VINDICTA takes place in the immediate aftermath of OMEGA (Book 5), pitting General Sanderson's surviving Black Flag operatives and allies, against a monstrous, time-driven plot to reshape the United States in the warped image of TRUE AMERICA—a widespread domestic terrorist organization masquerading as a third-party political movement.
With only one shot at stopping key conspirators within the recently elected TRUE AMERICA administration from permanently and disastrously altering the future trajectory of the United States, the Black Flag crew triggers VINDICTA, a daring, multi-pronged operation to put an end to the madness and rot inside TRUE AMERICA—before it both figuratively and literally "infects" the entire country.
VINDICTA brings the core Black Flagged series to a satisfying, long-awaited end, opening new doors to bring many of the Black Flagged characters to life in new adventures—some already written.

THE ZULU VIRUS CHRONICLES:
This series is named after the virus introduced (created by rogue scientist Dr. Anatoly Reznikov) in REDUX (Book 2). “ZVC” takes place roughly a decade and a half after the core series ends. I originally designed this series as an alternate universe, where the virus that turned a Russian city inside-out, was finally launched in the United States by the domestic terrorists that commissioned its creation (See APEX, Book 3). The Zulu Virus Chronicles features a mass-scale bioweapons attack against America, perpetrated by domestic terrorists. Several Black Flag operatives show up to try and “save the day” in the series (2nd and 3rd book), including Richard Farrington and the Petroviches.
THE DEVIN GRAY BOOKS:
DEEP SLEEP, the first book in my latest series, centers around a Russian sleeper conspiracy, on a magnitude never previously explored in the espionage genre. I don’t say that lightly. It truly takes the sleeper concept to the next level—and who better to help Devin Gray take down this network than Karl Berg, who is drawn into the plot early and plays a key role throughout. Of course, he recommends the latest iteration of the Black Flag crew to help with the “unsavory” aspects of unraveling a nationwide conspiracy. Black Flagged fans will absolutely love the crossover in this series. Richard Farrington. Scott Daly. Melendez. Miralles. So many more. It’s a must read for Black Flagged readers. This series takes place before ZVC.
THE RYAN DECKER BOOKS:
I seem to have a penchant for “hard luck” protagonists who need help, and the Ryan Decker series is no exception—though Decker manages to get through the third book without needing the Black Flag crew. That said, the conspiracy he unravels in the third book leads to a “reckoning” of sorts in the final book of the series, and there’s no way to take down APEX Industries without some serious outside help. Enter…a small crew of trusted (well known to Black Flagged fans) mercenaries.
Disclaimer: The Black Flag crew does not arrive until SKYSTORM, Book 4.

About the author

Steven Konkoly is the Wall Street Journal and repeated #1 Amazon bestseller of over twenty thrillers.
Steven graduated from the United States Naval Academy, receiving a bachelor of science in English literature. He served the next eight years on active duty, traveling the world as a naval officer assigned to various Navy and Marine Corps units. His extensive journey spanned the globe, including a two-year tour of duty in Japan—and travel to more than twenty countries throughout Asia and the Middle East.
From enforcing United Nations sanctions against Iraq, as a maritime boarding officer in the Arabian Gulf, to directing aircraft bombing runs and naval gunfire strikes as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) assigned to a specialized Marine Corps unit, Steven's "in-house" experience with a wide range of regular and elite military units brings a unique authenticity to his thrillers.
He still wakes up at "zero dark thirty" to write for most of the day. When "off duty," he spends as much time as possible outdoors or travelling with his family--and dog.
Steven is an active member of the International Thriller Writers (ITW) and Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) organizations.

Also, the subplots and threads of evil that he proposes are actually a deep connection to what is very likely really going on out there in the dangerous world of spy craft and deceit, intrigue and sheer suspense ( lots of crimson mists from headshots to get through). I have a few other favorite writers of this genre that I love and follow but Steven holds a special place my Kindle. I am constantly wondering how he can keep up the pace! Go get ‘‘em tiger, and now, on to the new Bobby Akart novel to clear my palate.
Oh yes - along the way, those operatives sometimes also became killers. And then Sanderson's Black Flag program was defunded. But he didn't quit. Alpha, the first book, was tightly written, fast-paced, and populated with fascinating characters and circumstances. To say nothing of lots of violence. All of it written by someone who was far more familiar with that world than an author who produced a work based solely on research. Since I found Alpha a few years after it was first published, I got hungry for the followup novels. The series kept developing, with new threats to us emerging, mad scientists, the involvement of almost every agency with 3 letter acronyms, the Russian Mafia, and then the emergence of a right wing paramilitary political party.
The previous book ended in a shootout and a cliff hanger. I read Konkoly's other work, wondering when he'd conclude the Black Flag series. When he announced that upcoming publication of Vindicta as a conclusion to the series, I took advantage of being retired (and having an extensive Kindle library) and reread all the books in the series in preparation. Besides being entertained, I was glad I was once again familiar with that world.
Around the novel itself, for those who haven't read the entire series, Konkoly had done something I hadn't seen before: he provided summaries of the various books before and after the story. In one sense, then, it isn't necessary to be a follower - you'll get filled in so the threads that are finally dealt with are going to make sense. I would argue that you'd be missing some fun reading, but this can be read as a stand alone.
One of the biggest surprises in Vindicta is that Sanderson - the former "stop and nothing and who cares" general actually mellows and gains some humanity. The Petrovitches finally get to sail off into the sunset. The mad scientist is finished. Jokes are made at the expense of team mates - and that's worth a comment in and of itself. It's clear that Konkoly served (not just because his bio says so) but because a lot of his dialogue captures the spirit of teams - men and women who have each other's backs, who live on the edge and have a fierce love of life.
My TBR pile is large. I've read another series of his (The Jakarta Pandemic) and there are others to get to. This one ensured I will read more of his works.
It was all a big enjoyable mess to read, but this finale succeeds in pulling it together. You still have to make your way early on through multiple conspiracies, without knowing who’s who and on which side, but Konkoly sorts it out to my satisfaction.
The Soviet scientist Reznikov, who developed the virus and went rogue to engineer an outbreak in Russia, has now been held captive twice by shadowy forces to do more work on it. He is busted out of captivity at a secret lab in India only to be held elsewhere. He’s smuggled through Mexico into the United States to put the finishing touches on the virus at another secret lab.
But who’s behind this? A Mexican drug cartel and Russian thugs are in on it, but is there anyone else?
Meanwhile Sanderson and the Black Flag crowd fight the rebirth of a conspiracy, True America, they thought they’d killed off before. But while they’d eliminated the firebrands who were the public face of the ultra-patriotic group, now they learn the conspiracy goes higher, to the top of the government. They must root it out, but who can they trust? They’ve only just now returned into the government’s good-enough graces that they can return stateside without being arrested.
With much of Black Flag just wiped out, a new group forms, a crew of remaining operatives plus a few FBI and CIA types willing to risk their careers to save their country.
Zulu Virus is a lot like the zombie-causing disease featured on shows like “The Walking Dead” - an incurable disease that makes the infected irrationally violent. What’s even scarier about it, Konkoly notes earlier in the series, is that it’s based on lethal forms of equine encephalitis which can be, and has been, weaponized. Meaning in principle this kind of outbreak could happen.
