About the author

YOL SWAN is a spiritual teacher, author, and coach with more than thirty years of experience exploring the mind through psychology, spirituality, yoga philosophy, and Advaita Vedanta (nonduality). She helps people around the world gain emotional and spiritual freedom by comprehending the true nature of reality and implementing the Swan Method to reclaim the power to transform it from within.
Growing up in an intellectual family, she intuitively rejected religion from a very young age but perceived life as energy and always felt guided from within. After years of psychoanalysis in her twenties, she awakened to the Divine while spending a few years in almost complete isolation to better understand herself. Then she built a solid spiritual foundation with the personal guidance of enlightened masters from both Buddhist and Hindu traditions, which eventually led her to taste a nondual state. Now she follows and teaches nondualism or Self-knowledge while guiding others toward inner freedom.
Yol has studies in English literature, music, and clinical homeopathy and currently lives in Western North Carolina, surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains.

After being in therapy, trying many self-help methods, reading many books, talking with so many different people about life, psychology, spirituality, today's world… I finally found something that gives the full picture. Because it talks clearly and honestly to what is already within me, waiting to be brought to the light.
Now I understand it's not solely about being brave, feeling all there is, or eating healthy, or removing the ego, or healing the wounds… It can be all that and nothing about that. With the Swan Method, we can learn about the path the leads us to living life fully, a path that is not always easy but really worth walking.
I am grateful to Yol Swan for sharing her incredible knowledge and wisdom with such clarity. I’ve read her book The Indigo Journals (great book by the way), but that one is not for everybody. You are your Healer is.
Maybe you will read the book and think, as I did a couple of times, that it takes too much work, too much engagement. However, if you think about it honestly, what doesn't? Anything worthy in life requires effort. Ironically, none of that will last. As you will learn in this book, you can be involved with life and not get swallowed by it, experiencing it as an observer, detached from both pleasure and pain, which leads to lasting joy and peace.
We all have this deep yearning for peace and freedom, but it’s easy to get caught in the struggle for survival—in the play of ego. However, some of us are on this planet to search for a deeper truth, the real meaning of life, and to bring out the light for everyone. This book shows you how!
The author presents an incredibly impressive history of Vedic spiritual study. In fact, that’s one of the things that I liked most about this book - the focus on Eastern spirituality. I’ve studied (i.e., read about) Buddhism, but it never stuck. While this isn’t a lecture on any specific Eastern philosophy, there is definitely a leaning in that direction.
A lot of the book focuses on disconnecting from the ego mind and letting go of your perceptions of being separate from, well, everything. Some of it sounded a lot like shadow work, some of it honestly went a little over my head. I’m a concrete thinker and there aren’t a lot of practical examples in the book. When the author provided them, I found myself relating to her lessons much more strongly. However, the “how-to” part of the book is quite detailed and seems fairly easy to follow/implement. (I can’t say how well this method did nor did not work for me since, time being an issue, I’ve only had a chance to read the book, not put anything into practice. I do intend to come back to it, though.)
The author provides some information that I haven’t seen before (or not nearly often enough) - for example, the pyramid of love that sets out where individuals might be on their spiritual quest, and she emphasizes we don’t always progress in a straight line. Sometimes it’s one step forward, three steps back. Which is nice to hear since I don’t know about anyone else, but I rarely cut myself any slack when I seem to backslide or get lazy about my spiritual practice (it happens to us all.)
I will say that I’m not sure if this is a good book for beginners just starting out on their spiritual journey. I felt like it’s fairly high-concept and I don’t think I would have been ready for this book when I was just getting interested in connecting with my highest potential. Some parts felt a bit repetitious and I really don’t think I can quietly meditate for twenty to thirty minutes a day but you never know, it’s a goal to strive for. Once I can quiet the hamster in my mind - kriyas are more my style since they give me something to focus on.
If you’re drawn to Eastern spiritual philosophy or even if you’ve never given it much thought but are ready to step up your practice, I recommend this book. There’s a lot of wonderful, practical guidance within its pages.
Thank you to BookSirens for providing the ARC ebook. I’ve left my review honestly and voluntarily.
I recognize that this book is good and has been helpful to a lot of people, but for me, it felt tedious and preachy. It didn't feel accessible to me. I want more human messiness in my self-help books. This book was without a revolutionary epiphany and didn't particularly stand apart from most other self-help books on the shelves today. It felt akin to "Eat, Pray, Love", which is not to put it down--but to describe its basic nature.
This book is certainly worth a try for people who are looking to expand their minds and ground themselves in their own inner knowing and sense of self.
