If stories like Christy are your cup of tea, and if you enjoy a good When Calls the Heart every now and then, you may want to pick up The Heart of the Mountains as your next read.Cora and Jeb are the kind of characters that you root for from the moment they walk on the page. It may be more appropriate to say, "dash out on the page," in this case. I appreciated the hard topics Basham addressed gently through the relationship that Sam and Caroline held. Granny was a character that you just love to have to add a bit of saltiness to the story. I feel like every time I think about something I enjoyed about the book, another thought comes into my head and my fingers just can't type fast enough. Some stories have one incident after another and you think, "is this maybe too much in such a story?" because it doesn't seem realistic. However, in the Heart of the Mountain, we have more of a growth of characters and seeing that growth through certain bits and pieces that show forth in different circumstances. For example, when braced with flying over the edge of a cliff and hanging on for dear life until rescued, one would think Cora would be the weak heroine. But as the story progresses you see the human side of her that pulls up the bootstraps and gets down to what is needed. Jeb seems like the kind of guy that is working through a lot and will be the hero that needs to mentally recover from a war, but as the story goes along, you see his faith being a huge process of that healing.There were a few times I expected the story to get all cliche on me, and while there is some instances that are easy to guess, it was not as predictable a story as I expected, and that is to the author's credit! One reason I quit reading Christian fiction for a time was the fact the plots were all the same and followed a script it seemed, with different names and geographic locations. Not necessarily so with this work. While our main character is escaping a poor marriage in England and has no idea what she is getting into when she comes to the Appalachia mountains, the things that enter her life bring value to the story.Ok, I think I have gushed enough--- although this is very tamed compared to Basham's kissing scenes. Wow. That was a little blush worthy to mention. (I may have also skimmed. Not really into the sentimental lovey-dovey mush, as Life with Father described well.)Somethings to note that may be triggers, abuse, substance abuse, depression, slander.
