The public knows me as Damon ‘the Speed Demon’ Davidoff, eligible bachelor and winner of FQ titles around the world. Fans adore me and my team supports me. They don’t need to know I’m so deep in the closet I intend to bury myself there.
Then my poor health catches up to me and my world comes crashing down. I could bounce back easily if it weren’t for one little complication: my male nurse is attractive as hell.
I can suppress these feelings during the season break—I have to. I’m not going to expose my secret just because I feel a fire coursing through my veins when Rocky puts his hands on me.
As the weeks go by, I somehow let Rocky under my skin and into my heart. He’s smart, sweet, and everything I never knew I needed.
I thought I wanted a clean bill of health and to keep winning my races. Now, for the first time in my life, I want so much more. I want him, and damn if that isn’t the scariest thing I’ve ever felt.
(“Drive to Thrive” is a male/male motorsports romance novel. It involves Christmas karaoke, New Year’s Eve parties, Las Vegas swimming pool dates, and yes, lots of racing action worldwide. It is book one of a series, has a HEA, and can be read as a standalone)

About the author

CD Rachels has been coming up with stories since he was little.
First it was fanfiction, then YA queer novels, and now he's moved up to the big leagues of adult MM romance. In 2020 during quarantine, he burned through more male/male romance books than he ever had in the previous 29 years combined.
He believes there aren't enough BIPOC MC's in MM romance, and he's on a mission to change that.
He lives in New York City with the love of his life and works in health insurance. If you're reading this, he's honored that you took the time to help support him as a self-published author.

That being said, because I feel like a total jerk and I had so much excitement and hope for this new series, I have to point out that it was really good for what it was.
If you look at it like a cute little love story based on typical sports m/m tropes, it holds up. There’s angst, but it’s pretty predictable and minimal, so it’s not like.. driving the entire book.. kind of. I mean, it does center on the whole “closet-dwelling sports guy” trope, but it lets you know that you won’t be seeing anyone hurting too badly for too long. It gives good vibes and a mostly easy road to a HEA. Though, honestly, I’m not into the need to perpetuate feeling like coming out is going to ruin your entire life, especially in my pretend romance worlds. I’d like to read a book where someone just.. gets to be happy, and it doesn’t matter who with. I get that that’s not realistic, but let’s be real with ourselves and remember that it’s not REALLY realistic to begin with, so 🫠
The thing that gets me the most, though, is that I’ve seen this done so many times. And while it’s about a new sport, it feels like all the other books I’ve already read. Like, pick an outline, paste in your details, and BAM! A book like the others. Yay. The character’s originality and depth from the first series is missing here. I get it, I sound hateful and harsh, but I can’t pretend I’m living and dying for this when I’m not. I have seen what this author can do, and I want so badly for him to KEEP doing it. I want the same energy, especially since it’s technically the same world, and I don’t want to feel these feelings. I WANT to love it as much as the other books he’s written, but I can’t. And I hate it so much and feel so evil. I don’t like me right now…
In any case, I give it a hearty 3.5/5, with an added dash of personal hope that the same passion from his previous series makes a return. My rating, as always, is based on the book and not my opinion of the story/plot/characters. I’m rating it this way based on the fact that the editing was not it at all and no one caught how choppy and odd some of the scenes came out. It could’ve all been fixed with a more careful, attentive editing session.
Damon was a tad more sedated than Rocky and I think it was due to the fact that he had to hide such an important part of himself. He doesn't have many friends, though by the end of the book it turns out that may not be as true as he thinks. Rocky was the first person he ever felt comfortable being himself around and it made me sad that it took him until his late twenties to feel that way. Damon had a lot of self reflection to go through before him and Rocky could get the HEA they deserved. Thankfully he smartens up after he gets some pretty important advice I think we could all do with and is a perfect ending to my review.
"Don't wait too long to prioritize the ones who make you happy. We only get one shot at life. Find out who really makes it work it and hold onto them."
Damon "the speed demon" Davidoff is a Formula Q driver who is so deep in the closet he's afraid he'll never find a way out. He doesn't allow anyone in his life to get close to him. When he gets sick and needs a nurse to give him his meds at home three days a week, things get a little tricky. Especially when that nurse is the most gorgeous man Damon has ever seen.
Rocky is the nurse tasked with giving Damon treatment for a digestion condition. He doesn't follow sports at all but knows Damon is a big deal in his world. He also might be as into Rocky as Rocky is into him. This could get really tricky.
These guys had great chemistry as friends and as lovers. I loved their banter and the way their relationship blossomed. I also loved the way Damon fit into Rocky's family. It was really cute.
There are quite a few obstacles these men have to face in this book but none are insurmountable. I'd say this is a low-medium angst book. My heart broke for them several times. It's emotional and raw, very relatable in many ways.
The book is well written and well researched. I was a big fan of the side characters and look forward to seeing them in future books. This was a good start to a new series.

As a non sporty person it was reallly easy to follow the sport part of the book and it was really exciting to learn a little bit about racing.
Damon and Rocky have amazing chemistry, but the real MVPs are Rocky’s family. Can’t wait for the rest of the series ❤️❤️
