I like that this documentary dispelled so many stereotypes and that it really unpacks social issues and history dogging the Asian community here in the United States (I.e., the “model minority” moniker). This is the history lesson you weren’t taught in school. As an African-American, I took a special interest, comparing the Asian experience in America with the Black experience here in this country. I’ve watched this documentary several times. If I were a high school Social Studies teacher, I’d incorporate this documentary into my lesson plan. Bravo PBS!!

This series is outstanding... but it could have used yet one more episode. In its emphasis on struggle, it underemphasizes success. You would scarcely know from this series that Asian-Americans have a higher annual income than any other group (including white Americans), and have managed to become better-educated than any other group, too. How and why this came to be would seem to be an essential part of the story, too.

Being a third generation Japanese American, I appreciate the struggles and triumphs that my parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents experienced. I'm humbled and thankful that they helped pave the way for my generation's opportunities and successes. I learned way more about it from these videos than from my parents because they tended to not talk about it. I highly recommend to anyone interested in the history of Asian Americans and American history in general. Particularly the young generations, whom are far removed from those that pioneered the way.
