Much More Than Meets the Eye!
For about 10 years our home has had its routing and WiFi services handled by Apple routers, they worked well and provided good speed and coverage. However the number of devices in our home finally exceeded the Apple’s DHCP reservation limit, and I wanted a product with better management capabilities. I looked a long time for a replacement, trying the major brands, and ended up sending them all back.Enter Ubiquiti Networks, it’s Unifi product line, and it’s centerpiece “Controller” management software. This last piece is the key here, if you want to put together a well managed network, which in turn delivers higher performance and better security, you must first choose a device to host the Controller software. That’s right, the Controller isn’t a piece of hardware, but rather software that can reside on a variety of devices including: Windows, macOS, and Linux machines, dedicated Unifi products, or multi-purpose products like the Unifi Dream Machine reviewed here. The Unifi Dream Machine is on the surface a fairly typical WiFi router like you might find in a home or small to medium size office. In an attractive smooth white cylinder (with a halo ring of light) it includes a WiFi Access Point, four port gigabit switch, gigabit WAN port, DHCP Server, NAT Firewall, other typical router features, and the afore mentioned Controller software. However, if I haven’t made it clear, the Controller puts the Dream Machine in another class from most other WiFi routers. The Controller sees and displays everything going across your network, and does it in a (mostly) intuitive way that is easy to learn. DHCP reservations are handled in a very unique way, and one that allows you to display and sort your reservations any way you’d like, which for me is usually by IP Address (surprisingly virtually no other popular router lets you do this). All of the devices on your network become objects you can identify (with appropriate icons), label (with identifiable names), and address (with logical schemes); then as mentioned you can display them in a report type format that makes it easy to see what you have, what it’s doing, and what might not belong or is misconfigured. The Controller supports many more features than I can go into here, typical ones like VLANs, QoS, DNS, etc; and unusual ones like dashboard performance monitor on both a high level and granular view. The Unifi product line also includes a myriad of related network products which can also be managed by the Controller; I have replaced all my network switches, and added two additional Unifi (outdoor) Access Points to cover major portions of my large property. The amount of control and detail available is superb! So, why not 5 stars? In 2013 Apple introduced the AirPort Extreme Base Station with AC/WiFi 5 and 3x3 MIMO, the 2019 Dream Machine’s WiFi performance is only marginally better, still AC but with added Wave 2 and MiMo 4x4. It’s only fair that these days we should expect AX/WiFi 6. Also, in testing other routers I’ve found the WAN information more comprehensive with some brands (ASUS comes to mind); however, this is a software feature one would expect the Controller to improve. All in all for me the comprehensive management of the Controller overcomes the slight limitations these impose (a hardcore gamer might need AX).These minor limitations aside I fully recommend the Unifi Dream Machine and it’s comprehensive Controller software, a great buy!

I will update this review if there are problems later on...
I bought this router after being disenchanted with a series of consumer-grade wireless routers. They all worked fine - for the first several months. I last used a Netgear 6400v2 and have an attached USB-3 drive which I used for backups of my computers and to store media files for my Plex server. Then, like all it's predecessors, it started disconnecting from the internet and not even letting me log in to the router. The attached drive became unreachable at times. These problems were separate and unpredictable. I got sick of my wife calling me to tell me that there was no internet.

Ubiquiti makes enterprise-grade networking devices. They have really just entered the consumer (or "prosumer") market with the Dream Machine. I had high hopes for this and have been really happy with the setup and deployment so far. The wireless access point is strong enough to not need any satellite access points in my house. All my devices are getting strong wireless signals. I converted my old router to a switch, and now use it just to connect the network drive to the LAN. It seems to be up for that task so far - saving me the expense of a NAS device.

The configuration controller program is very flexible and secure. You can turn on 2-factor authentication (via Google authenticator on your phone) which will lock out anyone trying to access the network controller even if they know the password. It works fine in it's default setting, but allows you to make many customizations including combining the 2.4 and 5 Ghz wireless networks into a single SSID. This allows new and old wireless clients to talk on the same network.

At Ubiquiti's advice, I bought a good power conditioner to protect my networking equipment from voltage irregularities (Furman PST-8D) , and also lightning shielded the lot of it with L-Com grounded surge protectors.

Edit June 27, 2020:
It's still all good. ZERO down time. I have never needed to reset it. It maintains consistent connections with wired and wireless clients. Easy to assign fixed IP addresses and port forwarding. This thing is like a toaster - it just does what it is supposed to do without needing any hand-holding. Don't hesitate to buy it.

I've been using this as a residential router with three Ubiquiti APs for the past one year. From the moment I plugged it in it has been perfect and rock-solid. It takes a while to learn all the options and settings, but once you have it configured the way you want it you don't have to pay attention to it. Throughput, stability, great features, intuitive UI, I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a home or small office router in the Ubiquiti ecosystem. I'm not sure what's going on with some of the bad reviews I see on Amazon, that has definitely not been my experience. If you're an IT professional and complaining that this device doesn't have all the bells and whistles, you're right and you purchased the wrong router. This is a prosumer device intended for IT hobbyists and enthusiasts. If you demand that your networking product do everything, and that the software be perfect from the first release, you should be prepared to spend much more money. The folks buying this product will be using it for work-from-home, Zoom calls, streaming, and maybe a few custom settings for their LAN.

I have been battling wifi issues for years, with my old wrt1900acs, it was good but never great. As more and more were added the router seemed to choke, and every device would be connected but not able to access the internet. I bought and returned 2 other wireless systems that failed to perform before the Dream Machine. The first was a $450 netgear orbi mesh system that promised huge coverage and high speeds, it did neither the second was a newer Linksys that somehow had worse range than the old wrt I had.

After reading reviews online saying the UDM was the ultimate and overkill for home users I figured it was worth a try, and simply put I have great speeds and coverage that is well beyond anything I have had before. I have always had a bit of a bias against routers that do not have external antennas and expected this one to be a letdown for coverage when the two previous Linksys devices had huge antennas and couldnt get the job done. I was way off. The UDM went well above and beyond my expectations. It is overkill for a home environment unless you really like seeing absolutely everything that is going on, what devices are doing the most, and what they are connecting to, it gives a deep dive. However, its setup is simpler than what I had to deal with on either the new Netgear or Linksys routers I tried. After that it is up to you how much you want to dig in. In the age of covid with people and kids at home all the time using internet for work, school, data caps, ect. this router is a very handy tool in managing a home network. In the 3 weeks I have been using it, it has continually surprised me on how well it performs, and new features I have found.
