To Good to be True
This instrument is well made, suprsingly well made given the ridciliously low price you pay for it. Here are the things I had to do to make it perfects.1. Shim the pickups to get them to start a higher point, they were way to low from the factory.2. Reseat the grounding wire under the bridge, it wasn't all the way out.Other than that a basic setup was all that was needed to make it play like a dream. Its action is currently at 4/64 no fretbuzz what so ever. I didn't even need to adjust the truss rod. I recommend this a great project/practise bass.

I bought this bass as a donor for a P/J bass project I'm working on. After being bowled over by the prices of finished bodies (some are more than 300 bucks), I figured I couldn't miss with this COMPLETE P-style bass for only sixty bucks and change.

It was a pleasant surprise when it arrived. Shipping was quick. The bass arrived barely protected.... it was in a foam bag and the only protection was some Styrofoam blocks in a shaped cardboard box. To be fair, it arrived completely undamaged. The setup is off- WAY off- but it only took a few minutes to get the intonation and string action dialed in.

The neck is maple and is straight. It didn't need the truss rod adjusted. Finish is clear satin and nicely applied. The fretboard is a pretty nice piece of what looks like bare rosewood. I will apply lemon oil to this one.... S.O.P. for rosewood. Frets are all installed well and polished properly, although the ends protrude slightly and could use a final filing and polish. The body is VERY light, most probably basswood or poplar. The bass does balance, but it's a near thing. It's only a breath away from being neck-heavy. The body finish is well applied and glossy.

Hardware is a little lightweight and cheap looking, but to give credit where it's due, the chrome plating is heavy and shiny. Bridge is easy to adjust, and the tuning machines are fairly smooth and accurate. Bridge and tuners both seem stable. I applied a little lithium grease to the tuner gears; smoothness was improved.

After plugging it in and tuning it, I played some scales on it. It sounds okay! Not as rich and deep as an actual Precision, but good nevertheless. There were no buzzes or dead spots anywhere on the fretboard.

The pots are very slightly notchy, but turn without any scratchy noises. Tonal range is good and if there's any 60-cycle hum, it wasn't apparent at the volume I was using. The split pickup is supposed to prevent 60-cycle hum anyway.

If you do want to improve the tone, there are plenty of wiring kits available using CTS pots (BEST!!) and Alpha pots (good), right here on Amazon. I recommend the TAOT P-bass kit if you choose to go this way. It includes fabric-insulated "pushback" wire, CTS pots, Orange Drop capacitor, and a Switchcraft jack, all for about $13-$14. This simple, cheap mod alone will awaken the tone and sound quality of any entry-level instrument. You will have to get new knobs too, again a cheap mod.

Further, for this price, you can certainly afford to buy a genuine Fender or aftermarket pickup. Like with wiring kits, Amazon offers some amazingly good-sounding pickups for short bucks. However, this bass sounds more than good enough for learning, practice, and light gigging/jamming. I'm going to use it as-is for some practice until I gather the parts to complete converting it.

For a practice or beginner instrument, I have to recommend this enthusiastically. It needs a little work, but it plays well and sounds quite good. Frankly, I have no idea how they can offer this bass at this price point. Buy one before someone changes their mind!!

Wow, for such a low price, totally worth it! Most of my basses are in the $600-$900 price range. I always like to have a bass that I don't mind sweating on, leaving out to rust, get greasy hot cheeto fingers all over, etc. I wanted a bass that I could do that with, but still be functional enough to be "good" and not complete poop. This bass has blown my mind!! Wow! Obviously it is a cheap bass; but for the price, holy cow, it is really good! Playing it through my Ampeg 610HLF and it blows my mind! Yes, it is shipped horribly, with crappy strings, bad intonation, but with a quick 10-minute bass spa service, my bass sounds almost as good as my Fender basses! If you need a cheap bass, that sounds good, get this one! I might even play it at gigs because it sounds so decent! Again, materials might not be the best and maybe it came with a few dents, but it is awesome. Get it for fun if you are a gigging bassist!

I just needed a bass to lay down the bass tracks for some home recording. This bass does great. Just a few issues I had to deal with, but no problem for me because I adjust/repair/maintain all my stringed instruments. Here's how it came, and the adjustments I made:

    1. Overall - looks great, no dings, dents, or scratches. Finish looks good (I chose the natural finish, I believe they call it "burly wood"). The neck looks straight with a slight underbow (a good thing).

    2. First fret clearance - WAY hi, about .060" (1.5 mm). Practically unplayable, and too high to simply deepen the nut string grooves.
Fix: removed the nut, filed bottom, reinstalled, 1st fret clearance now .020" (.5 mm). Good. Will prob replace the plastic nut with a bone nut at some time.

3..17th fret action: WAY high, approx .155" (3.87 mm). I know, few people play at the 17th fret, but that's typically where the action is measured on a bass guitar. If the action is high there, it will also be way high on down the neck.
Fix: adjust saddles down so that 17th fret action about .105" (2.63 mm).

Other checks that did not require any changes or adjustments:

    - Checked all frets with fret rocker... Only 2 or 3 frets were very slightly high (maybe couple thousandths "), not enough to require any work.

    - Tuned to pitch, neck relief at 7th fret was about .010" (.25 mm), good, so I made no truss rod adjustment.

    - To my surprise, intonation was almost dead on (within 2-4 cents all strings... close enough for me).

    - Strings - ok to start out with but I have new ones on the way.

Final --- plays great, no string buzzes at the above string clearances, even playing with a heavy hand.

I would recommend this bass for a good knockaround bass.

I gave it 4 stars because , for ME, the adjustments were needed, but not a problem. Maybe for you it's different.

By the way, as I do on ALL instruments before setting them up, I checked all screws for tightness. All needed slight tightening with phillips screwdriver (tuner screws, bolt on neck screws, bridge screws, even the pick guard screws).

Oh yes, one other thing... the D and G strings go under a round string retainer on the peghead. As I was tuning up those strings, that round retainer popped off. The screw pulled out of the peghead because of the upward string pressure on the retainer as the strings were tightened.
Fix: Repaired using the toothpick/titebond method, carefully re-drilled a tiny pilot hole, and used a slightly longer stainless steel screw, 1/8" longer ( 3.12 mm longer), for more thread engagement into the peghead wood. Ok now.

Again, all this sounds like a lot, but for me only about 1 hour start to finish total setup/repair time. I've had worse.

This is an update, 6 months later...
I've been using the bass quite a bit. Really like it, have had no problems. Clearances, which I detailed above, are holding well, very stable and holds tune.
    Recommend this bass.

For $60, you can’t go wrong! I’m pleasantly surprised to say the least. It took a little elbow grease to set up, but that’s to be expected at this crazy price range. I put on some new strings, adjusted the truss rod a hair, lowered the bridge action, and filed down the nut, and now it almost feels like I’m playing my Fender P-Bass. The body is very light weight, most of the weight is in the neck. The bass sounds great with very little pickup noise. Great beginner bass for sure!
