"Move over Nancy Drew and apply some sunscreen!"
Through a series of ridiculous events, thirteen-year-old Penny-Ann Piper has come to live on Piper Island with her quirky Aunt Grace. Although Penny’s new to the eccentric and salty Florida town, she’s proud of her connection to it. After all, her grandparents founded the oddball place where everyone makes it their business to know your business. They’re nosy that way.
So when someone steals the town's mascot, she’s determined to get it back. Principal Berger and Officer Crawl think it’s a prank, but who could have taken it, and why? Penny-Ann’s on-again-off-again best friend Josie? Rocco Garcia, the annoying (but also cute) surfer boy? Twin MMA fighters who think muscles should get them credit in math?
With the help of her new friend, Diamond, who may or may not be part of the X-Men, Penny-Ann revives Piper Investigations, her grandparents’ detective agency. But there’s more to the missing mascot than anyone realizes. It seems someone will do anything to get Penny-Ann to back off the case…including revealing her top-secret, ultra-embarrassing past.

Things you should know about me: I write novels! Some have won awards. Others have been bestsellers. Under Shannon Greenland (my real name) you’ll find teen spies, middle-grade adventure, and romantic suspense. Under S. E. Green (my pen) you’ll find dark and gritty fiction about serial killers, cults, secret societies that do bad things, and whatever else my twisted brain deems to dream up. I love old and grouchy dogs. My humor runs dark and so don’t be offended by something off I might say. I mean no harm. I live in a small Florida beach town, but I'm most often found exploring the world. I eat entirely too many chips. I also love math!

In Penny-Ann, Shannon Greenland, has created a feisty young woman who discovers secrets around the island as well as information about herself. While Penny-Ann struck me as a very young 13-year old, I was nevertheless intrigued by her investigation of the theft and the wide range of characters involved in the plot.
The Case of the Bad Twin is humorous and involving and would be the perfect book for a Middle Grade reader who likes mysteries. Greenland managed to keep this reader guessing about who instigated the crime.
Besides the mystery, Penny-Ann also has to deal with all of the ramifications of a community who knows her mother and thinks that Penny-Ann might be cut from the same cloth. Her fears and insecurities regarding this are very well handled.
Add in a new best friend in Diamond, whose father is a private detective, and the seedlings of a romance with cute Rocco, and The Case of the Bad Twin becomes a very well-rounded story.
And, yes, I could very well see Penny-Ann as a budding Veronica Mars.
I received a copy from Booksprout in exchange for an honest review.
This story has lots of action, plenty of suspects, and a cast of secondary characters that are quite easy to keep straight. Penny and the small crew she assembles to help her investigate are energetic and dogged in their pursuit of the guilty party.
I can see young teens and tweens, even slightly younger children, really enjoying this children's detective tale.
I read a complimentary copy of the book provided by Hidden Gems; this is my voluntary and honest review.
The book follows Penny-Ann Piper. This island was founded by her grandparents. Her mom is currently in jail for conning many. Penny-Ann stays with her aunt on the island. She feels as if she has to make up for helping her mom in conning people.
Penny-Ann has made a time capsule showing the progress of Piper Island for the day it was founded. The ceremony will be in a week. One day, he drops it in the office for the night as no one would be there. The next morning it’s gone. The officer believes that it was a prank and is bound it come up sometime. Penny-Ann sees a bracelet in the office that wasn’t there the night before. She now has a mystery to solve.
I loved this story as it was a quick, fun read. The feelings that Penny-Ann has felt real. Rocco and Diamond were great characters as well. They added so much to the story. I would love to read the next books in the series.
I voluntarily agreed to review the book. There was a free copy provided to me.
