Better than the TS101
*Image caption: If you’re looking at this image and thinking “this guy should be a professional product photographer”… first off, you’re too kind and second, I was thinking the exact same thing.* If you’re choosing between the TS101 and the Pinecil then I’ll make this review short, get the Pinecil. Because other reviewers aren’t as thoughtful as I am, I didn’t have the luxury of knowing the above so I bought both. I first unboxed and plugged-in the TS101 and right away the iron started heating up ridiculously fast. As I fumbled around trying to turn it off I was then thoroughly confused by the menu system, so much so that I ended up going into “boost” mode which made it even hotter. This rough start was not at all surprising considering most Chinese products have horribly confusing software even if the hardware is insanely good. So I did some research and found out that most soldering hobbiests prefer IronOS which is an open-source OS that is (if you haven’t guessed) specifically for smart soldering irons. It turns out that the TS101 can be flashed with IronOS so I thought perfect let’s do that. Which brings me to my final reason for convincing you to go with the Pinecil - depending on your computer, the OS you’re running, the cable you’re using, whether your TS101 is authentic or not, and which year it was manufactured.. you may not be able to flash it or even upgrade the firmware. There’s numerous posts online about this, so much so that I believe the TS101 is no longer recommended by those who developed IronOS. If you are lucky and all the stars in China align for you then you may be fortunate enough to install ironOS on your TS101, I was not. So I put the TS101 away and grabbed the Pinecil. The pinecil V2 (identified by the green grip) already has IronOS pre-installed on it so we’re already off to a much better start. After plugging it in for the first time the Pinecil did not rapidly start heating, instead it presents you with a very thoughtful and easy to navigate menu complete with animated icons and scrolling text describing what each menu item does. In the time it took me to fumble around with the TS101 and unsuccessfully try to turn it off, I was already changing my Pinecil’s settings to my liking and learning about all the many features it has to offer that the TS does not (or perhaps weren’t explained in its horrible menu). Outside of the menu, the Pinecil supports up to 88W OOTB compared to the TS101’s 65W. Supposedly the TS101 can support higher wattages with the latest firmware, but since it may be impossible for you to update said firmware let’s just assume it doesn’t. Lastly, the Pinecil comes with a newer style Pine designed soldering tip (6.2ohms) compared the the longer TS-style tip (8 ohms), but it supports both. The benefit of the short tip (ST line) on the Pinecil (other than the lower electrical resistance and improved ergonomics) is that the thermocouple is closer to the end of the tip itself which provides more accurate temp readings. In conclusion, get the Pinecil V2. If for some reason you’re still considering the TS101 at this point then make sure you get an authentic Miniware and not one of the clones Amazon also carries like Uy Chan. You might have a better chance of flashing the firmware on an authentic but even that is a gamble.

If you dont have a soldering iron, the pinecil should be your first, and potentially it will be your last, because you really dont need that much more unless you're gonna be doing microsoldering every day, and you might even find it works for that too.

The tips are a bit expensive, but the default is good enough for most things. Being able to power it off USBC C PD is the best ever, at this point "portable" stations that don't do this are embarrassing themselves.

The barrel jack is a nice to have but i havent found a need for it. If youre a drone person and have batteries and connectors its probably handy but a usb pd gan charger is gonna do you ust fine. I recommend 60 watts which will get you borderline if not optimal performance already, but ive been able to do reasonable soldering jobs on 30 watt blocks as well which surprised me. Its definitely not ideal but it works and i really appreciate that they didnt cut it off at lower wattages.

I also have a 65 watt brick and that works indistinguishably from my 100 watt wall charger and makes the set up even more portable.

I really cant say enough good things about this. Its still somehow cheaper than the much less versatile entry level soldering stations that I still sometimes go back to and immediately wonder why I didnt just grab the pinecil. You will have to get some accessories to make it a portable "station" so add on a couple bucks for some tip cleaning supplies, really you just need a sponge and some water if you dont wanna get a metal wick. You can really build out a nice little custom portable kit to surround this and still be around the same price as a larger station.

The main con is finding a good stand so you dont have to just set down the tip horizontally. But i haven't burned myself doing this yet, and it has a 10 min off timer so do as you will.

All I can say is WOW! This is possibly the best soldering iron that I have ever used. I needed an iron with adjustable temperature that would work both at the workbench and in the garage, directly on/under/around vehicles. I saw a YouTube video of a maker building a project with this iron and decided I would buy one to try out. This little wonder is absolutely fantastic for fine detailed work on circuit boards (think Raspberry Pi, etc.) and medium/heavy work on automotive connectors and wiring. The unit is solid and arrives well packaged in a foam lined box. You will have to buy a long USB-C to USB-C cable, and a high wattage USB-C charging brick to complete a basic setup. Purchasing an iron rest is also a good idea if you don’t have one. That makes the overall buy-in for a complete setup close to a good bench iron, except this is better suited to move wherever you need it. You just need an extension cord.

I have read there is a way to run this little iron off of a Lithium-ion battery (tool battery), but I have not tried that yet. If true, that would make this unit as portable as a butane powered iron, with better heat control.

I would buy this again, buy it as a gift for a hobbyist friend, and recommend it to my friends and family.

I had to replace my TS version of this from years ago. Looking around all I found are USB-C versions. This is the only one I could find that gave me the option of powering it with USB-C and a DC barrel jack. I wanted to keep the barrel jack because I already have adapters I made for my tool batteries and the car power outlet to DC barrel adapter. This works just as good as my old one with the added benefit of using USB-C if I wanted to. And after the firmware update I was able to use the Bluetooth built, load a simple program on my Mac a remotely control and change the settings.
It can use all the other tips I already have so I didn’t have to buy any new tip for it.

I’ve been doing a lot of electric guitar mods lately, so I figured I’d splurge on a good soldering solution. I immediately got on Reddit expecting recommendations for $200+ Weller soldering kits, and I was prepared to spend it. To my surprise, the overwhelming support for this $40 iron pushed me give it a shot. “$40 for a soldering iron that runs on USB C? Yeah, we’ll see…” I said.

And my goodness did I see.

I initially plugged it into an iPad charging block and it heated up to 450°C in about 15-20 seconds. I was surprised, and satisfied. Then I got the idea to use my Dell Laptop charger and this little sucker pulled 50w to get to 450°c in about 6 seconds.

I highly recommend this device to anyone looking for a soldering iron. And since it’s so popular in the maker community, there are literally hundreds of printable cases and accessories online.

I'm no professional so I don't know what people who use irons on the daily would think of it but for most of my personal projects (LED soldering, some board soldering, some wire soldering) it has been amazing. Only issue I had was with my Anker charger as it started to refuse to work with it but works with everything else and the Pinecil still works with any other charger so I'm at a loss there. As for heating speed, with a high power charger it probably takes less than 8 seconds to reach 300C and the controls are quite intuitive.

Works well. Love the compact size. Lots of different tips as well. I use it alot for setting heat-serts while 3d printing. Heats up decently quickly as well.

This thing is awesome. I just started messing around with small electronics projects and was using a cheap soldering iron, needless to say that thing needed to go. After a little research, I came across the Pinecil and decided I would try it. It doesn’t come with any kind of power supply which was a bummer but I was able to find one easily. Make sure you read the power requirements so you get the right power cable. Once I got my usb c power cable set up, this thing got to working temp in less than 20 seconds.

Really impressed. I love everything about it. Works perfectly with my laptop charger. It works so fast. I bought a really cheap soldering iron from Ali Express before. It made soldering hard. This one is WAY better. It makes everything quick, accurate, and easy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly polished. Struggles with larger ground planes.
Reviewed in Canada on April 30, 2025
This little guy is an incredibly polished piece of hardware. From small details like the LCD changing orientation based on how you hold the iron, to the animated display, you can tell a lot of work has gone into making the hardware and software.

But the key question, of course, is - how does it solder? If it solders poorly then it's useless. And, with a 65W USB-PD connection, it solders well.

As any iron does, it struggles with larger ground planes; that is to be expected. I used this for a custom project with a 2oz 4-layer copper pour on the PCB, and had to use two irons for many of the larger joints, as well as a hot plate to get a particularly stubborn inductor soldered. I don't think this is worth taking a star away for though; it solders well enough at its maximum temperature of 450C as long as you remember to tin the tip regularly and keep it from oxidizing, and handily trades blows with high-end Pace and Weller stations I've used that cost 10 times as much.

One thing it does very nicely is heat up fast. Very fast. It takes around 15 seconds to go from room temperature to 450C, and much less if you're soldering at a more reasonable 350C. This is great because you can cool down the iron if you need it in 10 minutes, without having to wait a minute or two for it to heat back up again. That may sound trivial, but it reduces oxidation and increases the lifespan of your tip.

Speaking of tips - those are cheap, too. Replacements on Amazon can be had for as low as $12, which is plenty low enough considering mine still works like new after a fair amount of usage.

Overall, for the price this is very reasonable. Keep in mind that you'll need to pick up a USB-PD brick and cable with a 65W rating if you don't already have one, which pushes the total to around $110 CAD. With that being said, that price is still excellent for what this iron does, and I've already recommended it to many friends and colleagues.

Seriously, buy this if you need a replacement iron or are getting into the hobby. Cheaper ones are miserable to work with, and this thing is near unbeatable for the price.
