It’s been a while since I read a Steph Young book, so I was in the mood for more delectable mysteries. As always, her work suffers from an embarrassing lack of editing. Typos abound; paragraphs can take up entire pages; words are missing; Young rambles on at times.

And yet, the content is just so good I happily overlook it. If you want the most fascinating stories on Earth, Steph Young has you covered.

This volume contains many tales that are interesting, if not well-written, covering unexplained events through the ages. Some will leave you shaking your head while others will leave you shaking.

Unexplained does not mean that there IS no explanation, only that it has not been discovered. The researcher and reader must rely on the information that is discoverable, and that is often insufficient to provide an explanation.

We know that Jack the Ripper existed. However, the surviving information does not supply his identity. Unless more information is discovered to this end, his identity will always remain an unexplained mystery.

The first stories in this book seemed to relate to somewhat recent history (50s-70s) but after that, the stories are just out of the blue with many of them having no background information or year/location, several occurring in the mid 1800s.

One of the stories talks about a communication attempt with Mars in 1928 and people sitting around their 'transistor' radios to listen for a reply. There were no transistor radios in 1928 (first was in 1954). This whole book is a crock It would appear... but no more of a crock then ghost stories around the campfire I guess.

The book contains a pretty random collection of supposedly true stories of unsolved mysteries. Some of it is quite interesting and did make me want to do a bit more research into the events; some of the incidents described, even briefly, in the book, do give the reader a satisfying 'chill' of creepiness. However the text is so poorly written that it's difficult to enjoy reading it. There are a lot of typos, repetition, poorly constructed phrases and grammatical mistakes. The author does not know how to use commas or upper/lower cases correctly. I know many people do not find poor grammar annoying, but some of us do. There are also factual errors - for example the author of the novel 'Dracula' was Bram Stoker, not Brad Stoker! The book reads like a transcript of podcasts rather than an actual book - fair enough, this is probably what it is and not every published book has to be a great work of literature, however I feel that a little more care in writing and efficient proof reading would have made the book a lot more worthwhile.

I especially enjoyed the Brompton Time Machine, the Cryptogamist, and the Grey Man. A great variety, told throughout many eras so it’s a treat for those who like historical mysteries too I would say.

I cannot understand why these books in the series are so badly written.
Typos aplenty, grammar =awful, syntax= very bad....honestly, I am shocked that these books are not withdrawn and corrected by the publishers!
As for the 'store's well, bottom of the barrel scrapes.
Sorry, I will not be buying anymore if Young's books because of reasons given plus the pages ,once folded flat, fall off.

So creepy and fascinating!! The tale of the Highgate vampire was given a fresh new perspective, and a whole new terror!! I never knew he almost charmed a taxi driver lady and made her dream of him... The chilling tale of Claudette Sochon was just horrifying, especially as it never revealed what exactly the Monster was. Actually this is what makes Steph so brilliant, she never reaches a full conclusion and leaves it up to us to decide!! Take the eerie tale of "Subject C" she never explains exactly what "Subject C" ever was, only that it is about eight foot. Makes it more chilling. She has obviously remembered how true horror is not the dark itself, but what is hidden in it...
