This is the second book in the Ashley Crime Family series. It's a fast-paced and standalone book that will keep you engaged from start to finish. There's action, adventure, drama, danger, suspense, twist/turns, enemies, survival, intrigue, humor, mystery/secrets, surprises, family, anger, fear, pain, friends/friendships, conflict, resolution, confusion, confidence, strength, courage, trust, truths, stubbornness, struggles, protection, kidnapping, tension, arrogance, doubts, turmoil (emotional), annoyance, complications, mistakes, hope/hopelessness, violence, rivalry/rivals, frustration, determination, patience, abuse (emotionally, mentally, physically, verbally), lies, deception, rejection, confrontations, happiness, romance, passion/lust and love.
This is a story about the youngest son (H) of the Ashley family and is a computer nerd, and the h gets hooked on pain meds that she was taking after being attacked.

I was a little hesitant to read this book since it was kind of a remake, namely Stone cold. But the introduction of Bonnie to the storyline was just something great. I've loved the Ashby's for awhile now. Thanks for another great read!

The Second Book in the Ashby Crime Family

I did not "catch" that this is the second book in a series but I wish I had paid more attention because I think I would have been more invested in this story if I had already read the "background" of some of the characters. That being said, I still enjoyed this story but it took me longer to become comfortable and involved in the main characters and the secondary characters that had already been introduced in Book 1. This story is above Calvin who is the youngest Ashby sibling and the one that doesn't always feel that he is appreciated. The female he is involved with is Bonnie who had really had a rough time after being accused of murder and then being disowned by her family. She becomes involved in drugs to help numb her disappointing life. Luckily, she has Maisie, her best friend and Calvin who help her navigate out of the drug induced hell her life becomes adsorbed in. As I said, you can read these stories out of order but something I wish was made clearer was that the stories will make more sense if you read them in order.

This is a re-release of Stone Cold, book 2 of the Ashby family, a story in this series I read in 2020.
This family is ruled by Sadie, a ruthless mafia mother, and there are so many lies running through this family! The introduction of Bonnie into the mix just makes it messier.

Bonnie’s realized that being a good little catholic girl isn't what it's cracked up to be, when her parents disown her. She has some hard times coming to terms with her situation [substance triggers here].
I would have liked Cal to be a bit more understanding of her, as he's struggled through his own addictions, but compassion is not in the Ashby family's blood.

This is a dark, twisted read - full of difficult themes, and enough betrayals, violence, lies and dysfunction to sink an ocean liner. I did enjoy the re-read. It wasn't a heartwarming HEA, but these two did get something that worked for them.

Addiction is a topic that is certainly a hard topic to write about. It is hard to find the balance of depicting addiction with its struggles but also having the character grow in enough increments that the reader wants to cheer them on. I would have preferred that the growth be depicted sooner, I was getting really frustrated with the character's continued spiral but then it is never easy to read about it. Still a good book to read.

A dark intense story with very difficult topics. Plot filled with addiction, suspense, despair, violence, rejection, desire, doubts, challenges, fear and love. Ending leaves waiting for the next story in the family saga.

WICKED EMBRACE is intense with difficult topics that may be emotionally hard to read. Calvin and Bonnie’s relationship is complex and challenging. Bonnie’s travails seem to certainly be more than any one person should face, and Calvin’s seeming reluctance to step up when she needs him most, although brief, is the catalyst that could push her over the edge, adding a degree of darkness that may be too much for some readers. But just when things are at their most dark, a surprising spark ignites that could change everything in this darkly intriguing and engaging tale. And although there continue to be unanswered questions about the Ashby family’s future, the surprising ending is sure to leave you more anxious to know what’s next for this deeply compelling family dynasty.
