The TLDR is this is a high quality device with few flaws. The flaws I will mention are, admittedly, on the nitpicky side.
At the end of the day, sure there are very many other laptops which can match the Razer Blade 14's performance and specs at a lower price, but that is at the cost of build quality. That will be very important if you choose to use this as a portable device. I highly recommend that if you wanted a high powered portable machine, you consider the Razer Blade 14.
Pros:
- Handles Next Gen Gaming at QHD Flawlessly.
I am able to play competitive games at high - max setting with framerates around 70 - 90 FPS. Halo Infinite's multiplayer beta ran at such performance for my extended gameplay sessions of 4 to 6 hours. Other popular games which aren't as demanding, such as FF14, Risk of Rain 2, would stay about 100 FPS around the 120 - 160 FPS range. Basically, anything that has come out in the last 10 years can expect very high frame rates at maximum settings.
- Great Temperatures.
Gaming laptops run hot when pushed, that is to be expected. But this machine is able to maintain good temps while gaming for long periods. And when unplugged, I am able to use the machine for basic streaming and browsing without creating any heat.
- Apple Level Build Quality.
This is essentially a black Macbook with crazy specs inside. Everything feels really solid and sturdy. The device has a very nice heft to it. The trackpad is very reminiscent of a Macbook's track pad, which is a good thing. It clicks with good feedback and is very responsive all while having a nice matte texture to it.
- Great Display.
Nothing much to say here, the colors on the screen are very good and I didn't have much issue play games using the built in screen, though much of my experience has been through an external monitor. The screen is perfect for media consumption.
- Great Battery Life.
The battery lasts around 5-7 hours streaming media and browsing with some screen brightness down and the RGB keyboard at a dimmer level (I like to keep it on because it looks cool). Like all laptops, don't expect the battery life to be that long when running games or resource heavy programs like a video editor or compiling and running code.
Cons:
- Very Shallow Keyboard.
Its a decent laptop keyboard but lacks the travel of other laptop keyboards I have in the past and doesn't come off as very tactile. Not a big problem for me, who used it attached to an external mechanical keyboard and monitor.
- Razor Software.
In the past I would call this bloat but Razor has seemed to improved their software to be very straightforward. This is listed as a con because the software is very insistent that you create a Razor account to use it, and a lot of important features such as the fan speeds and performance tuning are locked behind the software.
Gaming: I get 180 FPS average on RS: Seige at 1440p ultra settings and no taa (it’s a blurry mess and only renders at half resolution so I keep it off) and the cpu never exceeds 80C and the 3080 never above 71C. The 14 inch screen is very pixel dense at 1440p so anti-aliasing isn’t needed for games which improves performance!
Battery life: I’m super happy with the battery life. On better battery life with screen dimmed to 210 nits I get 14 hours battery life doing office stuff. At full brightness white point is at 350 nits which is good enough for in full sunlight viewing (also thanks to the anti-glare matte display coating, glossy displays would need to be 500 nit screens to perform as good.
CPU: the ryzen 9 5900hx is very powerful yet sips the power and remains cool doing every day and medium duty tasks. So much so that the only time I’ve ever heard the fans start spinning is when I video game which is a big deal!
Build Quality: the CNC machined aluminum body is amazing, very sturdy design (so much so I couldn’t believe it was also so thin), uniform black anodizing, and good clean lines. The only gripe is the finger prints. Black and dark colors are notorious for showing finger prints and oily smudges (which is why Apple went with grey color as it masks the fingerprints better) the 2021 razer blade 15’s got an added anti-fingerprint coating to combat this but unfortunately the blade 14 didn’t get the same treatment.
My only other gripe is the rgb keyboard. For some reason your rgb settings are not saved to the bios instead the razer synapse software loads your rgb preferences after logging in to windows so I have to hide the rainbow keyboard during business meetings, etc until my white keyboard lighting gets loaded. RAZER, if you care about being the windows version of Apple (ie high end metal laptops for professionals that like to game) you need to fix 3 things:
1. Make a sleeper blade 14 with the subtle stealth 13 razer logo.
2. Either fix the rgb so it’s saved to bios so the keyboard doesn’t commence with unicorn vomit every time I open my computer or just make a blade 14 keyboard that’s just white leds.
3. ANTI-FINGERPRINT coating!!!! Seriously, we are walking advertisements for your products and most people walking by and catching a glimpse of the laptop will be turned off by the guaranteed smudges and fingerprints on it. It’s impossible to touch this thing without leaving them all over it.
Top reviews from other countries
There are however three things you should keep in mind:
1. In order to handle the heat generated by the CPU plus the 3070 (or even 3080) in such a small chassis, the GPU is limited to 100 Watts. This means you can't fully utilise all of its power. A machine with a 160 or even a 130 Watts GPU power limit will certainly outperform this laptop.
2. No mux switch if you plug in an external display: the dGPU will always be used even if all you do is put on a powerpoint presentation. As a result, battery will drain fast when attached to an external monitor: from 100 to 0 in two hours or less. So you must always bring a charger with you if you plan to use an external monitor. When using the laptop's own screen, smart selection of dGPU or integrated GPU is enabled, resulting in 4 or 5 hours battery life for light workloads.
3. 16Gb of memory is all you get. Memory is not expandable.
If all the above issues don't effect your workflow and you are looking for a powerful yet portable machine, this could be the right laptop for you.
Garbage!
