I ‘ve learned long ago to read Scare Street books in daylight! Of course, often the bright sunlight and cheery day fail to mitigate the chills which these stories elicit, nor the nightmares sure to follow. But that never stops me, because I can rely on the authors of Scare Street to chill my marrow and whiten my hair.
No exception is Volume 11 of this breathtaking series. A high premium is placed on Poetic Justice here, in the Poe mode, with delights such as “Laconia School,” “Free Space,” and Frogs,” each of which revolve on human depredation and the balancing brought by the Supernatural. Then there’s stories of grief that still gladden the heart, such as the wonderful and tear wrenching “Your Tiny Hand.
What I like most about these stories is how they slowly build to a climax that you know is coming but are still shocked when you get to it. This is how horror should be done. If these fine authors ever run out of ideas, the world will be much poorer for it.
