- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2024Kind of pricey for my taste, but with 10 discs it was only about $9.50 per, so I bit. Had a couple of the discs already, but knew they'd sell. Nevertheless, had buyer's remorse until I started listening. This volume covers the Golden Age of Neil as far as I'm concerned. His personal life seems to have been a hot mess but it spawned a great amount of high quality productivity. Back in the day, I thought the Wheel in the Ditch era was just freakin depressing, but over time the songs have really grown on me, and there's pop gems along with all the angst. There are no dogs, and in my opinion, the Tuscaloosa, Duma and Homegrown discs rank with his all-time best, but the Budokan concert recording is the pick of the litter. Amazing sound separation and performances gave me a new appreciation for songs I've heard many dozens of times before.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2021What's not to love? It's great to hear Neil progress through these few years into a major talent. TONS of gems that weren't out before....and sparkling sound. My favorite Neil Young era. Now at an affordable price too. Thanks Mr. Young!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2021Something like this is a bit difficult to rate because it all depends on how much of the previously released material you already own.
I’ve been a Neil fan since the beginning and have bought every single release all the way up to last month’s “Way Down in the Rust Bucket.” I love it all. And I really admire the period covered in “Archives Volume II” (late 1972-early 1976)—part of which is often called Neil’s “dark period.”
The “Archives” projects are quite welcome and a lot of fun to wade through. That said, they are, I believe, strictly for the fans. They are not “greatest hits” packages, and the bulk and price of Vol. I and now Vol. II are probably too much for the casual listener or even the casual fan. Only the hardcore true believers are likely interested in outtakes and live versions that dominate these collections. So, why do these Archives sets contain full disks that were previously and recently released? Regarding Volume II, I’m talking about “Roxy—Tonight’s the Night Live” (released separately in 2018), “Tuscaloosa” (released separately in 2019), and “Homegrown” (released separately in 2020). As one of the loyal fans, I already bought these disks. That’s three of the ten disks in Vol. II. Did we need them in here? (The same thing occurred with Vol. I, but only two disks were separately released.) Three more disks contain over 3/4 of the original tracks from individual albums released during the period covered (“Tonight’s the Night,” “On the Beach,” and “Zuma”)… so if you already own those albums, you have those tracks, too. Did we really need two full disks of “Tonight’s the Night” material? The box could have been smaller, less expensive, and could have concentrated on stuff the fans didn’t have, because I don’t think non-fans are going to buy the box.
That’s my only beef. Regarding everything else on these ten disks, almost half the tracks are previously unreleased versions of songs we know, or previously unreleased original songs we’ve never heard. A handful of the unreleased tracks are with Crosby Stills Nash & Young, and these are gems (even though two of them are the same song, each recorded 3 years apart).
AND THESE UNRELEASED TRACKS ARE WONDERFUL. They are 5 Stars. I’ve rated the box 4 stars because of the repeated material.
The oh-my-gosh-this-is-great material includes:
Disk 1 “Everybody’s Alone.” This disk contains a lot of unreleased stuff, including a studio version of the gorgeous “The Bridge,” tracks with the Stray Gators we haven’t heard, and a CSNY version of “Human Highway” recorded in 1973. The latter song is exquisite.
Disk 6 “The Old Homestead.” My favorite disk in the box has much unreleased stuff and early versions of material that appeared later. Fantastic.
Disk 8 “Dume.” While this disk contains too much of “Zuma,” there are some other terrific unreleased tracks with Crazy Horse and solo.
Disk 9 “Look Out for My Love.” More unreleased stuff, some with the Stills-Young Band, and a beautiful version of “Midnight on the Bay” with CSNY. Crosby & Nash were famously deleted from the Stills-Young tracks being recorded in 1976, and now we finally get to hear a couple!
Disk 10 “Odeon Budokan.” Half of the tracks are Neil acoustic solo at a 1976 concert in London, and half are with Crazy Horse in Japan. All fabulous stuff, except for the jerks in the audience calling out requests!
The packaging is classy, the sound is fantastic, and, despite the repetition of stuff that us hardcore fans already own, this is a must-have purchase for Neil Young aficionados. And I suppose if you don’t already own the six albums I mentioned earlier, then this box set will be a god-send for you!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2025An outstanding time capsule. Hearing these songs (in chronological order even) after years of not, has been a true pleasure. It was good to hear old familiar songs, some with differing versions. It was a pleasure to hear songs and albums that where never released as planned. Of course, most of those songs went on future albums, but there were a few "little" gems that were left behind. I read about those as they began the Archives project, so it has been fun to discover those for the first time.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2023I was surprised by how good the CD’s sound. Great value, 10 CD’s. I have all these albums on Vinyl, thought it would be nice to have them on CD.

W. J. MarshallReviewed in the United Kingdom on March 7, 20215.0 out of 5 stars Neil’s most musically fertile period.
I ordered this set as a birthday treat for myself. The original limited edition issue was horrifyingly expensive and sold out before most fans had the opportunity to apply for a set. When I saw this edition advertised at half the cost of the original set I had to order myself a copy.Like the previous reviewer I feel the packaging is a bit of a let down for something which costs as much as this set does.I bought it for the music and the music is tremendous with alternate versions and unissued songs. Some of the material has been available on bootleg but much of this is new to my ears.3 of the discs have already been issued as single discs so I would feel a little peeved if I already had them and had to buy 3 more copies to get the music I don’t have yet. This set is a treasure trove of magnificent gems.Of particular interest to me are the unissued tracks by the Stills-Young band and the CSNY tracks which have remained in the vaults for 45 years. They give a strong indication of what CSNY could have delivered without the drugs, egos and bickering. This set is an essential peak into Young’s most creative period and an amazing showcase for both his songwriting skills and virtuosity on both electric and acoustic guitars.
