I am a kinship carer and kinship adoptive parent as well as a natural parent. My youngest was four when Glow was released. With required video chats throughout the week with two different parents and a restless four year old the Glow was a dream come true. The built in games, library, and activities and the way the users could interact was cutting edge. There was a wide range of skill levels avaliable. For a system in its infancy it was leaps ahead of the competition. The system had faults. It would be glitchy at times and boot the app user off but it was still more engaging and useful than any other tool we'd found. The surface the mat was on needed to be super clean (difficult at times with little ones) and flat. There was a learning curve to getting all the interactive aspects to work smoothly but that was no worse than teaching them a new game. With almost four hundred thousand (400,000) children in foster care this could be a game changer for how those families stay connected and how it helps foster carers truly "foster" the children and their natural family connections. If Amazon's concern was low sales, as I've heard it was, they should look at government contracts. The set up was easy and once we figured out our way around in the system it was a highlight fir us every week. I'll have to find our photos and come back to post.

Getting notification that the Amazon Glow was going to be discontinued and unsupported completely breaks my heart! This is the main way that I am able to connect and bond with my grandchildren that live far away. We all have really enjoyed this wonderful device. I am saddened that we will not be able to keep our connection going. My grandkids are ages 3,5 and 7. The Glow definitely helped to keep their interest while we were playing and visiting. They even enjoyed playing on it by themselves at times. While I understand from a business standpoint the decision to stop selling them (my opinion is that it was not well advertised as I only saw it on Amazon and only recently on Facebook), I feel jilted by it no longer being supported. In my opinion, they could easily let those of us that have and use it to just continue with what it already has on it. There is no need to add new content. We play with what is currently available over and over, enjoying it each and every time. Being such a large and successful company, I can't imagine the cost would be very much for them to do so. While I appreciate being refunded, the money does not at all equate to the time and bonding that takes place by being able to play and connect with my grandchildren. We absolutely loved this device. It's too bad that this device was not brought to fruition a year or two earlier while we were all on COVID lock down, as I feel it would have been a huge success and one that would continue to be used today even though life is "back to normal".
I have looked online for another type of device like this to no avail. There is one app that I found which has a monthly subscription, but it lacks considerably in comparison. While it may help, I don't feel that my grandchildren will enjoy it nearly as much, which means they will not want to connect as often. Which makes my heart sink.
I hope that Amazon (or another company) comes up with an option that allows this type of connection. As a military wife and mother, the use of this device would have taken off if advertised correctly. So much more could have been done to reach others. I could see this being a fantastic way to connect with other friends and family by making the content age appropriate (games and books). There are many elderly that would love to be able to play a game with or be read to by someone. The only thing it was lacking was the ability to family share (connect with more than one person to play games with).

Amazon Glow was the device we never knew we wanted. We grew to love so much over the year plus we used it. We miss it terribly.
With this device, our boys could call their cousins and grandparents on their own, and have daily meaningful interactions. They had a blast with all the games! We all loved how they would use the Glow to stay connected with family that was out of state. Sure we could use phone and video calls to stay in touch, but it was the casual nature of the interactions like, "Hi Grandpa! Would you like to play a game?" that really made this platform shine!
The games were innovative, and the interfaces were really clever! How the Glow allowed them to see each other while playing on a shared gameboard was truly unique. A small video window wasn't fighting for screen space, and the "touchscreen" was so large and intuitive.
Other than long distance interactions, the Glow allowed brothers to play fun and challenging games with one another. One would get the Glow, and the other would get a tablet. This worked beautifully! They could play in different rooms, or at the same table. They were both entertained and played [relatively] peacefully with one another regularly. There were so many games! And new titles were ALWAYS being released! This was a unique platform that really provided truly unique opportunities.
We've used Osmo for years, and while that is a great platform for educational games, etc., but it is completely different from the Glow. The Glow allowed for real communication and connections, whereas Osmo is designed primarily for a single user at a single location.
There really isn't anything out there like the Glow for the regular consumer. I mean, sure, we could set up (2) devices, one for an online connected game, and another for a video call, but then you need two devices each, and getting all the connections to work reliably and consistently would be a bit of a pain and possibly a game of luck. Having everything in one consolidated and effective device made it so easy.
If they didn't wish to be the steward of this platform, for whatever reason, we wish Amazon would allow another private firm buy the technology and keep it going. We miss you Glow!

I snagged this device when it was offered on discount to Prime members. It was easy to set up the device and get connected to family members, and thus far it seems that all participants are having a good time. It meets the goal I had to get more interaction with long distance folks and the kids *will* sit for FAR LONGER than they will for any FaceTime or video chat application. More important, they will start to engage in conversation that organically arises versus forcing say, a 5 year old to have a conversation with a 70 year old. This happens because they are both participating in an engaging activity!
The device has been set up for two days now and here's what I noticed:
THE GOOD - The kids can operate the device and call out on their own - I can trust they're in a safe online environment with kids+ - They are far more excited to interact with family and I can hear laughter coming from both the kids and the family member on the other side! - The projection area is pretty large so it's a "screen" bigger than any device they've ever played with
THE BAD - it is glitchy, like other reviewers have noted. So far, we have experienced glitches like getting stuck on the home screen or in a Loading...state for some activities. We have tried soft and hard resets to fix the issue but it keeps happening. - Had some issues with connectivity. We have an Echo Dot and Firestick on the same room that we don't have issues with... so it's just the Glow - The device is LARGE. I saw other reviews that mentioned this. Grab a ruler to spec out the area you plan on putting this device. It's a fairly large footprint between the base, itself, and the mat. - Some content is locked until you have connected with someone to play - kids were disappointed that the books didn't have a voice track - You can't see what you look like in the video chat. There were times when the adult was not in view of the camera, or maybe it was a giant forehead or something. Similarly, kids who can't sit still will also find themselves off camera but not realize it. I guess this is slightly less important while both parties are playing.
I'm going to give it some time to burn in and will revisit later. Thus far, I'm going to stick with my impression that this is more of a proof of concept than production-level item.

At first, my five year-old granddaughter wasn't so sure about this new Amazon device. As the reviews note, it can be a little glitchy. Kids need to be warned to keep that extra hand off the white mat so as not to confused the laser. This is amazing technology. The 3-D scanning of you kids' items and the ability to add it to several activities really personalizes the experience. The old days of using FaceTime on a phone that gets waved around and never points the right way is over. The glow requires sitting in front of it and our granddaughter is in perfect position. It's very easy to set up. Parental controls are extensive and the Glow can communicate ONLY with those approved by the parents. It cannot make phone calls, can't browse the web, can't stream YouTube or other content and has a large (and expanding, they say) library of content. The monthly fee is $4.99, but the first year is included. If it wasn't, I'd still pay the subscription price. We can read books together while turning pages, play board games, do jigsaw puzzles, draw and much more. I purchased mine during Amazon Prime Days and got it at 60% off, so that made me very happy. Consider getting one. Amazon has the return windows open for 60 days on this device.
Amazon putting profits over people, one disappointed six-year-old here

So disappointing this product is going away. Amazon is impatient for profits. This isn't a quickly adopted device because parents aren't looking for another electronic device for their kids. But this is the anti-electronic electronic device. There is nothing else like it out there. My daughter will turn off favorite videos to jump on the Glow and play with her aunts, brother, cousin, and uncle. I raised one child during the XBOX/PS2 period. He would be on a game with his friends, wearing his headset. Me and the rest of the world shut out. But this device brings family right into the room! I can interact with my family while they are playing. This device brings families together, brings aunts, uncles, brothers, and grandparents right into the room to read and play. Bu there is no way to market it quickly because there is nothing else like it. Word of mouth is too slow for Amazon, though once the word gets out look out. And the possibilities are endless. I spoke with my daughter’s therapist about this device. If there was a way she could use it to provide telehealth therapy she would go for it, but it would need her cell number at this point. If they figured out how to do glow to glow connections, they would sell twice as many. They could make homeschooling content available on it and families from a distance could participate. I understand Amazon needs to put profits over people, but there is one very sad and disappointed six year old here at my house, not to mention her aunts, uncles, and her brother. I hope somebody from the development team starts their own business and markets it.

So much fun! I live in New England and my grandchildren live in Virginia so it can be hard to stay connected. My 4 year old grandson and I love playing on the Glow together. We have for many years used FaceTime to spend time together but the Glow has really given us something to do together. He is able, after several coaching sessions with his mom and dad by his side, to operate the Glow almost completely independently. There are a few games that are still above his level but we find plenty to do together now and knowing that there will be activities for him to grow into is exciting. His 2 year old brother can join in from time to time but two years old is young to use it alone without getting frustrated. I have really been surprised by how well the Glow responds and how many activities there are already that we really enjoy. It is a great way to spend one on one time with him and even when I visit him we play together with the Glow. The most frustrating feature is reading a book together, they really need to improve on page turning ability. If we use the feature that allows us to turn the page with arrows it removes the picture from the book when the bubble pops up with the words or if we try to turn the page with the finger method, that is suppose to give the feeling of turning a real page, it just doesn’t work and gets very frustrating. It would also be nice if they put in some more features that would give the adult on the tablet side the ability to override what the child has to do, while younger children are learning the Glow.
