Mysterious deaths force an MI5 agent to investigate his missing memories in this dark psychological thriller.

About the Author

Ann Evans was born and bred in Coventry, West Midlands, and started writing just for fun after giving up her secretarial job to have her three children. Having caught the writing 'bug' there was no stopping her, and as her children grew up, she continued to write for all kinds of genres, from compiling and editing her parish magazine, to writing school pantomimes. She then got a job at her local newspaper, sneaking in through the back door, as she puts it, and become a staff feature writer. She is now a full time freelance writer, writing magazine articles on a wide range of topics, plus writing adventure and mystery books for children, young adults, reluctant readers and some romance. The title "The Bitter end" might give you an inkling how the story is going to end but all through the book I was hoping evil would not be the winner.
Thanks through NetGalley and Bloodhound Books I got to read an advance copy prior to the publishing date. I can highly recommend reading this book.
It's an easy read but full of mysteries. Touches on some of the beliefs in Christianity and even uses the name "Lamia" out of Greek Mythology to represent the evil spirit. Through all that it even brings up some historical and current political possibilities. It all ties up together nicely in this book.

I just finished reading The Bitter End: Direction from the Devil and I most likely would not have asked to review this book if I had known the full title beforehand. I don’t like or believe in witchcraft and that is what this whole book is about. If you do like witchcraft you would probably enjoy it. It’s a very fast read I started last midnight and it is now 10:30 am and no I haven’t been reading all this time. Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to review this book in exchange for my unbiased review. I will give this book 3 stars because it was actually kind of interesting but still not my cup of tea.

4 Disturbing Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Well now... this book was very dark and very disturbing.... i’d say it almost slipped into the horror genre with some supernatural elements... you really do need to suspend belief for this one, so if that’s not your bag I’d avoid it.... it also had a dark creepy atmosphere that made me a little more afraid of the things that go bump in the night....

Hitler... a cottage in the woods... missing memories... this book really has all the elements of a really freaky movie.... the kind of movie I’d spend hiding behind my popcorn for most of.... this book really is not for the faint of heart! Perfectly paste... well plotted... with something creepy around every corner.... this book will keep you on edge, your brain on overdrive, your heart beating fast, and your palms sweating... when I was done I needed a shower, a cocktail, and a romcom!

Absolutely recommend to fans of a thriller with a supernatural and dark element...

When I signed up on Netgalley to read this I was under the impression it was in the mystery/thriller category....not supernatural. I don’t read these types of books because I’m not really interested in them but I went ahead and read anyway. I’m glad I did. This story is very well written. It grabs you right from the start and carries you all the way through. It could have easily gotten lost in its plotting, trying to tie all the revenge/possession components together but these authors kept it all on an even keel. I found the ending disappointing but all in all while I would not read this type of book again I do recommend to people who enjoy this genre. Beware however that it is dark. Very dark.

I don't usually read horror because I scare easily - and this book scared the living daylights out of me. It has an incredibly fast-paced plot, which had me being late for work on a number of occasions because I just had to finish the chapter - and then the next. Ann and Robert have between them written a fantastic (in all senses of the word) book and one or both of them has a very twisted imagination! Lamia is pure evil with no redeeming features - which is exactly as it should be - therefore there are some shocking moments and no sentimentality. How could there not be a sequel?

I read this book in one day, found it fascinating in the way it dealt with modern day witchcraft. It begins with Hitler, and the explanation of how Lamia, a dark entity, passes from one soul to the next, and then the story moves on to the 1980s and beyond. It is a cleverly crafted book, no spoilers, but well worth a read. I can almost feel a sequel arising from this one! Five stars from me.

Wow,what a story. It kept me guessing all the way through. The characters were well rounded and believable as they fought with their demons and overcame obstacles in their way. In places it was sad but left you wanting more. I read it in two sittings. It was fast paced throughout and I'm sure there will be a follow up - there just has to be.
