Somehow they must learn to work together, understand the local needs, and repair the portal, all while avoiding the wrath of the legendary beithir.

Gabe and Rathna are both incredibly guarded people, although it manifests differently: he holds people at bay by being amusing and agreeable and keeping them from taking a deeper look, and she holds people at bay by being proper and prickly and making them not want to. When they're put together to solve a problem with a magical transportation portal, they start to work past each others' guardedness, and we get to watch them figure out how to work together in multiple senses of the word.

The plot solves itself rather glibly and quickly...long build-up, rapid denouement...a bit disappointing since the promised (?) magic creature does not show up...the hero is a bit silly, the heroine more promising, but the whole thing fizzles into a cute romance, with the HEA hovering on the horizon...the text could have been sharper, more adventurous and more decisive...but it is amusing and sweet...
