Our amazing heroine is Shayne- and she’s up there with Lo as my favorite Charleigh heroine. We meet Shayne in a heart breaking and riveting first chapter- along with her brother, Grey, and her stepbrothers, one of whom is our brooding, rebel hero, Thayer. We instantly learn of the forbidden love between these two- they are magnets, thunder and lightning- pulled together by an epic force, but they are rocked by the devasting events we learn about straight away. From there, Charleigh unfolds a complex, emotive tale of two people struggling to regroup after loss, trying to make meaning of their new realities, struggling to reconnect with the world, and resisting their own emotions and draw to each other. We’ve got a dash of bully tropes here, some stepbrother taboo, an unexpected mystery, a menagerie of mostly interesting and moderately developed side characters, in particular Shayne’s best friend Valen and Thayer’s brother Holden, and an emotional journey of redemption, catharsis, and acceptance camouflaged by the thirst for answers and revenge.
Shayne is beacon of light- a bundle of innocence and fire. She’s somehow gentle, kind, and vulnerable while also being fierce, tough, and stoic all at once. She rolls with the punches of her life without ever feeling sorry for herself or entitled, and she grows- we see her find herself and her voice amidst all the chaos. I appreciated her resilience, her patience, her level headedness, and her consistent willingness to explore what she knows can crush her. And boy, does Thayer crush her at times. Thayer is what we all love in a light-bully anti-hero. He’s not as rough around the edges as some other anti-heros (and the bully theme does not play centerstage for long if that’s not your thing)- he’s definitely brooding and intimidating but is also accessible and layered. He’s got soul. He’s driven by anger and guilt, and only Shayne seems to reach beyond his emotional fortress to the broken boy inside.
These characters have insane chemistry- it is what I love best about Charleigh’s books, her artfully developed and interconnected characters. Sure, she can write an engaging plot, but where she shines is in the emotional arc of each character and the careful web of emotional ties and meaningful moments she weaves between these two hurting souls. Charleigh always finds a way to help you see the beauty and naturalness of an emotional journey- letting us revel in the cornucopia of emotions her characters’ experience in relationships and trying times- which always makes her characters feel more realized, more three dimensional, and more moving. The emotional chemistry is magnetic, bittersweet, and swoon worthy. Their connection- no matter what the love-hate status at any moment, doesn’t just sparkle, it blazes. And OYE, the steamy times. Some of the hottest stuff I’ve read in Charleigh’s books- and she’s written some steamy stuff. I like me some bossy and dominating yet somehow sweet Thayer bedroom persona.
My ONLY blip is that the ending seemed to wrap up too quickly- the romance was well painted and paced, but the secondary story, the mystery, felt a bit rushed at too neatly unpacked at the end. And, to be honest, the outcome was a bit unfulfilling- I expected more explosion, this was a bit of a whimper. That said, apparently we have another book coming (fingers crossed for Holden’s story) so perhaps we’ll get to explore the aftermath of the mystery solving twist (which I did not see coming) a bit more.
Overall, a great read!
Tell Me Pretty Lies is a New Adult Bully Romance written in dual POV through the eyes of Thayer and Shayne.
Thayer is your typical brooding boy, untouchable to those around him and wanted by every girl within his vicinity. After a devastating accident, the only thing Thayer cares about is how he’s going to get the truth out of Shayne and make her pay for his pain. Thayer and Shayne had chemistry in spades and I loved they relationship they developed during this book.
The plot for Tell Me Pretty Lies wasn’t just the romance between Thayer and Shayne but also had an underlying suspenseful plot after an accident that rocked both their worlds. I loved having this additional plot point that had you flipping pages begging for answers. Romantic Suspense is my jam so having that aspect written into the story made this an even more enjoyable read for me.
Charleigh Rose always manages to capture my attention within the first few pages of any book she writes and keeps it right through to the last page. I always fall for her characters and always devour her books within a matter of hours. And while I really liked Tell Me Pretty Lies, I felt like this book was missing some of the angsty writing that Charleigh is so well known for. I was on the edge of my seat with so many unanswered questions, but my heart wasn’t pounding like it does when I’ve read her other books. Tell Me Pretty Lies felt like a building book for a bigger storyline that I believe will be more fleshed out in the next book in the series.
Without that extra angst, Tell Me Pretty Lies was still a great read that I really enjoyed devouring. With so many questions left unanswered and some interesting if not damaged side characters I know the next book in the series is going to be great! I have a definite soft spot for Holden and Christian!
Thayer is my picture perfect bad boy!!!

I’d been eagerly anticipating this book coming out since it was announced and we were able to get a sneak peek into the prologue! I was able to finish this book in less than a day!
To begin with I don’t normally enjoy the stepbrother trope as much per say, but here I really liked the dynamic! I like that we are introduced to the characters who’ve already known each other in a long while and I LOVE the brother-sister dynamic between Holden and Shane!
I was very surprised when the kind of Murder mystery vibe came up, but it’s my second favourite genre to ready so I was PUMPED! I felt like I was trying to guess who it was and when I did guess right I began to doubt myself of if it was them! Can only be brilliant writing when that happens!
Moreover, I know the book is amazing when I’m loving the support character, Valen and Holden stoke my heart and I LOVE their dynamic I’m excited to see in the future where that leads!
Overall, it was an amazing read and would definitely reread - also did you see the paperback omg it’s so beautiful!

This book was absolutely everything I didn’t know I needed...
I haven’t had my emotions played with as much as I did reading Shayne and Thayer’s story! I wasn’t sure what to expect from reading the blurb but this book was absolutely nothing like what I expected. The rawness of these characters, their forbidden love, the memories and emotions that have tied them together for years could be felt in every page and it was an honour to learn their story.
This book was not only powerful but mysterious. The plot contained twists and turns which I didn’t expect and you saw the series of tragic events that followed from one catastrophic moment in all of these characters lives.
I am now a Charleigh Rose mega fan and intend to read everything she’s written. The angst in Tell Me Pretty Lies sent my heart into overdrive and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next.
“Slowly, I approach the injured tree from that night, pressing my palm against the bare strip of bark that’s much lighter than the rest of the tree, amazed by its resilience. I decide right here and now that I want to be like this tree. A little scarred, but still standing strong.”

I'm a sucker for a mysterious, broody make character so obviously loved Thayer and I did quite like Shayne too, most of the time I wasn't thinking about how they were step siblings and just enjoyed their interactions. the plot to this was amazing so aside from the drama between Thayer and Shayne there was also much to keep me locked in. Plus Holden!! He was such a scene stealer, absolutely loved him, can't wait to see what's in store for him if he gets a book!

I nearly spat my tea out when the pierceer told her to throw away her loofa... because omg yes! This is truth!!!!!
HOLDEN, his character was my favourite, and I'm hoping we get his story soon.
I was on the edge of my seat for the first 75%.
I had several, and I do mean several theories on what happened to Danny.
Then when all the piece finally came together, I was left thinking... really that's it! The whole ending was just, anti climatic. Which is why I removed that final star.
All round, it's a good read but I would have liked to see a little more of OMG WHAT moment!
