First, I really liked this book because the author seems to have upped his humor and managed to make the action and storyline dramatic at the same time.
There's a great chapter where you get inside Leon, the Chamonkey, point of view and we get to know him better.
The previous book with Isabel had Rhys portrayed in a way that was inconsistent with the Rhys in the Sigma Protocol books and this book closes that gap giving some understanding to what he went through, the PTSD, the real mental messing that took time to get over and heal from. I also saw Nadie in a similar way in the previous book, and this one makes the connections as well. The characters really seem to find the paths to their better selves by the end of this book so that by Sigma Protocol, they're more complete personalities that you can see develop into the people we recognize in the Sigma Protocol books.
There are also new antagonists explained that I feel will become important with book #4 of Sigma Protocol. Looking forward to how that story unfolds now.
Other reviewers mention the Russians. They were a real laugh. Interesting plot twist with their radioactive booze, and fun to watch the interactions. You get the impression that Isabel sometimes does things that seem random just because she has a wicked sense of humor. And a very low inhibition that could stop her from doing something that would make her laugh. I found those chapters helped flesh out Isabel's character a little.
Because of the mix of humor, I found this book easy to read and the story line and drama made it satisfying too.
Isabel Rocarion. What a character. Both literally and figuratively. I am an unashamed fan of reading the stories of strong women. She has one of the highest levels of confidence I have seen in any character in quite a while. She knows what she wants and isn't afraid to make someone cry to get it. There's only one person so far (aside from her hybrid chameleon-monkey, Leon) that is in her good graces, and Isabel is just fine with that. Anyone else is nothing more than a tool or an obstacle to her final goal in life: A sweet retirement to a paradise colony world where she can live out her days in comfort and leisure.
There's just one problem getting in her way of achieving that goal... The Universe as a whole. If it isn't the rebellious Colonial Government strong-arming her to do one last task for them before they surrender to Earth Forces, then it's a crew of possibly delusional Russian cosmonauts trying to poison her with homebrew vodka. Add to that, an ultra-secret organization that has agendas of its own, and nobody had better get in its way. And yet, that's not every obstacle she has to face. To say anything more would ruin any surprise plot twists Mr. Penmore has in store for his readers, but I will say this. If you ain't expecting it, then that's what will probably happen.
I have to confess some bias here. I have been a fan of Michael Penmore's work since his debut story, Prox Doom. I have seen his style as an author evolve and I like where is he going. I heartily recommend this story, and his other stories as well, to anyone who likes to read stories with humor, intelligence, lunacy, and lots of character development. I challenge you to not fall in love with at least one of the cast of characters.
The chamonkey, Leon, a cross between a chameleon and a monkey, is an inter-dimensional being with strange powers that become more apparent as things move along. He has a connection to Isabel that was initiated when he bit Isabel.
Pirates and spies and a ship that was made from the Russian portion of the ISS are also part and parcel of this tale. The Russian ship is crewed by three Russian wackos.
It all comes to a head on the planet Libertalia where a sapient virus is being incubated and studied. A strange green woman show up to make things even more complicated, coming and going as well as somehow appearing as a green cloud.
Don’t worry, it gets even more interesting and the mix of people, good and bad, gets stirred and mixed by events. And then there are two nitwit clowns, Ramsey and Moon, who probably couldn’t pour water or something out of a boot if the instructions were printed on the heel.
All of this makes for a fast-paced story that will keep you turning pages wondering what twist will happen to make this story even more interesting. And it will leave you wanting more of Isabel and her chamonkey Leon.
