My review on this phone is the following:
1. Screen:
The 120Hz are just another level, it's glorious! However, the colors on the screen are not that great, like you will notice it if you come from a Samsung phone that the overall quality is not the best, but it's TOTALLY worth it to have those 120Hz.
2. Performance:
The best performing phone I've seen. Opens every app in a blink of an eye, actually even faster haha. Once I started a game and loaded it from the multitasking menu 2 days later and it was still on the same spot. It's just excellent.
3. Battery life:
I could easily get 2 days of regular use with the 120Hz on. No problem at all. If you play a lot it's 1 day of use. Trust me when I say it's hard to kill this phone. Charging the phone was quick, 2 hours and it's full. 2 hours don't seem to be fast but consider this is a 6000mAh.
4. Look & Feel:
I had to think about buying this phone because it looks very agressive on photos, but on real life it look nice. If you put a case on it, it will still look giant, bulky and agressive but it's not that much. I do preffer a look a little bit more simple, like the Oneplus 7 Pro, but this is what you get with this one.
It feels heavy in the hand, it's not a light phone but you have to know that to have 6000mAh and such an overpowered phone has some weight.
5. Cameras:
They are decent, you won't get flagship quality photos here but the photos are decent. I downloaded the Google Camera APK for this phone and the photos looked much better but the app was buggy, I couldn't get the ultra-wide angle camera to work, the 48MP camera was VERY laggy on this app, so my advice is to keep using the stock camera app where everything works seemlessly.
6. Audio.
FANTASTIC. The best speakers on any smartphone. Period. They are loud, but that is not surprising, the surprising part is how CLEAR they sound. There is no distortion at ANY level. Super GREAT audio quality.
I compared it to my wife's iPhone Xs Max and the iPhone is a joke next to the ROG.
7. Gaming
Everything is very accurate, thanks to the 120hz display and the amazing 240Hz touch response. I played a couple matches of COD Mobile and I was always on first place. And this is with no accesories, this was only touching the screen.
8. Software updates:
This is where ASUS needs to improve. I know the ROG Phone 1 is still stuck in Oreo so I think this ROG Phone 2 will be stuck in Pie for a long time too. Their update program is crap. But this is something that can easily improve and might be fixed by the time you're reading this. This doesn't really affect the phone itself but in the long run it might be a problem and more for those like me who likes to be up to date.
To wrap it up, but it. You won't regret it. This is a fantastic phone. For the money you can get something else. You can even buy an iPhone 11 Pro for $100 more but to be honest, this phone is an unique experience. It's great! I'm sad I had to return it and yes, I did not asked for a replacement because I do think that $946 for this phone is a bit too much. I will buy a phone that can be updated to Android 10 because I really miss the Dark Mode, but if having fast updates is not a priority and you read this review until now, this phone is for you.
I am using Google Fi and it is working spectacular. This ROG 2 is replacing a Pixel (1st Gen) which I loved...this phone however is amazing in comparison. The shear power, speed and silky smoothness is impressive and the battery is exactly what I needed.
Pros:
Fast, powerful and smooth
Great sound (probably the best I've ever heard from a phone)
Very good camera, not the best but it beats out other flagship phones for sure
Battery life is amazing (still at 74% at the end of the day)
Charging speed - Pixel (3 hrs from 5% to 100%) / ROG 2 (20 mins from 30% to 85%)
Bright screen (it doesn't go very low however)
Very nice almost stock Android OS (Asus only changed where it was needed to allow you to control advanced aspect of performance)
Great customization
Best phone for gaming
The 12GB RAM makes a huge difference (apps can be cached and will launch without reloading...no other phone allows that not even the iPhone11)
Dual SIM option is nice, especially for traveling
Cons:
There were some issues with the messenger app on first launch (software updates corrected the issue)
The screen is large, reaching the top corner to close apps is challenging and I have large hands and long fingers
Stock keyboard was glitchy (Gboard works great)
Some apps are buggy and will freeze for a moment (Kodi will not run at all)
No expandable memory, but you should be good with the onboard 512GB
Compared to my Pixel this phone is so much faster, not only in app launching, multi tasking, and bootup but it also gets much faster wifi speeds. As I mentioned even my mobile connection is noticably more stable and much faster.
For the numbers people out there:
Home wifi on mesh network with GB connection - Pixel (67 Mbps) / ROG 2 (98 Mbps)
Google Fi mobile data in WA - Pixel avg 3 out of 4 bars (28 Mbps) / ROG 2 avg 4 of 4 bars (62 Mbps)
Battery drain starting at 5:30 AM (Waze nav avg 75 min daily, location, wifi and Max screen res/brightness) - Pixel required charging by 2 PM / ROG 2 still at 72% at 10:30 PM
I cannot say enough about this phone...by far the best phone I've owned. Once the OS is updated with Android 10 it will be even more untouchable.
