I use this for cleaning extremely greasy things like hood filters, and greasy surfaces in the kitchen. It's extremely effective for cutting through the the goop that accumulates on the mesh in the filter. I just pre rinse the filter (with cold water to keep the grease from clogging the pipes), then I partly fill the sink, and finally I pour in a teaspoon of this stuff (pretty strong). After a bit of mixing, I start scrubbing, and I'm usually done in less than a minute!
For surface cleaning, I mix up a bit of this stuff in a sprayer bottle and spray the surface I want to clean. Then I scrub/wipe it off with a paper towel (so I can dispose of it and keep it out of the sewer).
NOTE THAT THIS IS A PHOSPHATE DETERGENT! You probably shouldn't use it for daily dishwashing, since phosphates are really bad for the environment - they cause nasty algae blooms and other eutrophication problems! If you don't want this stuff banned for home use, don't use tons of it. Also: if you live in areas where water treatment is marginal or with high levels of phosphates in groundwater probably think about using this stuff carefully!
Update, a few years later: it turns out there are a few other specific uses that Alconox is excellent for. Cleaning chemical labware (which I need occasionally, testing my garden soils), and cleaning my CPAP/APAP machine. It turns out I have sleep apnea, which is quite a surprise for someone my age, but I'm benefitting quite a bit from CPAP therapy. These machines need to be cleaned frequently, and I can't afford leftover dirt, suds, or any kind of residue. I also can't use anything harsh, like bleach, and don't want to use any solvents like ammonia. Alconox was made for this. And it's perfect. I need very little of it - I'm still using the same bottle that I bought like 5 years ago now - and it means way less scrubbing and rinsing.
I was first introduced to this product while doing MIS (Multi Increment Sampling) on soils. This basically involves making a bunch of holes with an augur to a particular depth, then collecting samples from the bottom of each hole. This in and of itself isn't anything too weird, but the kicker is that you've got to VERY thoroughly clean your equipment between groups to prevent cross contamination. Now, many of the things you might use to clean the tools could actually influence the lab results. So somebody broke out this stuff.
It's pretty amazing to watch. Even at a very low dilution level, it cuts through soil with little effort. We're talking pretty much mud. Some of it was really thick and caked on there. After you scraped off or brushed off the large chunks, you could spray this on and most of the rest of the dirt would literally slide off the metal tools. Even after it looked clean to the eye, you could spray more and watch as the tendrils of filth snaked their way down into the catchment below. Afterward, the tools shined in a way that you often attribute to brand new tools.
I purchased this to use for cleaning other things, but it's worked fantastic so far. Leaves no residue when rinsed with water, safe for metals.
Still the same great product that doesnt slowly damage my sleep mask which has non latex cushion inserts. Regular dish soap has fragances and other chemicals that will most likely have deleterious effects on my sleep cushion.
The picture of this product shows it in a paper carton. NOTHING could be farther from the truth. It arrived in a plastic container. This pleases me in 3 ways. 1) As the Chemist of DOOM, I like environmentally damaging things like plastic- I prefer plastic over paper, because paper is very ecologically friendly- it involves trees and sulfuric acid and stuff, all naturally occurring. Plus, paper manufacturing is easily powered by unicorn farts. Plastic is made with all artificial stuff like hydrocarbons. 2) A picture of a paper carton, actual product in plastic? False deceptive advertising. I like this too. 3) I haven't actually used any yet. True to form, when my experiments fail, I throw the glassware on the floor and break it. Not only does this look dramatic as heck, but it saves me from having to use my precious plasticized Alconox Detergent. Plus, I'm far too important to clean glassware.
But I know this stuff works great- I used it last century when I was working on my B.S. Evil World Conquering Chemistry at the Royal University of Latveria. They made you pay for any glassware you broke there, so I couldn't just go around smashing stuff theatrically.
This is one of the best cleaning products you can buy. I used this at my past job to steam clean our equipment, but I also took some home for laundry to get out grease and oil stains from my clothes as well. It is super concentrated so don't use a lot - as it's not good for your skin, but this stuff works great!
I only gave 4 stars because I was very disappointed in the shipping. It came earlier than expected which was nice, but with zero packing so container bounced around box and opened up dumping around a cup of powder in the box. Even so, I'd still buy again.
I wrote this review a while back, people have found it helpful, but it didn't show up at this particular Alconox listing, so I repeat myself: I worked in biomedical labs for over 40 years, and this stuff is fantastic. I use it around the house for all kinds of things, but especially for glassware. Even stubbornly stained glass gleams after a soaking. Very sudsy, so NO DISHWASHER USE, although the same company makes excellent washer detergents. Jewelers use this stuff in ultrasonic cleaners to restore pieces to brilliance. Wash your car with it, if you do that at home, and it will come out great. It rinses off and drains completely if you use enough water. Biodegradable, too! I just soaked my dirty enameled Dutch oven in it overnight and it came out clean as a whistle, as always. Careful, it makes dishes slippery when handling wet!
