My name is Christian Bateleur. I served eight years as an Army Ranger, which means I can disembowel a normal man with a popsicle stick. That training however does as much against the Tainted as my extensive knowledge of ‘80s movie lines or innate New York sarcastic wit. Oh, and I have no idea how to use the powers that were bestowed on me. Picture The Greatest American hero with better hair. So basically, I’m screwed.
On the bright side, I teamed up with an eclectic bunch who are a cross between the United Nations and the Justice League. You know, the typical collection of old mentor, good friend, tech expert, and badass doctor. In these pages I’ve documented the events that unfolded right here in the Big Apple.
If you like butt kicking action, supernatural battles, and random references to eighties movies, this may be the read you’ve been looking for. If not, maybe should reevaluate your life choices.

The overall story is fun and fast-paced and delivers some great characters and action scenes. The cast of characters is diverse and enjoyable and ranges from Hager a Hasidic Jew and leader of the Bishops to Soon-Li a skilled warrior who is both kind and deadly. These supporting characters blend well with Christian, the main protagonist, and narrator of the story. Christian is a wisecracking and genuinely funny ex-army ranger who finds himself suddenly involved with a mysterious group known as the Bishops: an ancient group of protectors that shield the world from the tainted, a mysterious group of evildoers that wish to bring misery and pain to the world.
The origins and doctrine of the Bishops are fascinating as the author blends thousands of years of history and concepts of many religions together to create a secret society that is well thought out and memorable. The Bishops are my favorite aspect of the story and I found myself consistently wanting to find out more about them and their powers. The bishops alone are reason enough to warrant a read and I am excited to see how the author will further flesh out the group and its long-standing conflict with the Tainted in future sequels.
Overall I recommend this novel to anyone who loves fantasy, action, and a book that doesn't take itself too seriously. This book is sure to make a fast, fun, and easy read for whoever picks it up.
I can’t wait to read the next in the series.
