I read this book, not in my usual genre of non-fiction, because it is based in Kansas

I didn't expect to like this book. I'm more into the non-fiction genre. I enjoyed it though, not only because of the familiar towns in Western Kansas (I live in Eastern Kansas, Franklin County and was born in Overland Park). Sheriff/Deputy Pete, although only in his 40s, reminds me of my grandpa S. who was a deputy in Missouri. At 5'1" and in his 70s, thugs thought he was just a scrawny, old deputy past his prime. He was tough as nails and could get the best of them every time!

Andrew Allan has considerable talent at storytelling (I'll bet he's a genius at infomercials!); his "Walt" books mix subtle humor with slapstick comedy and meld clever challenges with suprising solutions. So it is to be expected that his "Sheriff" book(s)–oops! Guess I slipped and let the cat outta the bag!–have an undercurrent of antics bordering on ridiculous (both the bad guys and the "hero" sheriff often do unlikely things); impossible challenges (such as remaining in office when the town mayor and newspaper publisher provoke the entire town to despise him and demand that he get outta town!) and a history that forces him to perserve.

But wait, there's more! Seriously, there is some _serious_ background and local color, both of the area and of facts and tidbits of indigenous people of the southwestern U.S. Allan gives us a yarn that calls to mind Mark Reps or the lamented Tony Hillerman with humor as its lifeblood.

It gripped me from the very first page until the very last page. A very intricate, intense and complex plot with a town full of a lot of interesting characters. It is truly amazing how a small towns can be bought without anyone being the wiser when there is a lot of money involved. But will there be a book number two with Sheriff Pete? I sure hope so, because I would definitely get the next one. An awesome read and well worth the price.

Great characters with a two-fold twisted who-dunnit. Pete is a troubled sheriff who has a few mysteries to solve. Who was killing people and why? Who killed his father and why? Where is a kidnapped young girl? Was she even still alive? An interesting twist of people, twisted motives and interactions. One mystery does not get solved. I'll read the second book to see if it does!!
