I came across this book on a whim, being lured in by both the very promising description as well as the cover art. It became almost immediately clear that I had picked up a book of genuine quality. Obviously, as the title of this novel-in-stories suggests, there is a dream-like quality at play here. That isn’t to say the author utilizes any stereotypical “dream-like” ploys. Instead, Smith employs his masterful grasp of the English language in order to craft sentences which hurl the reader through varying and esoteric states of consciousness, and he makes it seem as effortless as simply closing one’s eyes. One can’t help but fall into J.D.’s dream world—a world replete with mad-cap plots to make a quick buck, sort his life out, and live right, plots which inevitably, farcically, tend to crumble—and once you are engulfed, the only real choice of any substance is to let go of any and all expectation and allow yourself to be whisked away. Rest assured that, no matter where these stories take you—whether it be one of Philadelphia’s slummiest apartments, or possibly an eerily (un)recognizable trip to a museum, or possibly into a land of antiquity never before imagined—the attention to detail will have you experiencing it all as if you were there, regardless of whether you would like to be. This book is very, very good. Although the style could be considered by some as antiquated, at times asking much from the modern reader, I believe this to be a major strength, and a delightful, erudite nod to the works which so clearly comprise Smith’s influences: Wodehouse, Dickens, Twain. And that brings me to my favorite element of Smith’s work: it is riotously funny. These days, the terms “hilarious,” and “laughed out loud,” get tossed around far too gratuitously for my taste, but terms like these, heck, any synonym for such, are only too appropriate. I laughed wildly with manic delectation, notably at the observations of the narrator, but also at the scenarios which Smith has concocted for his narrator, as well as for the rest of the wily, eclectic cast. All in all, this book is funny, wise, sardonic and acutely critical, at times sensitive and unexpectedly thoughtful, and, most importantly, crafted with the care and ability of a real artist. This is a novel to be not only read but experienced. I can’t imagine a world in which one might regret such an undertaking. If you are a fan of good literature and short stories, check this book out. For those all-too-familiar with the form, you just may find yourself refreshed taking in this wholly original work. Even if you are like me and might not put yourself in the category of literati, I’d wager that this novel, the way that Smith tells stories, could turn even the most stone-hearted literary apathetic into an avid reader—notably of the ornate antiquarian— and have them hungering for the great English works of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as well as for more of Smith’s own work. Long story short, read this book. It’s worth it, and Mr. Smith is a fellow to follow.
