil war and take the first step into finding the fabled world of Libertalia.

If you like twists with agents, double agents, triple agents? then you'll like this story line, too.
The technology in the book gave me a little feeling of Gibson's Neuromancer but Michael balances it so it doesn't take over the story but is used by the characters who are the story. I like that about Sci Fi books that manage to avoid the problem of the tech being too over the top that everything is solved by it. In the end, humans and their flaws and strengths make the story.
The book doesn't end on a "cliff hanger" so much as a natural transition point which I appreciate. Some authors leave you hanging, this one wraps up enough of the action to feel like a good story. It is the first half of a story line so you'll want the next one as well to finish it. I will be getting the next book as soon as it's available.
I was a beta reader for, and received an ARC of, this story for review purposes. The author requested a review, but made no conditions for it. I am writing this review based solely on my enjoyment of this story in particular, and the author's writing overall. I have followed Mr. Penmore's work for just over a year as of this entry, and have enjoyed watching the evolution of his skill and creativity.
Which side are you on? Are you a Gunrunner, Smuggler, or Admrial? Where do your loyalties lay? Who are your friends or foe? Where are you "safe" enough to enjoy a simple life and do you have enough credits? These are just a few of the questions you will have to figure out once you get your ship out of captivity. A page turnning story with a turn around every corner. I whole-heartedly recommend this latest adventure cooked up by Michael Penmore. He keeps getting better with every story he publishes.

I was hooked from start to finish it makes you want to go right now and get book so you can carry on with the adventure

Just by the author’s description of the protagonist at the beginning of the book, I fell in love with her, and I knew I’d love this story. She has attitude!
In a galaxy where a
technocratic oligarchy from Earth rules and dominates, the Colonial planets rise up, creating a resistance, with a Colonial Congress, the voice of the oppressed. Isabel is a gunrunner, an independent, with no affiliation, forced in a situation against her will. So commences an intrepid adventure, space fights, running from the enemy, with a cute and unique pet. Heart warming words of John Amicon, a member of the Colonial Congress. I wish we had more people like him in our governments. Fast paced, action packed, with great doses of humour, enigmatic and fun characters, suspicious alliances.. it has been a wonderful ride! I was glued to the book from the start. Looking forward to reading Fall of Libertalia #2!
