Great start for the young, honor hungry hero.

This story is not the typical weakling overcoming the school yard bully. Jace is a young man that has a physical ailment that he constantly struggles with just to make himself try to do the simple tasks his peers do everyday. His whole life seems to be a mystery as he attempts to understand how his family had become dishonored and exiled. His very weakness enables him to become the hero the world does not quite know it needs. The challenge will be overcoming the traps, schemes, and dark alliances his adversaries both apparent and concealed have in store for his journey to completion. I, for one, am looking forward to the next chapters of the story to be unveiled.

There are some grammatical errors (spelling and punctuation), so I hope the editors catch more of them in the next book. There were not so many that it caused me to lose focus and continue with the story; therefore, I still gave it a five star rating since it is the first in the series.

Wow. Just wow. Through every part of this story, I found myself wanting to read until my eyes gave out. Whenever I had the chance, this book was in my mind. Such a beautiful story. Can’t wait to read on!

Good wuxia setting, lacking on other areas.

It’s an interesting wuxia cultivation setting, set an an alt-earth. The negative is a whiny MC. For some who allegedly grew up in the stories equivalent of slums, he is constantly prattling on about fairness and honor. Only to cheat and steal in the name of fairness and honor. It’s like the terms mean what he needs then to mean from moment to moment.

And the motivations and decision making of other characters seem incredibly dense.

Still, the setting is good.

Unique And Quite Immersive

Determined to restore his family's honor, Jace Warin throws himself head-first into a decision that will change his life, and that of his family, forever. He manages to garner himself entry into the exclusive School of Swords and Serpents, never once imagining how much he'll have to prove himself worthy of the decision he's made when the time comes. To make matters worse, his core is broken. In his mind, if he can heal himself, he'll be able to obtain an end to his means. First, however, he'll need to outsmart those who are determined in pushing him to the bottom at every turn.

A lovely start to the School Of Swords And Serpents series, Hollow Core immerses the reader in Jace's complicated story. This is a young man who's lived with his family's dishonor from the moment he'd been born. He'll do anything to fix all wrongs committed against him and his family. Granted, he needs to remain one step ahead of those hounding his steps at every turn.

Gage Lee incorporates martial arts lore with fantasy elements that strengthens the core of the story he's wound together. This is a story that begs the reader to dive into it further. It pushes us to discover more of Jace's plight, which they learn about more of the complex, and at times, chaotic world he lives in. The author definitely sets the stage for what's coming next. I so can't wait to discover more of this unique world.

Oh my, this is so good

I read the blurb. Mortal Kombat meets Harry Potter. Well, this was a lot more exciting than Harry Potter. I was warned that I wouldn't be able to put it down. It's 2 am. Still enough time for some sleep before work tomorrow. I loved the detail in the combats. How the MC moved his energy. The combats and other energy things were just enough and not any more. The same went for the story telling. It was simple enough to make reading effortless. I would have liked just a bit more description of his friends. This definitely was a book where I hit the end and went Wow! I hope that I have conveyed enough to validate my enthusiastic recommendation of the book. I consider this on par and maybe a smidge better than Rogue Dungeon, another Shadow Alley press book that is on my read this first list. Ok, I'll read the next Cradle first but this was darn close. I hope the next one of these fulfills what this one promised.

An Interesting Juxtaposition

This book was an enjoyable read. The main character is scrappy, tenacious, and everything that you expect from a cultivation hero, working from behind to grow in strength.

However, some parts of it didn't jive for me. It was a school, yet the teachers were only secretly against the MC? There was a big conspiracy that the MC wasn't a part of, but was directly affecting?

It's only when he is apparently to be 'dealt with' that someone actually explains to him WHAT was going on. This was a little jarring and made no sense.

A little more world building would have been good, as well, perhaps giving the MC some allies as well. There is a split between Empyreals and campers, but it's never clear why.

In the end, the book is good, the story engaging, the MC is likeable. The mythos is engaging and makes me want to know more as well.

A very good first offering and I'm keen for more.

Interesting world and good character development

I received an advance copy for an honest review.

I enjoyed the story quite a lot! The main character is well developed, and the world building is interesting. The school really pulls off the Hogwarts for cultivators vibe that I was wanting after the description.

The only thing I was missing was a little more about how the world got to be where it is. I didn't knock off any stars because I suspect it's intentional to build up to it, and make you more interested! (Which it did)

Overall, a good read and worth your time (and money)
