I’m still extremely new to 4K, and don’t yet understand all the bells and whistles and features and whatnot. I don’t quite know what the refresh rate does yet, nor do I really understand what HDR is, other than the fact that it boosts colors. So this review is definitely going to be geared towards other newbies who don’t understand these things either and just want a bottom-line opinion.
And my bottom line opinion?
On the whole, the X900H blows my old HD-TV out of the water. Especially when watching 4K titles through the 4K Blu-Ray player. Colors are lusher. Blacks are darker. And sharpness is greatly increased. I tested the TV and 4K Blu-Ray player out the day they arrived by sticking in my 4K discs of “Blade Runner 2049,” “The Mummy (1999),” and “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” and they were quite the sight to behold. It felt like the next-best-thing to seeing them on the big screen. And heck… even regular Blu-Ray discs seem slightly boosted in quality when displayed on-screen. (Particularly sharpness and color being greatly improved.) 4K streaming on the TV also works like a dream using apps like YouTube and Disney+.
I don’t have the money to invest in a decent surround sound system or sound bar at this point in time (since most of my budget went to the TV and 4K player), but the audio from the TV’s built-in speakers is also a pretty fantastic upgrade over what I was used to. The audio is clearer, and the bass is very deep.
I’ve also had no issue whatsoever with watching cable through our cable box or using our Firestick, which are only regular HD devices and not 4K enabled. They look pretty solid on the TV, albeit they obviously don’t measure up to the 4K discs or streaming titles I’ve watched.
In terms of function, the TV works very well, and it’s easy to use most of the features. Navigating menus was simple enough, and tweaking picture settings was easy and intuitive. I’m not a fan at all of the preset “motion smoothing/soap opera effect,” and was pleased that I could disable it with relative ease. (Although the TV did once seem to randomly turn smoothing back on even though it was disabled. But turning the TV off then back on again seemed to fix it.)
As for downsides? There aren’t many for me. The only one I can really think of is that the screen is somewhat reflective, so you’ll get some glaring during daytime viewing. I’ve also heard other people complain that the screen isn’t particularly bright compared to other 4K TV’s, but I can’t really comment on that as I lack experience. Just know that that may be an issue for you. (Although it’s not for us- it’s brighter than our Samsung ever was.)
As I said, I’m a complete newbie when it comes to 4K, so if you’re more experienced than I am and know of any benefits/problems I didn’t list, feel free to leave them in comments below. But as my first dip into the 4K pool, the Sony X900H is everything I could have wanted. It’s a good TV that offers great AV quality for a pretty decent price. And for me, it’s a perfect 5.
AUGUST 17, 2020 EDIT:
I would like to mention that the issue I had with the motion-smoothing effect being applied despite being turned off has been happening a bit more. It's happening a few times a day, either when I first turn the TV on, or when I switch inputs. Usually turning motion-smoothing back on and off again fixes the issue. I did a little digging and found out I'm not the only person having this problem-- it seems to be some sort-of software bug.
Hopefully it will be fixed in a future update. But I would like to put it out there that this may be an issue if you don't like the motion-smoothing/soap-opera effect. It certainly has become a minor nuisance for me. (But like I said, it's solvable by playing with the settings for a few seconds.)
AUGUST 27, 2020 EDIT:
The Motionflow bug has continued (if anything, it has gotten worse), but according to a post on Sony's help forum, it is being worked on. So hopefully this issue will be resolved soon in a software update.
DECEMBER 26, 2020 EDIT:
The Motionflow bug seems to have been corrected. It's been well over a month since it's happened. And I'm very relieved about that.
I am a post-production professional. I've seen video look its absolute best in the same rooms and on the same displays as the guys who finish projects before they go out into the wild. Having experience with a professionally calibrated grading monitor, when it comes to selecting gear for my own home I'm very particular about what I choose and do patient research with the goal of coming as close as possible to that level of performance without spending a fortune. When I calibrate my personal TVs, I aim for accuracy. My living room is light controlled. I use test patterns to set the black level, the white level, and the color saturation using those old school blue THX glasses. Yeah, I'm that guy. I do it all by eye, I haven't paid to have someone come out with a Colorimeter and CALMAN and get this thing science-lab perfect, okay? On the weekends I'm a regular joe with a remote control and snacks that wants to watch some TV and wants it to look "correct". Having said all of that - I'm blown away by this TV's performance. I've got it calibrated to my liking and this thing makes content look like it's coming right out of the studio. I feel like my living room is my edit bay and this is the reference monitor.
Black levels are nearly-perfect and completely uniform. Colors are very natural. I'll save space by just saying - it lives up to Sony's reputation for image quality. I've watched blu-rays in SDR, Ultra HD blu-rays in HDR10, Netflix in Dolby Vision, Disney Plus in HDR10, PS4 games in SDR and HDR, even DVDs. They all look great. No funky colors. No weird artifacts. No need for extra words.
Read any enthusiast forum about TVs and you'll hear about blooming. I've seen it bloom once or twice during PS4Pro gaming sessions on loading screens. Never during HDR movies or normal content. You a videophile? You can tweak this TV to your heart's content. Want to change something about the picture? There's a slider for that.
I was replacing a Sony I've owned since 2008, which still looks great today, I only wanted a larger screen and wanted to go 4K. I'm very pleased with the X900H's performance. Same goes for the build quality. The design is elegant and looks great in the room. Nothing feels cheap. The packaging was safe, secure, and not wasteful. The experience with Amazon was 5 star. Placed order on a Monday, greeted the UPS man on Thursday. If I have any regrets at all about the purchase - I kinda wish I'd gotten the biggest one they make even though I don't have the space for it.

I've been shopping for a new 4K TV for a while and looked at many including Samsung's QLEDs, SLG's OLEDs, and TCL's miniLEDs, but this is the best bang for the buck. Highly recommended.
Except that there is visible line in middle of panel.
Guess it’s 2 panels connected together to make a 85inch panel. Only visible in dark scenes when bedroom light flashing on screen
