Flavor is weak
Aroma and taste are lacking. It’s too grassy for lack of a better term. Color is also very pale. The trans world matcha organic hojicha is roasted better and tastes better. Might be better baked instead of in drinks

Update: bumping up to 4 stars. I don’t drink it, but it’s really good on sweets. I like to make myself cottage cheese with honey crisp apples diced on top, usually topped with maple syrup and cinnamon. I added a pinch of houjicha and just a small amount added so much depth to the flavor of this treat! Please try it. I’m going to experiment more on various snacks and try adding it to certain drinks. So, still a no for me on being a latte on its own, but so great to add to other things!

Original review: I love matcha and import a variety straight from Japan. I have to wait for my next order to come in, so I thought I’d try something new in the meantime. I didn’t end up liking this houjicha that much. I think it’s ok for baking, but it’s not good enough to drink. I can’t say this with full confidence like I could for matcha since I have tried many matcha brands and types and only this one houjicha. I would need to try many more to create a better frame of reference. It doesn’t taste or feel high grade though. I am interested in trying more since it was pretty good, just not great. I had it plain, with maple syrup, and with milk and honey. I’ll experiment more. If you’re not a snob and just want to try something fun, get it I’m sure you’ll like it. Seems very versatile

I bought this because it was recommended to me and this brand says it's organic.
When I opened up the bag it had this really pungent odor (the color wasn't too appealing either) but it didn't smell rancid. I mixed it according to the package directions. The taste was awful. I mixed it again with a little less powder as I've seen some reviews say and again, it was awful. I tried oat milk, almond milk, whole milk & 2%...you name it and each time it was just as bad. I thought it's either really this disgusting or I received a bad batch. Well later that night confirmed it. Gut wrenching pain and non stop vomiting...Hello Food poisoning, table for 1. So glad I didn't let anyone else in my family try it out of curiosity. In the trash it went.

This powder has a muddy, dull taste in contrast to the more cocoa-like HojiCha powders I've had before. The packaging is also terrible--the first time I opened it, powder had gone beyond the zip part of the bag so that it scattered everywhere with the first opening of the seal. The color of the Hoji Cha is also lighter and duller than Japanese varieties I've had before. I would not recommend this purchase if you can afford the slightly more expensive powders, or maybe if you plan to use it for baking or cooking.

It can be hard to find hojicha specifically - it isn't as ubiquitous as Matcha is becoming to be. I love baking with ingredients like Hojicha, Matcha, and Black Sesame, and this is my go-to for hojicha powder specifically. It's done the job well for lattes, cookies, Hojicha Tiramisu, and other desserts and drinks.

I like this hojicha powder because it makes excellent lattes. I was trying to cut back on the coffee and was looking for something with a more earthy taste as opposed to matcha. This is it! I’m in love! I mix a little honey in with the latte and it’s gone in 2 minutes flat.

Ever since visiting Japan I've been searching *for months* for a good quality, affordable hojicha. I made an iced latte with this right away and it did not disappoint! I think a lot of the negative reviews are from people who have never tried hojicha before this; it has a more earthy, toasted flavor than matcha that's not for everyone, but if you're a fan of it then this hits the spot. If you buy this and regret it, there's a lot of fun hojicha desserts you could make with this powder.
