If you've read Michael's Sigma books already, this book will start to fill in background that is missing. And in doing so, it gives you not only a good story line but a character that stands out with both attitude and style. In a universe where technology can make you stand out, Isabel is distinctive in her shades and leather coat. Though this is also part of her flaws, as going in disguise she still has a presence that stands out. Her motivations are also complex and just saying "gunrunner with a heart of gold" is too simple a description. She's very opportunistic and at the same time can't stand to see innocents harmed. Which kind of puts a kink in her attempt to appear cold and calculating. The book also fills in a lot of background on two characters you meet in Sigma so it gave a number of chuckles as you find out where they came from.
If you like twists with agents, double agents, triple agents? then you'll like this story line, too.
The technology in the book gave me a little feeling of Gibson's Neuromancer but Michael balances it so it doesn't take over the story but is used by the characters who are the story. I like that about Sci Fi books that manage to avoid the problem of the tech being too over the top that everything is solved by it. In the end, humans and their flaws and strengths make the story.
The book doesn't end on a "cliff hanger" so much as a natural transition point which I appreciate. Some authors leave you hanging, this one wraps up enough of the action to feel like a good story. It is the first half of a story line so you'll want the next one as well to finish it. I will be getting the next book as soon as it's available.
