Shasta, where she finally (sort of?) gets to speak to God. And through it all, there’s the nasty little voice in her head reminding her what a narcissistic loser she is.

Populated with a colorful cast of healers, heretics, hipster witches, and coked-up S.N.A.G.s (Spiritual New Age Guys), Messy Bitch Magic speaks to a generation of seekers for whom modern spirituality is often more self-pleasure rituals and online personality tests. Messy Bitch Magic has blown me away. It is the only book my ADHD hasn't had me going back to re read paragraphs because I spaced out. My emotions were plastered on my face the entire time, I could not put it down. It is BRUTALLY VULNERABLE. I laughed out loud, I cried, I cringed so hard I got goosebumps. You either need to read this because you are a messy bitch or you have messy bitches in your life that need better understanding. Ani holds back absolutely nothing- this is so much more than an entertaining autobiography, the complexities of this book are so desperately needing to be seen/heard/discussed in today’s society. I simply couldn’t put it down. I have 2 book clubs approaching swiftly and still I couldn’t stop reading this book. Work, vet visits, the need to sleep: couldn’t put it down.
Ani tells a story that is specific to only herself and doesn’t try to or claim to relate to anyone else. And yet every page I turned I saw myself or someone I love mirrored. We all have doubt and darkness.
I feel for this girl who has gone through too much but finally realizes that the whole time she was still someone she likes being. I’m so happy she realized that. Through all these stories you can’t help but love her. She’s a mess!! But she tries so earnestly and is constantly trying to learn and be better.

Some of the things in this book are like so OBVIOUS that I gasped when I realized I never thought of it like that.

Read this book if you’ve ever been sad or if a man has ever wronged you or if you’re a Dunkies girl.

This was an absolutely intoxicating read. I read the whole thing in two sittings because I just couldn’t stop. I became so wildly invested in this woman’s life within the first pages. I felt like I knew her intimately. The author creates a world where darkness, intimacy, vulnerability, magic and hilarity coexist and are digested in a way I’ve never experienced. Her story is important. Her story made me feel more human. The way it’s written is beautiful, lyrical, blunt and bold. I cried at times, then my tears were quickly replaced by laughter. She has a humor that totally resonates with me - I have never really laughed out loud while reading before until this read. This is a story that you know would make an epic and raw film, that plays itself in your minds eye even after you have finished reading. Read it. Tell your friends to read it. HIGHLY recommend!!
