About this item

  • Flamingo+ FM (Flamingo FM v2) is a high attenuation bandstop filter designed to stop very strong broadcast FM transmissions from causing overload and other issues with your radio or SDR
  • The attenuation level of this filter is much higher than Flamingo FM v1 (>60dB typical avg. & >70dB typical max attenuation). We recommend this filter for urban environments and other locations with high-wattage FM transmitters nearby. For other locations, Flamingo FM v1 is a better option
  • Flamingo+ FM has a higher attenuation than other similar commercial filters, while also have a lower insertion losses outside of the stop band (<0.25dB avg.) and less of an effect on the adjacent VHF airband of 108MHz-137MHz (8dB avg. attenuation vs 16dB avg. of similar filters)
  • Designed and manufactured by Nooelec in North America, with a full 2-year product warranty

I've got two Nooelec SDR dongles that I use for ADS-B and UAT. I was looking for an LNA, and I ordered both this and the Lana LNA. I received this a few days before the LNA however, and decided "why not plug it in now."I am not super sure how the local FM stations can be causing so much interference to my SDRs when receiving ADS-B (1090mhz), but after plugging this in, I am seeing 3-5 times the positions reported when compared with just the SDRs.I installed the filter at 3PM on 2/12. Since then, I had over double the positions reported on the 12th, and around four times of my "normal" 20k positions today on the 13th (see the attached picture). I also noticed my peak message rate, prior to sending it to FR24/FA went from ~40msgs/sec at peak, to over 200!

I'm in the middle of the city, with a big mountain in front of me where all the city antennas are located, so all my reception includes some sort of comercial band FM interference, but with this filter I'm able to mitigate the problem, no at 100% because I have a radio station 3 blocks away, but with the rest of the RF spectrum works very well

I really recommend connect this filter next to your SDR hardware using the connector included, I connected mine using a 20 cm cable with SMA Male to Male connectors and is more than enough to inyect FM interference again in the line, I was about to ask for a refund but it was my fault at first place

The "Flamingo FM Filter version 2" works very well for suppressing FM station interference with TV reception. It does a better job than the only readily available 75 ohm FM filter from Channel Master. Flamingo provides >70 dB supression across the entire FM band, 15-20 dB more suppression above 91 Mhz and as much as 35 dB 88-91 Mhz. Adapters are required to connect 75 ohm coax using F connectors to the Flamingo 50 ohm SMA connectors but they can be found on Amazon (search for "ASIN B00CVTRTUC"). Theoretically, the mismatch between the 75 ohm TV cable/hardware and the 50 ohm Flamingo should impact desired signal levels but in practice the loss is negligible. I am bedeviled by a 47 KW 90.1 Mhz FM station 2 miles from my home and the extra 20+ dB of attenuation provided by the Flamingo is enough for me to receive my problem Vhf station 38 miles away.

I have a Uniden SDS 100 and 200 with a Discone antenna 30 feet above my house. I do not live in a city but I am near one. Receiver desensitivity is a insidious issue as you cannot tell it is happening. I have some other notch filters and FM broadcast will still blast thru (I’m looking at you Jim M75!) But this filter completely filters them out. Now my scanners pick many more weak signals and Air works perfectly. I highly recommend this filter and it has good build quality too.

Theres an fm broadcast tower maybe 10 miles from me and I cannot see the signal at all with the filter on. The filtering is always on, but the lna can be turned on or off by applying or removing power. If you plan on powering it via usb instead of biastee you may need a dc block. I know I needed one for my RTLSDR V3.

Only gripe I have is the silkscreening is already almost completely gone after about a month and a half of use. Its only cosmetic so I didnt feel the need to dock the review

The Nooelec NESDR FM bandstop v2 is a good notch filter, but compared to the RTL-SDR FM bandstop in my area it just does not filter out some of the strong FM signals. Several strong FM stations are not filtered out in the upper 100+ MHz frequencies and this impacts the reception of aviation frequencies I am trying to listen to. Below the 100 MHz frequencies it does the same job as the RTl-SDR FM bandstop. It is still a good bandstop just get both to see which is better in your area first.

I got this because I was seeing a lot of harmonic interference from FM radio when scanning with my SDR. I'd scan and see some weird signal in the higher frequencies, so I'd tune to it and... hey, it's a harmonic of one of the strong broadcast stations. I'm pretty far from the towers so I really wouldn't have thought I'd need this, but apparently so.

The harmonics are definitely diminished, and the original frequencies are still somewhat tunable, although I'm not normally using my SDR to listen to FM radio. I've been able to tune into some broadcasts that were being drowned out before, so I'm pretty happy about it.

No technical measurements really, just anecdotal. I really should do a before/after where I'm on a frequency with strong interference, then add this filter in and see how much it attenuates. I may do that later and then update with some actual #'s. But otherwise, I'm pretty happy with this.
