The Roots Of Our Food (Conscious Kids Collection) Paperback – Large Print, November 4, 2020

4.8 out of 5 stars 24 ratings

Finally, a children’s book that promotes plant-based eating!

As the title suggests, The Roots Of Our Food takes an inquisitive child on a journey to discover the origins of their meal. The kid encounters a farmer who explains how seeds grow into fruits, veggies, and more. Farmer Joe also teaches young readers about green practices such as shopping at farmer’s markets, buying locally, and the importance of families cooking whole foods together.

Although The Roots Of Our Food does not mention the word vegan, it has deliberately excluded farm animals, meat, and animal-derived foods and instead celebrates plant-based eating. Mindfulness, gratitude and compassion are themes of this rhyming story.

• Available in paperback, ebook, and audio formats.
• Recommended for children ages 4-8, preschool through 3rd grade.
• The contents of this book do not include farm animals, animal food products or byproducts and is therefore suitable for vegan kids and vegan families.

Let us restore our lost connection with wholesome, healthy foods and the origins from which they come! The Roots Of Our Food is part of the Conscious Kids Collection of books that support early teachings of ethical consumerism.

Hi there!

I'm Adriane Marie, the creator and founder of HEALabel, an awareness initiative and website, HEALabel.com, that aims to improve consumer transparency by shedding light on our purchases (especially food) and the impact they have on our health, environment, animals, and laborers.

I'm also the author, illustrator and narrator of The Roots Of Our Food, a plant based, vegan kids book. The story begins when a curious child ponders the origins of their meal. With that child we embark on a journey of discovery, visiting Farmer Joe who teaches us the basics of plant-based foods.

The story encourages being mindful of what we eat and having gratitude for our food. I hope this book will help foster a healthier perspective in which children reflect on everyone and everything that helps bring their food into fruition and onto their plate. Although the book does not mention the word vegan, it does promote plant-based eating and has deliberately excluded farm animals, meat and animal-derived foods.

Also known as “Aunt Dee Dee” to my nephew, I believe the future of our planet depends on the understanding and connection children have with the world around us.

I grew up in Kentucky and I am a proud descendant of many hard-working farmers. In my free-time, I enjoy plant-based cooking, getting outdoors, teaching English and studying language.

Great book for young children to understand and appreciate the importance of nutritional food so as to encourage them to eat well. The book teaches them the source of natural healthy foods and in so doing hopefully they will be motivated to develop lifelong good eating habits. In today's largely urban society children are disconnected from agriculture. They consume too much artificial and processed foods. By understanding how vegetables and fruits are grown they will hopefully be more motivated to develop eating habits that will result in optimal physical, mental and emotional well-being. Recommended for parents and teachers to use.

This was a great book to compliment a recent trip berry picking with my 1.5 year old. Love the content, the realistic photos and the rhyming.

In a world with no shortage of children’s media that re-enforces consumerism, sugar-worship, toxic masculinity, heteronormative gender roles, racial bias, and tribalism, it’s refreshing to encounter material like this. Sustainable food-sourcing and healthy eating habits are crucial topics for children who will be facing a future of climate change and all that that entails (food shortages, environmental instability, unchecked commercial lobbying). They certainly won’t learn about these things in schools or from main-stream media. Yes, there are plenty of documentaries and books out there that cover these topics, but very few are written specifically for children. Let’s hope Aunt Dee Dee’s message spreads far and wide.

An amazing kids book complete with cute rhymes and colorful images! Help your children recognize different foods and how they grow with this. I’d read this to my little cousin any chance I could get, I know he’d love to point at the foods that he recognized. Beautiful photos and really nice layout. Would highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great kids' book about vegan farming

A sweet little book that shows to children that farming can be possible and (literally) fruitful without killing or living off animals. It does so subtly and without preaching against the traditional approach and this is what I like especially. Just feels like a total normal way to do it. The rhymes are cute, so are the illustrations. Got it for my 4 year old nieces. Seems like the perfect age for it, even though I think you could start a little younger already.
Compliments to the author, hope we will get more in a similar vein soon.
